How he "wins" over the chess computer mirrors the end as he just decided to burn the place down, not being able to outsmart it by playing by its rules. The computer opponent also mimicks human behavior like the Thing which I just realized.

Also, MacReady did the same thing to Childs as he did with the chess computer. The theory here is that Childs is the Thing. MacReady wasn't drinking his whiskey, but holding onto a Molotov. MacReady gives Childs the bottle, and Childs drinks it bc the Thing doesn't know the difference and has seen the others drink from that particular brand alcohol. That's why MacReady was laughing before the wide shot of the camp on fire.

The story raises, and tries to allay those concerns about the albatross. If it could have turned into an albatross and escaped, it wouldn't have needed the anti-gravity device: "With this thing almost finished? With that death weapon it held in its hand? No, by the grace of God, who evidently does hear very well, even down here, and the margin of half an hour, we keep our world, and the planets of the system too."

My favorite effect has to be the part where the doctor's arms get bitten off by the Thing, just because of how much work went into the effect. Supposedly they actually found an amputee actor, built convincing prosthetic arms for the scene, and made him wear a mask of the other actor's face.

Too bad like all but Halloween John Carpenter has to wait 10 to 15 years after each classic (Escape from NY, Assault on Precinct 13, The Thing, Starman, Christine, and the campy and loved They Live, and Big Trouble in Little China as well as In the Mouth of Madness which personally terrified me lol. John Carpenter's The Thing will always be a timeless classic, it's just so spot on with everything. It was so ahead of its time and a lot of the themes are relevant even today like what makes us Human and the whole trust thing when people are isolated. I love all the ambiguity especially the ending, leaves you with chills and your imagination going crazy =) Great video.

In the novella the blood test did serve a purpose to the story. As the test was being prepared the only one under suspicion was Connant as he was the only one alone with the Thing as it got loose. The reason it doesnt work is that one of the two donors, Copper or Garry, donated alien blood, making the test useless to distinguish the two, and proving that one of the two most important members of the expedition was an alien. Leading the crew to believe that if the Thing could've gotten to their lead scientist or the commander, it couldve gotten to anyone, causing suspicion to grow. The novella also leaves off on slightly ambiguous note, as they failed to kill and albatross who couldve been a Thing, though they say its unlikely since the Blair Thing was too preoccupied with his antigravity device

There is a fan theory that is accepted by several modern pulp fiction writers that the McReady of the book is actually the 1930's Pulp hero Doc Savage in disguise. The evidence presented for this is Campbell's continual use of the word bronze to describe McReady's appearance, this lines up with Doc's who is described as having bronze colored skin. Also both characters have been described as classical statues come to life. Book McReady's scientific capabilities are also considered evidence as Doc was world renowned scientist and explorer.

albion65 there is also this one fan fic i found that’s written from the things point of view. Turns out it assimilating with creatures is its way of figuring out the biology of the host so as to find ways to cure the hosts of ailments and imperfections. It is scared and confused when attacked by the cast so from its view it is attacking in self defense. It talks like how a doctor wants to cure patients, implying that’s what its species was. Course the horrifying mutations i still don’t know why that happens.

It's written like garbage. It's hard to follow because the perspective and the dialogue change often and between the men that it's to know who's even say what most of the time. It's written very basic and bare, not a ton of detail going into the descriptions or the speech, or inner thoughts of whoever is speaking. There's even a chapter from the point of The Thing itself and it's very lackluster. You can find this easily available online to read for free, but you're really better off avoiding it. Trust me, I felt the same way but it's better if you just watch The Thing from Another World and pass on this story.

Campbell describes MacReady as 'bronze' so often because the character was intended to be pulp hero Doc Savage - The Man of Bronze - and the inspiration for Batman and Superman - in disguise. Campbell and the creator of Doc Savage were part of the same writing circle and often riffed on each other's work. The same friendship group is the reason for the Conan stories being so clearly rooted in the Lovecraft mythos

A great movie is often better than the book, Because a Great Movie(unless it's a Fascicle Comedy) will make sure they edit the dumb things out. I love short stories(and unlike the nitwits who got vital things wrong in this video) the story isn't a Book but a Novella that I believe was done in serial episodes or part of a anthology. And I've read that story several times and each time I cringe several times while reading it. Though it has some great moments that surprisingly has aged well, Unlike several other Things in the story that almost everyThing from that long ago suffers from.

The Thing (1982) is one of my all-time favorite movies! Although I was slightly disappointed with the 2011 prequel, I am still hoping for one more The Thing film, an actual sequel, to close out the story completely. I seem to remember an interview with Carpenter and Heijningen, the director of the 2011 prequel, and one of them said that Kurt Russell and Keith David would both be in the third film if they did one, and that the obvious aging of the actors would either be CGI'd away, or they would say they look like that due to frostbite. Those guys would be saved by Mary Elizabeth Winstead's character and some Russians from a Soviet research station, which is where she is supposedly headed at the end of the 2011 movie. They all go back to the Soviet station, one of the Americans is revealed in secret to be a Thing (I say it's Keith David), and all hell breaks loose.

