The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man stomping through New York is one of the most memorable scenes in movie history. Go behind the scenes of Ghostbusters, and see how the gooiest movie got on the road to its rampage. SUBSCRIBE: goo.gl/9AGRm
The movie wouldn’t be what it is if Gozer’s final form weren’t a puffy sugary sailor man, but the journey from concept to the sticky final product was a long one. Almost everyone involved had doubts about audiences buying into a killer marshmallow monster.
We’ll take you through this scene, including the story, the effects, stunts, and pyrotechnics (figurative and literal) that brought the Stay Puft Marshmallow man from Dan Aykroyd’s script to Ivan Reitman’s final cut.
What did you think? Did we teach you something you didn’t know about the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man scene? Did you learn something new about model building? About the unfortunate plight of Hollywood stuntmen? What other iconic movie scenes would you like to see us dissect in future episodes of Art of the Scene?

The Stay-Puft Marshmallow scene is my favorite scene from any movie ever. From that moment when Gozer asks the Ghostbusters to pick their opponent, I was glued to the TV as a kid & it still gives me goosebumps today. The reaction of Ray when he realizes that he has just chosen a giant marshmallow man is comedy gold. Then Stay-Puft appears & it's just amazing. This scene doesn't get enough recognition because this is the scene that made the original Ghostbusters a beloved classic. If you remove it & just have them fighting Gozer for 5 min., it doesn't have the same payoff as Stay-Puft. How many other films have taken a fictional character, put them on the screen for less than 3 min., & turned that fake character into a universally recognized character that will forever be loved by the fans. Oh, & he's supposed to be main villain too.

I like that he's mostly hidden for a few steps, then revealed to Ray's narration. Why Lucas didn't do that for Jabba the Hutt is beyond me. He's just there, without an over-the-shoulder glimpse first. Then he went back to put him in the special edition, and even the prequel.

@Flint McFreely Apparently there are a number of subgenres you've never heard of. Like slasher. Not exactly art house cinema - and so homogenized and predictable that they spawned another subgenre: the mock slasher film (starting with Scream). And if you think CGI is homogenized or easy, you haven't been paying attention. You're like the old guy with the lawn, saying how easy kids have things nowadays. Things can be done in CGI that CANNOT be done in practical effects, making more variety /possible/ - and there are just as many lazy directors now as there ever were, not more than, using formulas instead. You're perfectly welcome to not spend your money, you know - just don't expect everyone else to believe in the "good ol' days" when the actual evidence is available for viewing. There are a great many excellent older films, going right back to the beginning - but they aren't excellent because they lack computers. They are excellent because of how well what was available was utilized to tell and/or enhance the story. Just. like. movies. made. today.

hi, i'm sorry for answering you so late but i'm in my first year at an sfx makeup and practical effects school which means... i'm no computer. cgi will never replace visual effects and all those stuff as it is... plain and only good to use in background or combined to practical effects. jurassic park was made with both cgi and practical effects and puppeteers. i know both legend movie (ridley scott's) and jurassic park were made before your "vague cutoff date" but that means nothing. look at the remake of predator. cgi is not that good. and look at a lot of characters nowadays, lots are made with visual effects and sfx makeup. my point is, you can't use cgi everywhere and say "oh i just used a bunch of computers to do it" cause it's not true

There was a time where I liked Ghostbusters 2 more than the first one. Now I see them as equal but when I was growing up they switched places a couple of times as all time favorites #1 and #2. Never any lower. And as far a sequels go, Ghostbusters 2 is probably one of the better examples of what a sequel should be. A continuation of the story, adding new elements to the universe of said story, introduce new characters, bring back old ones, and stayed true to the feel of the original while not trying to out do the original

Or pick just about anything. * PANIC ROOM (2002) The propane gas scene! * FIGHT CLUB (1999) The smiley-face fire on the office high-rise. * THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (1973) The spinning room with the nine planet avatars. Really, pick anything, we just want to see you pin down Jodorowsky for an interview. * INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (1984) The minecart chase. Of course. * NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) The Mount Rushmore chase. * ROSEMARY'S BABY (1968) The, um, fertilization scene. Dream. Thing. * ALTERED STATES (1980) Pick anything from the transformation. * THE WICKER MAN (1973) The ending, not to spoil it. * THE OMEN (1976) When the maid hangs herself. * SCARFACE (1983) The climatic shootout. * APOCALYPSE NOW (1979) Ride of the Valkyries, dude! * DR. STRANGELOVE (1964) Major Kong riding the bomb. There, that ought to be enough to get you started.

