Only Star Wars itself has topped that, and only once(at least in my opinion): The opening scene from Revenge of the Sith. It starts out with a huge display of the Republic fleet, and Obi-wan and Anakin's fighters shoot onto the screen, flying alongside the flank of one of the destroyers, with an almost serene feel, but then the fighters drop off the destroyer's side, and them, and the viewer, are immediately plunged into a massive battle.

Opening scene of Millennium Mambo is gorgeous, it's haunting, the cameramen and slight slow motion gives you the core themes of passing time, loss of path. The entire sequence makes you feel like a ghostly memory. Add gorgeous cinematography and amazing music, and it's an instant classic.

When you have the 5th Avenue and Tiffany's Co. and Then you add, Henry Mancini and John y Mercer, plus Truman Capote and Givenchy, and finally put Blake Edwards and Audrey Hepburn, what you get is perfection. The opening shot to BREAKFAST at Tiffany's perfectly sumarizes the novel title both literally and methaphorically. That scene is NOT in the book. It was especially created for the film. I have watched and re-watched the opening scene of the newest James Bond: Spectre film at least a dozen times. What makes this opening scene so profound is that it is one seamless and uncut scene. Though it's not the first to do it, it's the first I've seen to do it whilst following our hero through a crowd, in and out of various rooms, through an elevator, through multiple levels of a building, in and out of a building, and across a busy scene. That's one thing that has become synonymous with Bond films: the opening scene is always epic!

Fun fact about the opening shot from Halloween. It was kind of a milestone in cinema: They spent nearly a third of the films budget on fancy new camera equipment, what would become known as steady-cam or steadicam. This is very likely the first time ever in cinema that we see not only a POV shot with a steadicam, but a long-take first person POV "oner" on a steadicam. It was such a long shot that they had to hide a cut in the scene, probably another first, (the cut is when michael puts on his mask) because the new portable camera system could only hold so much film. John Carpenter was a badass and ahead of his time.

+benmcfee But isn't Russian Ark all one shot?
@benmcfee8 жыл бұрын
talha devci That was the joke, yeah. But when you think of it, that still technically qualifies as an incredible opening (and closing) shot.

I've seen all of these, but the opening shot that took the breath out of the audience was the opening scene in Star Wars IV. We had never seen anything like it.
@notesandlettersbillcushing77412 жыл бұрын
Didn't expect to see it, but I love giving props to the opening of Rain Man. As the crane moves and lowers the car onto a cargo ship, it sets up a disorienting mood and makes the viewer somewhat sympathetic to Hoffman's take on how disturbing normal life is for his character.

I know there are many great opening scenes... but "Once upon a time in West" not one of them? Even Stanley Kubric called Sergio Leone (director of the movie) to ask him how was he able to use music in the movie the way he did... For anyone that has never seen the movie just watch the opening scene and how music is being used. An incredibly beautiful movie... Just my opinion.

I agree that that's one of the best opening SCENES ever, but this list focuses only on opening SHOTS.

I would like to humbly suggest Whiplash. The sound of drums brings you into the movie's subject, and a great pan that is revealed to be a character POV. Really liked it.

I'll never forget the first time I saw Apocalypse Now at the theatre. Movies about Vietnam were few and far between and I was excited to see this premiere. The scene opens with this shot of a tree line. We hear this mysterious music playing softly in the background. I know this.....what is this? I couldn't place it. Then suddenly I realized it was THE END! OMG! One of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands of all time! I remember I excitedly said to my wife, "THAT'S THE DOORS!" ......Then "THIS IS THE END......" and the tree line EXPLODES! I knew it was PERFECT! I think the first Ten minutes of Apocalypse now is a Cinematic MASTERPIECE!

Some good choices, Missing Catch 22 though, a very long opening shot of a quiet sunrise suddenly interrupted by a large number of piston engines aircraft starting up. Sets the tone beautifully.

First and last shots are so much fun. They are able to set the tone of the movie and give a chance for directors to show off their creativity, so much fun to shoot.

+Andrew Wilson okay I don't know much about film terminology but don't "one shot" and "one take" have different meanings? I say this because Victoria is said to be One shot and is compared to Birdman. but i believe Birdman, although flows seamlessly, wasn't one take but more of an editing technique..?
@Serai38 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Wilson That would be why it's not on the list. If it's the whole film, then it's not an opening shot.
@matthatton37636 жыл бұрын
Yes @RSFArocks. A shot and a take are different things, but related. A take is one run through of a shot. Sometimes many takes are required to get everything right in a shot. Acting camera movement choreography and so on.

I definitely agree with putting Touch of Evil first. It's probably the best example of how Welles turned everything he touched into gold. Who else would have thought to start the sequence with such incredible suspense and flair? I just walked past the mural that pays homage to the film in Venice Beach, which has "Touch of Venice" written on it. Classic film.
@jeffbaer58512 жыл бұрын
I teach high school, and I have this scene in a slide show about the use of "details" in storytelling (part of a classic literary analysis acronym called DIDLS -- diction, imagery, details, language, syntax). When I show that opening shot, the kids are ALWAYS dead silent and mesmerized. (Of course, that's just from my brilliant teaching style...) Seriously, the brilliance of Welles' ability to LITERALLY "direct" our attention from detail to detail is phenomenal. I specifically point out where the director shifts our focus from the car to the pedestrian couple, and then we look at the specific moments where our attention is shifted again and again and again, from couple to car, car to couple, and where the focus is SHARED. It's a master class in directing.

HER (2013) it starts with beautifull music. Then the movie tries to trick you by seeing theodor(the main caracter) to speak romanticcaly. then we see that he writes letters for others which tells us hoe fake the world is and in contrast how real the future love to the OS is. it also connects the beginning with the finish. in the last sceen Theodore talks and writes a real letter to his ex wife. a masterpiece of Moviehistory

"All time" apparently doesn't count for the first half-century of the medium. Yet there are plenty of great opening shots from that time. The opening of Scarface, for example, is a long-take decades ahead of its time.

The 'bookend' opening and close of "The Searchers" is pretty good all right, but personally the beginning and end of "Hombre" never fails to give me a tingle in the scalp and a rush of something strangely akin to nostalgia. It gets my vote. (Love your lists!)

The most memorable opening shot for me - one that I rewatch as much as I would an actual film - is the one from Eat, Drink, Man, Woman. Not only is it a visual feast but after watching the film you realize that what seems to be a depiction of laborious undertaking is actually a reflection of love, a habit of lifelong skill, and a sad attempt to recapture something which has seemingly disappeared.
