@@mynameisnonofyourconcern8685 totally, it has happened outside of postpartum like when a parent decides to take their own life and that the "right" thing would be to take their kids with them because theyd be unsafe in the world. Its heart breaking and awful but this show shines a light on the side of the parent (in a supernatural way) and how vulnerable they are in those moments, it allows us to feel empathy for someone who is doing something horrible under the belief of it being something good. Idk I really like how this show tackled so many serious subjects with kindness almost? the characters have a variety of flaws but we still care about them in the end, we see their individual sides, their pain and we understand.

I always find the old lady ghost interesting in the grand scheme, because until she had the "she lies" line I just assumed every ghost in the house was evil, but that line turns it on it's head because now you start doubting whats evil and what's not, and even her "scary" moment was when she was playing with Luke and Nell while they were investigating the sound-tube she used to communicate from her bed can now be viewed in a different context, maybe she wasn't trying to scare them, and instead was playing with the children in the same way she would have done while alive. Even the bowler-hat man that Luke saw technically didn't do anything to Luke aside from freak him out, he just wanted his hat back (although we never see what happens after he catches Luke under the bed, it's entirely possible he was just going to actually tuck Luke back into bed after he found him under it). The whole series seems to be about perspectives, and how they can be misunderstood, like the disfunction between the family, and even how "malicious" the ghosts actually are (Poppy is a straight-up bitch though)

The saddest thing about this episode is that Olivia was ALMOST free. She was out of the house and free of its influence. All she had to do was wait for her head to clear. She went back willingly, the house didn’t call her, but she gave into her fears. And that’s what killed her and set it all in motion. Obvi Olivia is not to blame for it, she was coerced, blackmailed. But part of the tragedy is how much could have changed if she hadn’t gone back.

Probably the most disturbing episode for me, not in the supernatural aspect but with the house's/poppy's relationship to Olivia. They prey on her like an abusive partner, almost gaslighting her until she's unable to discern reality from her 'dreams' They take a parents worse fear (something happening to their child/being unable to protect them) & play on it, manipulating until it gets the reaction it wanted from Olivia (her deciding to lace the tea with rat poison) a moment for Carla Gugino too! what a great actress she is, even without speaking she's so expressive. Low key jealous of how beautiful she is, really great casting all round, they're all pretty & do really look like they could be related. Great reaction guys, so not ready for it to be over!

15:50 re: "She's doing it." (pushing her) ->I think the tragedy is that she didn't, really. I've always loved the contrast between Nell only falling after Olivia gave her a kiss on the forehead and thus giving her the final push, and then Poppy being ready to physically push Olivia (after emotionally pushing her relentlessly of course) but then it wasn't even necessary any more, Poppy's hand never connected, Olivia was too far gone already. That's the true tragedy depicted in this simple parallel. Nell didn't want to go, she needed to be pushed off. But the house broke Olivia so badly that she jumped of her own accord in the end
@porkfrog27853 жыл бұрын
a sort of hidden horror to the show is based on predetermined fate: the house shows her her daughter on a table and the son w/ a needle in him like it's predestined. poppy isn't the one who killed the man in the walls, he really did brick himself in. mr. dudley was telling us the story how his mother would go into the woods and giggle like a schoolgirl, and the main theory is that his mum and mr. hill had an affair and the guilt made him brick himself in, so when he died, she could only see him in the woods as it is still on the house property also, the beginning scene that you cut out was meant to show you that she feels guilty for not feeling them growing up aka "leaving her arms"

all of the other ghosts were chill, Poppy was the one manipulating Olivia, the other ghosts just happened to die there. The house is, well a house for ghosts. The part were Poppy is talking about having a nightmare of her kids dying was the story of her ACTUALLY killing her children, she was insane, she wanted to do the same to Liv. Definitely shades of Stephen King in the story, but the source material - the actual book "The Haunting of Hill House" predates anything Stephen King wrote. I think King actually read the book and some of it inspired him to write horror as well. The book characterization is vastly different as well, plot wise. The original 1950's film and the more recent movie from 1999 with Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta Jones and Owen Wilson follow the book plot a bit more closely - both those version are worth a watch. The 50's version is really creepy for the time it came out, while the visual effects for the the late 90's version havent aged all that well, it's still retains a bit of the creep factor. And I always enjoy watching whoever plays Mrs Dudley with her monologue....."in the night......in the dark." Heheheh!