You should do the girl version of GhostBusters! BTW what was your favorite lines in the movies mine was the "We came, we saw, WE KICKED ITS ASS!" and "oh baby" when they were talking to the slime, "oh vegie vegie vegie you've been a bad monkey!" "IF SOME ONE ASKS YOU IF YOU ARE A GOD YOU SAY YES!" and " i love it when you ruff house" And last was "mother puff bucket". And some thing I was wondering is which movie did you like more the girl version or the boy version, And if you have never seen the movie that you didn't like it you should get on that its one of the BEST edited movies ever if you ask me but if you have watched the one you didn't like don't watch it! Any was here is a couple more questions. What was you favorite monster, ghost, or just big monster/ghost because my " favorites" were state puff, I don't know his name is please tell me if yo know but he's like the huge tariffing logo monster in the girl version, slimmer, the princess ghost from the girl version, and well this isn't really a ghost but my last "favorite" is the Titanic ship. This is my 2nd last question, what was you favorite ghost busters or character my a were the orange haired lady at the front desk, the other orange haired lady in the girl version, the two adorable babies, Louis, Ray, and last the boy who liked Dana Barret. My last question is what was you favorite scenes my were the one guy who liked Dana Barret was spinning around and hoping on one foot and as mother one I liked with him in is when he said "I LOVE IT WHEN YOU RUFF HOUSE!", and last that one where the man with the glasses, I think his name is Spageler any way when Dana kisses him and he smiles. That's all of my annoying questions. Please don't be embarrassed to tell me your favorite lines, monster ghost or some big monster/ghost, GhostBuster or character, which movie do you like, and last your favorite scene oh and if I said things like please let me know his name please let me know and if you don't know don't say any thing! Definitely do something from The Shining, either the bar scene with Lloyd or Nicolson's "I'm not going to hurt you" speech going up the stairs. Thanks : )

I'm still not quite sure why they decided to choose an existing building in Central Park West but re-model it to seem many more stories taller. Like, why not just choose an existing building that's already that tall?

The bank robbery scene from HEAT would be perfect for a show like this.

"it Seemed to me very appropriate that when our Monster finally appeared it turned out to be a marshmallow that literally and figuratively our biggest fear the unknown was is insubstantial as a marshmallow" So say it Harold Ramis: The man behind the Twinkie theory.

I would love to see a video that shows the stuff that was directly "inspired" by scenes from Battleship Potemkin. So many great scenes from other great films give direct homage.

Well you can't help but like the idea since it suits the story so well I mean that 100 foot marshmallow man comes to life after a simple "thought" when the human Ghostbuster crew are forced to choose from the top of their heads what form the main antagonist has gotta take from a legion of evil ghosts 👻 that have the power for such an possibility I mean if anyone else was there They could have ended up thinking about their favorite rock star Or favorite action superhero Or even their own mother At that point where anyone could of so easily thought of pretty much ANYTHING And some parts about it gives you goosebumps when that 100 foot blob man is in that final battle Like for example when he makes it to the building from that veiw and puts on the "I'm gonna getcha" look Gets blasted by their weapons Blows flames at them while caught on fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 And gets blown up at the end along with the doorway gate and building top 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥 Those scenes fit in kinda nicely in the finale battle Like the gargoyle like dogs roaring Being zapped when they ordered gozer to leave ⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡⚡ When they fired and she leaped into mid-air And the earthquake when she makes them choose And the rest till that building explosion at the end 💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥💥 U gotta admit for a silly idea for a destructor form It does get rather thrilling And once u understand the story then it doesn't hurt to throw it in there And when it comes to the sequel The bottom line is "Focus more on the creativity and even use your imagination" Leave that criticism from political correctness issues out of it

I'm fascinated by Akroyd's original script which I believe not only was much bigger but had Ghostbusters as an everyday emergency service as common as the fire dept. I'd really have liked to see some of that make its way into a Ghostbusters 3 than this horrible re-boot that's coming.
