My English is not the best but I can understand you very well. I deal with CGI just for fun. Your tutorials, however, fascinate me enormously. I remember CGI with Lightwave about 10 years ago. So slow but fascinating. Guys continues to do so perfect work. Volumetric light in octane would interest me very much, as well as doe co-operation with XParticles and TurbolanceFD. a little correction david: direct lighting is not biased. it just dont use any secondary bounces for GI. this is most evident when u have multiple layers of glass or light something behind glass
@octanejesus7 жыл бұрын
Hey so I checked into this further, but it's still my understanding that DL is biased, whereas PT and PMC are unbiased. For instance, look at the bottom of this thread: render.otoy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=45622&p=228625&hilit=Direct+Lighting+biased#p228625 As for the glass thing, you can fix that by turning on fake shadows, and you can also crank the specular depth in DL mode, though I'm not sure if that will give you as good of a result. I am pretty sure DL is calculating multiple bounces though, as those are sliders in diffuse, glossy, and spec depth that you can crank, which represent the number of bounces.
@voodoorampager7 жыл бұрын
Hey david. Its still unbiased in a way it still a brute force method...it doesn't quantize or cash as far as i know. It just doesnt do the secondary bounces. In any case im a big fan of ur work :) looking forward for more tutorials 👍🏻

Thank you for your incredible work. I've been learning so much from you. Have you tried "new" vray for c4d (3.4) btw? I find it much more comfortable than octane now. It has got some cool features, super fast "live viewer" as well.
@eyedesyn7 жыл бұрын
Send you thanks to David, he rocked this tutorial! I'm not sure about VRAY, never used it. Perhaps David can speak to that!
@octanejesus7 жыл бұрын
I used Vray for c4d on a project back in the day but the render times were so insane (1 hour per frame kind of thing) that I never really got into it. It was also difficult to set up materials and I was overwhelmed by the complexity. Vray for c4d has also, in general, been years behind the official Vray for Max and Maya, and in the grand scheme of things, looks to be losing favor. Octane has a huge community, is blazing fast, and is pretty easy to pick up and learn. Arnold, Redshift, and potentially Cycles, seem to be the biggest contenders at this point, unless you're in Max or Maya where Vray is still totally legit and awesome.
@MrMeeezo7 жыл бұрын
That's actually the answer that I was looking for .. A friend of mine who is a Max user introduced me to the V-Ray Rendrer for C4D, it was nice overall , but it was overwhelming , very complex ,and also way behind the V-ray for max , just as you described ... so I started digging into other renderers .. I see Octane is the best option for C4D till now .. now if you could make a tutorial about how to render animations for compositing in AE , and Multi-Pass renders ... I think i'll be able to make my final decision and go with Octane all the way :D
@octanejesus7 жыл бұрын
Awesome! Yeah a multipass compositing tutorial is on the list for sure!
@adamfilipowicz92607 жыл бұрын
The current Vray for C4D is very close feature wise to the Max version. there Instant GPU Preview is still fairly new and not that far along but they are making great progress. I Love Vray and Octane

David, EJ, which is the best renderer that Cinema 4D has, Octane or Physical?
@greekboi3577 жыл бұрын
Also, thanks for the tutorial. It is awesome! I also love how calm your voices are!

Sonething that is really helpful in C4D is that there is no need for UV mapping, unwrapping etc, that other programmes needed like 3Ds Max or Blender or Maya
@octanejesus7 жыл бұрын
haha glad to hear it
@octanejesus7 жыл бұрын
you can actually UV unwrap, and in many cases that workflow will get you the best results (especially going to substance designer and painter for instance), but it's true that not many artists do it, and you can often get away with just a cubic (box in octane language) projection.
@eyedesyn7 жыл бұрын
Octane is by far and away faster. Physical is nice in that it's 100% compatible with everything in Cinema 4D, but it's not enough to justify waiting for those long render times. Time is money! No one wants to spend their lives looking at slow render buckets!!!! :)

To be fair Arnold is a more expensive product. It has defiantly proven its' weight being used for projects like the Lego Movie but I can defiantly say Octanes price point makes it great for freelancers and small studios. Thus the reason why it seems a bit more popular.
no worries, i'll be keeping the regular C4D tutorials coming as well! :)

$20 a month for Octane VR! It's a full version. The only caveat is you can't use more than 2 GPUs. Check it out: home.otoy.com/render/octane-render/subscriptions/
