Cinema 4D + Redshift Tutorial: Create More Realistic Fog

I've been over this technique before, but I wanted to update it with some new ideas/renders by Matthias Zosel. Find his site here: motion-design.berlin
He created some epic renders with gorgeous, realistic environment fog. He send over some tips for how he used Noise in his environment to break up the fog to make it look better. It's a great technique and I'll show you how to do it in Cinema 4D and Redshift. Enjoy, and huge thanks to Matthias!

We can also export volume aov , then on AE, add a fractal noise solid on top and make the volume layer lumamatte, we can play around with the evolution and the scale to make some animations on the fog , it works great

Thanks Joren! A pre-created noise volume material can be found under > Create - Redshift - Utilities - Noise Volume. Just if you want to skip a step. :) Would be great to see a tut on how to mix an environment object for fog, and volume objects (like clouds) in the same scene. While being able to control their volume contributions seperately. I always scratch my head with that combo and spend too much time messing with the light project tabs. Mindlessly excluding and including things until it works :/

From a real world perspective, you wouldn't generally have both fog and clouds visible, right? Like if you think about a really foggy day, you never see defined clouds in the sky, it's all just one big soup. Another thought would be to make your cloud object large enough to cover your entire scene, so it acts kind of like clouds and fog all in one.

@@DynamicPhil84 hey. I just Googled foggy day and it seems that's not the case. But anyway I'm seldom creating realistic scenes. So it's relevant to me quite often. Good thought tho! Edit: I should add that the environment shader isn't only used for thick fog, but also haze in large scenes. Which would be difficult to emulate with a cloud volume object.

@@thepixellab2011 Nice tip Joren! Redshift fog is soooo much faster and easier to handle than Octane fog. It's like night and day (pun intended) :)

Well, it would have been nice if you could show us how to create those beautiful renderings of the fog with rays as in the example. The one you did was really not that impressive 🤔
