Hugh was always a good dad. He tried to protect his children even when they were grown up. Like when the tall man was standing in front of Steve and his dad kept saying "Look at me. Look at me." But his children didn't realize how good of a dad he was until the end because in trying to protect them he kept too many secrets within himself.

He was a great dad. This is a highly unusual situation and no one would ever be prepared for it. Kids are just kids so they think adults are all powerful and should know it all but as kids become adults they should learn perspective and view their parents with a lens of grace.

I love the little details that make these characters seem so real, like the way Theo puts her hands to her mouth when she's worried or scared. She does it as a child when luke comes back up the dumb waiter and we see it again in adult Theo when they think Luke is dead.

Just realized this after A second time watching the full series, the time jumps of the episodes, the filling in the gaps in pieces is just like what Nell says in the red room, time isn't a straight line, its like confetti, falling all around. The show isn't told & the hauntings AREN'T in linear time.

I felt like Shirley was such a hypocrite. When she thinks her husband cheated, she refuses to hear him out. Then we it's revealed that she cheated, she has them sit down and talk. Maybe it was just her way of ignoring her feelings, but it made me mad.

I think it's a coping mechanism - if she sits down and has a conversation with Kevin then she has to confront her own infidelity. As also mentioned by Kayos it's a projection of something she hates about herself

Only Poppy and Olive are the ones harming the family, not the house. The house just keeps the ghosts -- most of whom are harmless. Poppy convinced Olive that she needed to kill her family in the house -- believing that they were better as immortal ghosts then as people in the dangerous world outside.

I had a different take. I think it really was just the house, but Poppy is the personification of the house's evil appetite. As each person dies in the house, they become consumed by the house (red room is the stomach of the house), and the longer it goes, the more they become more like the house's personality, especially if they were unbalanced to begin with. But it all begins and ends with the house. The final shot when Hugh enters the red room to be embraced by Nell and Olivia -- look at their faces. Nell closes her eyes and is at peace, but Olivia stares back at Steve with those evil eyes of the house.

The ending is by far the worst part of this series. Why they chose to go for a "happy ending" with an adaptation of a gothic horror story, just totally baffles me ^^

I love it. Basically all horror movies go for the GOTCHA they are still in the house! ending, and this was original and refreshing. Such a cliche in a horror series to go for the trick depressing ending.

I found this to be the weakest episode of the series. The mother should not have been rewarded by reuniting with her family after murdering Abigail. The house should have won. As always: finish Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy: 2)Prince of Darkness and 3) In the Mouths of Madness.

She could have smothered her children to death in their beds, but didn't. Only her children warned her of their suffering and meaningless lives.. Abigail was innocent.. The mother should have paid for the murder.
