“i was so lucky to be your dad” GOD THAT LINE MAKES ME CRY EVERY TIME
@pinchetono133 жыл бұрын
Several fun facts and small details about this episode: -In the original ending of this season, Mike Flannagan and the writers intended for the family to die and remain trapped in the room; with the final shot of the episode being of the rectangular window on the back wall that was present in all the members’ ‘rooms’. -In the first episode, Steve states that ghosts can be thoughts, memories, fear, pain, and guilt. The nightmares the Red Room trapped them all in are variations of their guilt, insecurities, and pain. -Within every nightmare, there are small and subtle splashes of red present within the scenes, indicative of the Red Room’s influence and manipulation over each kid. Steve is wearing a red cardigan during the final convo with his fake pregnant wife, Shirley is wearing a red blouse at the bar and at her wake, and Trish is wearing red lingerie as she seduces Theo into submission. -On the topic of the color red, Olivia is wearing a completely red nightgown, sadly symbolizing her spirit having completely succumbed to the Red Room and house as a whole. -In Luke’s nightmare, little Nell says two words, “go” and “don’t”. Both are words Nell’s spirit has told Luke before. Nell said “Go” the night she died and Luke woke up at rehab and saw her spirit. She said “Don’t” during the final rites as Luke squatted over her casket. Time falls around like confetti, so I interpret these words as being warnings ahead of time, so he doesn’t go to the house and to leave the Red Room. -Trish’s story about a man enclosing himself behind a wall is in reference to William Hill, Poppy’s equally crazy husband and the body the dad found in Ep. 8. But the final lines of that story where William ‘woke up tall’, connects the Tall Man with the cane and bowler hat to being William’s warped spirit form. (His skeleton also had a cane and the photo Ms. Dudley showed Steve shows him with a bowler hat). -The shot of Luke’s 2 year anniversary has 7 people! His safety number and a complete/whole family 😢😭

I think if you die in the house you stay forever but whether you turn into a monster like Poppy or the tall man or retain your humanity like Abigail or Nell depends on what kind of person you were upon death. The house "eats" people but it isn't really good or bad, it is like an animal eating. What is really dangerous are the people trapped in there trying to pull others in. At least that is my take on the hopeful nature of the ending.

That’s been my take on the house. I think the house feeds on energy and emotion, like a sort of psychic vampire. It lures people and makes them comfortable so that they don’t know they’re being fed on. The house itself didn’t kill anyone or actively seek their death. It was Poppy who pushed Olivia over the edge and Olivia who was calling her children back to the house so that she could keep them with her. I mean, Hazel Hill lived in that house her whole life and died of old age.

I believe the mom is 100% redeemable. Just like the horrible “dreams” about Nell and Luke she was tormented with were the house and not actually the kids, the thing responsible for killing Nell was not actually Olivia, but the house. Same goes for Abigales death. When Olivia sees Abigales body after she’s thrown against the wall we see she’s horrified and has no idea what happened. As both Hugh and Nell said before, “that wasn’t mom.” Even the deal Hugh has to make in the end was with the house and NOT Olivia. We know because he says SHE always said their job was to prepare them to go out into the world. The REAL Olivia was every bit as good hearted as Nell.

it hurts because it rings true: if you're 'the anchor' or 'rock' emotionally, the one who's always there, you will be taken for granted to some degree...people don't miss their water till the well runs dry. This show nails some of the bitterest truths of family which is why it hits so hard for many. A thing not explicitly touched on is the devouring mother archetype, who suffocates her own children thru holding into them too tightly, not desiring to ever have them leave. Funny enough, I heard a 68 year old talking today about kicking her 47 year old son out of her house. I thought 'well that's yer fault' but didn't say it. The mom in the show would think it's nice...I remember hearing someone who had a grown son living with them ask me if a 38 year old I know still lived at home, and that's exactly what she said, 'That's nice' no. It's horrifying

I think one of the things that makes me really love The Haunting of Hill House is the characters arc of overcoming their fear sort of parallels the viewers journey watching the show. First, for someone like me who wasn't yet a fan of horror you sort of have to "meet fear halfway" when just deciding to watch the show in general. You know going in you're going to be afraid and yet you still willingly click next episode as you become more invested in the characters. In terms of the finale as the characters overcome their fears, especially with Steve and the boiler hat ghost, the ghosts lose their sense of evil and villainy and some good can even be found in them like with the Dudleys. Its for these reasons that I highly recommend this show to all of my friends but especially to ones who "hate scary movies" because overcoming the fear of being afraid is what the show is all about.