6:37 The hot wire blood test is one of my favorite movie scenes of all time, not necessarily because it was scary (it was) but because I found it hilarious. While MacReady is performing the test he has everyone else tied up, 3 of whom are tied to the same couch. When it is revealed that one of them is The Thing the other two guys who are tied together with it start freaking out. Watching cool cat Keith David (Chiles) hoping up & down and screaming trying to get away is priceless camp. =D

I never understood why people think it's implied that one of them may be The Thing at the end of the film. I mean, we're all free to interpret it however we want, but to me it's pretty clear they are both human. If they are both things, why would they sit and talk as the humans there were mimicking? If one of them is the thing, why would it not attack the one who is still human? The only interpretation that makes sense (to me, anyway) is that they are both human. The ambiguity lies in the fact that they don't even really know whether or not the thing is dead. Burning it didn't kill it, so why would blowing it up work any better?

Also, another message of the movie is that every part of the Thing is a separate individual, and will selfishly fight for its survival, otherwise the blood in the petri dish would just stay silent and die, allowing the blood donor Thing to survive. In contrast, humans are social creatures who will sacrifice themselves for the common good, such as burning down the base to prevent the Thing from escaping or re-freezing. By the way, best performance from an animal, the husky, ever!!!

The reason why the John Carpenter version is so relevant today is the ambiguous ending. It's not everyone dies a horrible death and the monster wins, and it isn't the hero saves the day happy ending. It's somewhere in between. You can project a little piece of yourself into your interpretation, therefore making the movie very impactful and somewhat unique. There's a reason why we're still talking about this movie, and trying to figure out what the ending is. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. John Carpenter even plants a few subtle clues here and there just to add to the mystique, but leaves it just ambiguous enough to never definitively lead to an answer. We get a movie like this every decade or so. It's hard to believe but this movie is almost 40 years old, and people talk about it as if it's still in theaters today. Nothing else really comes close except for a few of Kubrick's movies, and of course Hitchcock.

In the Film, its clear after watching, that Chiles is the Thing, he has no breathe during the last scene as Macready does have breathe, as well as the fact that at the beginning of the film MacReady is seen going thru empty bottles trying to find a full one , half way thru the movie Macready states "he had drank all the good liqour" hence why at the beginning we see all the empty liquor bottles in his room. At the end, MacRADY IS COLLECTING GAS FOR HIS FLAME THROWER in one of those empty bottles, hence when macrady gives it to chiles to drink, as chiles drinks it Macready laughs becuase he now knows who the thing is but has no way of confronting it , no way of fighting it, thus he laughs. loved this film, and i love how many people didnt get the ending at all

MacCready is the Thing. He/It infects Childs when they drink from the same bottle of Scotch in the last scene. It was established earlier in the film that infection was another means of assimilation by one of the scientists.("everyone should prepare their own meals/food"). That's why the MacCready-Thing smiles after Childs takes a swig...he had no more enemies and just assured survival for itself....... just my opinion.....

GTFOH. Your take on the ending is no more valid than mine. As a matter of fact, the first part of your opinion is flawed. Two words: Bennings-Thing. #2) It was never inferred, or stated, in the film that ingesting gasoline was a way to expose who the Thing was......At all. At the end of the day, the truth about the ending is only known by the film's creator. Anyone else's opinion is just as valid/invalid as anyone else's.

Favorite 80s gooey horror monster goes to… … THE NORRIS THING! I mean, I will NEVER EVER forget that face, the first time it burst out of the chest. The impact… and then, the head falls off and grows legs and I mean… it just keeps going! But a terrific second spot to The Brundlefly. That last tranformation… Also, great job on the What's the difference. Worth mentioning is that the film borrows HEAVILY from At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft - a majority of the earlier scenes (ESPECIALLY the Norwegian camp) is almost lifted straight out that book! But it was fun to see you reacted to all the parts the film did better than the book as well (like the blood test).

What is not mentioned is the movie tie-in novelization by Alan Dean Foster from an early script. In that book, three THING dogs escape from the camp, and a hunting party has to go after them. When the Thing dogs run out of food, they eat a Thing dog for sustenance, similar to taking your food supply with you.

Attack on Precinct 13 was a very good gritty action film, with some very compelling characters, the original 1970s version. Carpenter had some very good films. The Thing I will agree with you is arguably his best.

I disagree that the movie is better. The movie is more suspenseful (although the original novella is still suspenseful) and dramatic, but the original is better science fiction. It has interesting discussions about evolution, molecular biology, and exobiology that are way ahead of its time for a story from 1938, and in some ways holds up better than a lot of science fiction written much more recently. Yeah, the paranoid ending of the movie is probably better, but remember that the original story was published in _Astounding Science Fiction_ , and the readership wasn't really looking for a horror story (they'd go to _Weird Tales_ of _If_ if they wanted something like that). And the movie has its issues as well, just from the demands of being an action movie. Like why do they have flamethrowers in an Antarctic research station? Because flamethrowers are awesome, don't dare question it!

The best body horror effect in that movie? Probably the head crab thing. I mean, it's so iconic and still looks great. I also loved the chest mouth. But the best part about that movie, easily, is the sense of mistrust it is able to build. We as the audience can't even trust that our protagonist MacReady isn't a Thing

This film is still one of the best scifi horror films out there. Nothing to this day can capture such a bleak and paranoia-filled atmosphere like it. Also there's a short story called The Things by Peter Watts that tells the story of the film through the perspective of the alien and it basically explained all of the films plot holes. In that story, the alien takes a long time to infect the subject and because of that the hot wire test only works on people that has already been fully converted. Not only that the alien creature was just as confused and scared as the people in the station. Since it can't grasp the fact that life on our planet has a centralized nervous system and can't shapeshift like it.