One thing I noticed is Poppy doesn't blink. (Though there is one moment she did, not sure what that means). But throughout her whole monologue, she doesn't blink. The opening paragraph of the novel is among the all time great novel openers: “No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.”

I love how throughout it shows how the house has a hold on them. With Nellie, even at the end there were flaws and she had gaps in the illusion that were real life. Like her holding the rope and realizing it before the house covers it up with another illusion. And how even then after she puts the necklace on she can feel the rope instead. With Olivia she constantly fights with her illusions, like at the door she fights with Poppy because she knows Hue wouldn’t hurt the kids. The houses illusions aren’t perfect, but they are unfortunately strong enough to get Nellie before she fully realizes and Olivia succumbed to them fully(so even after death she has the houses beliefs)

How does one even begin to try to judge Olivia knowing she was emotionally and mentally tormented and opts to poison the children to keep them "safe"? For me, the true horror is not the ghosts of the house, but the endless sadness and heartbreak people feel as depression sets in deeper and deeper, and no one seems to pay attention or know how to help.

From the original book and movie: The Crane family built Hill House and Abigail was one of their daughters - she dies (of natural causes) in the house. Her caretaker hangs herself from the balcony. Her room is locked until the end of the story. In the book the bedrooms are each decorated in a specific color - when the kids say they want "the green room" in the show it is a refence to that. Mrs. Crane (actually 3 of them as Mr. Crane remarries) dies either in the house or on the grounds. You NEED to watch/review the original film "The Haunting" not only to see just what an excellent adaptation of the book/movie this show is but to see what a great scary film it is. Avoid the 1999 remake at all costs. Carry On!!

Hooray for the realistic and horrible depiction of a rat poison death. Also, not all the ghosts were bad. The House (Red Room) actively feeds on the lives and sanity of people living in it, and Poppy is insane to the point of actively helping it snare victims.. The Hill Children (wheelchair lad and the moving statues) are not, they just kind of are there. Hazel Hill (the old lady) is actively helpful and tried to warn Olivia not to listen to Poppy, Edward, Hazel's son (burnt corpse that crawled towards Luke in the basement) just wanted someone to know Poppy killed him, William Hill (bowler hat ghost/corpse bricked up in the basement) just wanted his hat back and was curious about who had seen him, after scaring Luke he just left, and the dogs they heard on the property were Hazel and William's father Jacob, spending his afterlife on an endless hunt for nothing with his beloved hunting dogs, who he loved more than his own children (to the point that the day after he died, Hazel walked out to the kennel and shot every one of them dead)

Dunno if you guys noticed, but each one of the characters of the family, represents the steps of grieving

Carla Gugino‘s acting in this episode absolutely blew me away. Shocked she wasn’t nominated for an Emmy. She really brought so much intensity and love and sadness to this role. Really stellar performance.

The lil girl was dead in the red room the entire time. When the mom came to a realisation, she saw the girl but she looked decayed asf. Asif shed been dead for ages, not just died.

I'm finally all caught up. I love how they were actively looking for ghosts in the background, but they're still missing about 90% of them. LOL!! This is why I strongly suggest (again) to watch videos about what you may have missed.

I think you missed it. Mr Hill sealed himself on that wall. Poppy did not kill him. Poppy was crazy in life so she is crazy as a ghost.

Early in the season when Steve/Hugh are getting interviewed Hugh tells the cop he wants the house locked up and he wants the dudleys to stay on as the caretakers.

I mean, if somebody is offended that heroin is referred to as a poison, they need to reassess some life choices.