As a parent I understand the fear that the house was feeding on with the Mother. She was so scared to let them go out into the world, all the bad things that can happen. She wanted to protect them by keeping in the house forever. I feel this with my kids but if you keep the kids under your wing forever, you end up doing so much more harm. This point is made when the dad and mom were talking. She never wanted them to feel sadness or pain but they would never feel anything ever(ie death). They could never love, know happiness in that house. One never took risks(lives life) One never was sober(self worth) One never touched(community) One was emotionally cold(love) One scared of potential illness(future)
@SoulkeeperSora3 жыл бұрын
Exactly this!! I think I'm even more forgiving of Olivia because it isn't just that the house has twisted her into wanting to kill her kids, it's the themes of her wanting to "protect them from the outside world," and being a parent, a mother. UGH it's all done so well. it's interesting to draw a parallel with the Dudleys, where they basically hid Abigail from the world and her curiosity ended up being a big cause of her death. They essentially killed her by wanting to keep her sheltered forever. In that way their ending is really bittersweet for me because I understood that they were loving but I don't think they were good parents to her, whereas Olivia and Hugh still were to four of their kids.
@stayville883 жыл бұрын
The house, although it fed on peoples fears, is...kind? It allows families to stay together in a way. Bittersweet was a great description. I like to think that when its the rest of the families time, theyd all go back to the house to die with their parents and Nell. This show was an absolute masterpiece. It's also important to know that time is not linear in the house, which is how everyone was able to have a room in the red room and how they all saw their past, present, future, and what if's.

Thank you for the double reaction features. Here are a few of my favorite things about the Haunting of Hill House in no particular order. While the perfect castings of children and their adult counterparts had been so roundly praised, not enough had been said about the ideal casting of Henry Thomas and Timothy Hutton as the dad. Both superbly captured the character Hughe per their performance in their timeline without using makeup to make them look alike. Shirley was named after the author of Haunting of Hill House. Shirley is also the most damaged character because of what she did. Her action so guilted her that she became so self-righteous to the point that she had forgotten her infidelity. This a great example of adaptation and reinterpretation of a novel while still capture and expand upon the original theme of the book. I think this is one of the rare few shows/films where I preferred over the original source, and that is not to say Shirley Jackson did poorly, but without her conception, we would never have Haunting of Hill House. In the novel, a group of professional strangers coming to sturdy a haunted house. At the same time, Mike Flanagan made these strangers into a family and extended their trial and tribulations into decades made the story from great to better.

My theory on hill house is that Poppy lost her kids and her husband and went insane. She was lonely, so when she died, she desperately sought out a new family to replace the ones she lost. Even though her entire family died in the house, she still felt like she was missing something. The reason they waited so long to bring everyone back to hill house is because that was their weakest point as a family, so it would’ve been easier to manipulate them and pick them apart. The house is a predator, but not just for the sake of being malicious. Misery loves company.

This time it was Hugh talking about having to use both hands to keep the door closed and having no hands left for his kids. He worked so hard, and still had to watch it unravel. I know he should have handled it better but I'm not sure how he could have done it in a way that would have "worked"... Or maybe that's the point. There wasn't a way that he could've explained to the kids, and that's exactly what trauma does. It's not your fault, but it messes up everything around you. Your relationships and mental health can be ruined as a result of things that happen to you, instead of by actions you take yourself. How do you get past that? How do you rebuild?

Re plotmapping. Episode 3 or 2 in a flashback one of the kids says, they will get the older brother from the game room. And the father is like "where??" then carries on as the kid rushes off. You only notice on the second watching.

When Nell says she got her cup from the toy room Mrs. Dudley was confused/the mom said ‘very funny’ when Steve says he’ll get Luke from the treehouse

I've watched this series a dozen times, and every time I am amazed at how incredible the writing and acting is, and the story touches me deeply. This will be a classic for many years to come.

Steven's last speech literally WAS him reading from a book... HIS book.

Actually it's from THE book. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. The monologue that Steve says at the beginning of the show and at the end is how the real book begins and ends. Well in the show they might have changed a few words but for the most part it's the same as in the book.

Bly Major had me crying for 30 minutes after I finished watching it. It’s seriously so amazing and good!! I can’t wait for you guys to see it 😄

In my podcast, I gave this season a perfect 100% score! True Detective season 1 was nearly perfect for me, but to me, there is no show that is as perfect as Haunting of Hill House! I have recommended this show to several people, and have watched this show 3 times, as well as seen many KZbinrs react to this show, and I never get tired of it

If you like this directors work, check out "Oculus." Also, Steve's weirdly "Book-like dialogue" is often paraphrased or even lifted directly from Shirley Jackson's original book, which is why it seems a little at odds with the modern dialogue.

Not sure if you guys realize that William Hill (tall man) is Mr. Dudley's father. When Mr. Dudley recounts his history with the house he mentions that he was born there, and that his mother worked there. When he starts talking about seeing his mother sneak out at night and hearing her sounding like a school girl in love. She was having an affair with William Hill. Mr. Dudley of course doesn't know this. William Hill boarded himself up in the wall out of shame, guilt, and insanity for cheating on Poppy. Trish, Theo's girl tells his story in her nightmare at the end. Also the ghost who took Abigail with her when she died was Mr. Dudley's mom, Abigail's grandmother.

Such an amazing show and ending even though it's incredibly sad. 😔 I'm so glad Luke fought back and survived. Everyone was so good with their own personal struggles and challenges.

Thanks, Shaun! Thanks, Tom! ☮️ You made it through this brilliant series (I don't think I'll ever see another meticulously-crafted, relationship-based horror in my lifetime)!!! 💎 I hope you both do THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR very soon. It's a more straight-forward tale, but it does get interesting and more complex from the 4th episode on. I also recommend you compare it to the previously best-executed version of it, THE INNOCENTS (1961). What made that tale so brilliant was its *ambivalence* - but THE HAUNTING OF BLY MANOR takes the inspiration conceived in 1898 (under the title THE TURN OF THE SCREW) and gives it the *certainty* that a modern audience demands.

I bought the DVD set of this because of you guys watching and reviewing it. Thanks! It was a pure joy and heart-wrenching at the same time. I love the ending where the family are happy again even though they'd suffered so much loss. Band of Brothers is way different but also well written and very touching and heartbreaking, especially since it's written about the actual Easy Company (the unit). It's one of my husband's favorite series.

Dad didn't have the red room moment, because the house was his red room, and thats why his episode theme was "fix it". House kept him bussy, while it devoured his family.

It's all the small details that you don't even see on first viewing that also make this show so unsettling, like the way the statues randomly change which direction they're facing across episodes. Your subconscious knows somethings different but you're not quite sure what . . .

I didn't scroll through all of the comments, but I strongly suggest you see The Haunting (1963) based on Shirley Jackson's book, The Haunting of Hill House. Flannagan remade this as an homage to the book. If you see original The Haunting, you'll see funny connections like - Julie Harris was the star, and the funeral home was Harris Funeral Home. The Crain family (including Hugh) were the original inhabitants. The characters were named Theo (who was also a lesbian), Eleanor (Nell), and Luke. In fact, the actor who played the original Luke played the psychiatrist in Flannagan's film. The Dudleys were still the caretakers, but not so likeable. So much of the dialogue was taken directly from the book, so that's why it sounded like poetry - it was taken straight from Shirley Jackson's classic.

I agree with the minor, minor criticism of the dialog. You can often tell which few lines were lifted straight from the original book -- it's a different type of writing. More stilted, definitely more cheesy. Like Mrs. Dudley's "in the night, in the dark" speech. I honestly think they should have left most of those lines out, but maybe they were trying to honor the original.

this ending was beautiful wasnt to cheesy but wasnt to cold that it became depressing loved this show soooooooooooo much

I loved how each of the kids represented one of the 5 stages of grief. Steve was Denial. Shirley was Anger. Theo was Bargaining. Luke was Depression. Nell was Acceptance. Also, each of those correlated with how Nell woke them up from their nightmares (ex: she woke steve up by touching his head/mind, getting rid of his anger).

Anyone notice the way Olivia stares at Steven when she's hugging Hugh in the red room? Nell's eyes are closed and she's smiling happily. Oliva is not happy with the deal she made. Her spirit will remain restless without her children.

I've seen this series several times now and it still amazes me. It's so emotionally powerful. I love how the siblings each represent a stage of grief. I can't wait to see Mike Flanagan's next series, Midnight Mass which lands later this year. I'm sure you get lots of recommendations, but I highly recommend Marianne on Netflix. It's a French horror series. Really spooky and fun.

Thank you both so much, it was great getting to relive this series with you. I watched it when it first came out and am now reminded about how much of a masterpiece this really was. When you watch it a second time you really do catch so many things you missed the first time, and that is true art when every time you experience it you get something new out of it. You guys and your reactions are amazing. So to make a long story short (too late) Just wanna say you guys are amazing!
