This movie is so underrated when it came out. After parasyte, I'm glad people are looking more at bong-joon ho work and this film started getting recognition. I didn't know this was based on a French sci fi graphic novel.

@@YodatheHobbit Calm your tits, nobody is "rewriting history". It´s just commonly known, that not that many people know about this movie. Just because EVERYONE who saw this movie said "Oh, you MUST SEE this one!", doesn´t automatically mean, that a lot of people DID see it eventually! Critically acclaimed doesn´t always mean popular and vice versa......

Fun (not really) fact: Apparently, in the scene where they look into the machine and see the roaches being ground up into food, they weren't originally supposed to be roaches. It was originally supposed to be the feces of the rich. The people at the back of the train were supposed to be literally fed rich people's shit. But they were told they had to change it to something a little less revolting for audiences, so they switched to roaches. You can actually see if you look closely and pause that the stuff in the fact looks kind of like shit and they just added some digitized roaches on top to cover it up in post.

I never realised that people didn't necessarily love the ending, I think it's perfect (and actually more radically hopeful than a traditional happy ending) ; Curtis refusing to perpetuate the system and sacrificing his life to give an actual chance to the future generation was the right choice.

I remember renting this when it came out and recieving this incredibly deep sadness and confusion, but also a vague "that sounds about right for us as a species" there, too. One or two misguided assholes can make everything miserable for a lot of people. Thanks for covering and talking about it. It's nice to get some latent validation to what I felt back then. i think your ratings are definitely fair! it's an interesting film because i think it's not the BEST dystopian story and it's a bit heavy-handed, yet somehow the imagery and ideas REALLY stick with me and horrify me more than other films. like i wouldn't give this film a 10/10, maybe an 8, but it's still just so iconic to me for its uniqueness

I was the only one my friends (all of whom I dragged to the theater to see this with me) who loved the ending. You can't overthrow an entrenched system from inside it; you have to go outside of it to look for solutions. So blowing up the train just felt right to me. My favorite analysis of the film looks at it from an economics perspective - Wisecrack's "SNOWPIERCER: Can We Build a Better World?" kzbin.info/www/bejne/aKrHeX9rrNCggNE

The part that most people miss in this film is that most of the people in the tail of a train were never suppose to be there. They stormed the train, the rich helped finance the train being made when they saw that the chemical would destroy the world, they prepared for when the “Global warming nuts” killed everyone. So, when they forced their way on there was not food for them. They had to come up with a way to let them survive, so they grew a food source for the poor to eat. But not till the numbers were low enough to sustain them, which is why all the time passed at the start with no food or water.

Dont know what the directors view of the ending might be but for me its like.. sometimes it might just be best to try out something drastic and different, towards the unknown with a sliver of hope, rather than continue with the same old shit thats clearly not working well. Its a risk, last of humanity will likely just die with it in the context of the story but was their existence humane in the first place? Life adapts and goes on even without humans.

This movie is truly amazing imo. The deeper you dive into the messages and meaning/metaphors etc of alot of this movie is fascinating. I actually like that it's a dark movie, more realistic in a way. Every movie doesn't need the cliche happy ending/happy tones throughout to be good, it makes you feel different emotions. I wish there was more movies like this just for something different. It’s a rare occasion where I think a movie could have benefitted from a few more characters surviving, or at least lasting a bit longer. Jamie Bell’s character needed to die, that choice needed to happen but I think it could have happened a bit later and maybe have someone like Octavia Spencer’s character last till the end. Losing them all in that sauna scene was like you said deflating. Also my ONE gripe is that we never see a sleeping cabin, we see saunas, jacuzzis, nightclubs, drug dens but never once where the rich people sleep. I get we can’t see EVERY cabin but we know they went through it. I just think if your going to try and make this train idea “realistic” you can’t miss that, even if it’s just a glimpse.
@starbrand3726
@starbrand3726 2 жыл бұрын
This movie was a wonderful satire of class inequality. Technically, if the train had adopted a more equitable distribution of resources, the people would have lived better. True, the First Class would have become less, but the Tail Section would have become more. A balance would have been achieved. What the First Class in any society doesn't understand is that they can only enjoy their elevated status for only so long before the oppressed class revolts. This has happened in every civilization since the dawn of time.

Back in 2016 it was revealed that Bong Joon-Ho and Song Kan-Ho (who played the security expert) were actually on a government blacklist (there were 9000 artists on the list in total) for making movies with themes like those in this one. From what i saw online they were actually already on it when Snowpiercer was made so getting funding was hard.

I didn't know this. Just looked it up. Pretty shocking to see that conservative South Korean governments tried to starve any artist they considered too liberal of funding and therefore work and yet not shocking too. I can see something like that happening in my own country today. Makes me wonder if Song Kang-ho took on the very political film 'A Taxi Driver' after the blacklist was revealed almost as a big fuck you to the kind of people who'd made it hard for him to get work for a few years.

+Cinema Rules another wild modern sci-fi film is *District 9* P.S. I think why you may be let down is because this movie got so hyped up due to it not being well known and it just grew to success because of word of mouth. It was released in theaters but only limited to certain theaters. The way I found out about this movie was renting but from Redbox for a dollar because of Chris Evans and being told it is an adult Hunger Games. Also I remember seeing a single commercial one single time. That being said I think the hype train happened (pun intended) because most people when they saw it didn’t know anything about it and didn’t hear anyone else talking about it. So I think the shock of a from my knowledge at the time a straight to DVD movie being this well done and thought provoking.

Blew me away when I watched it. I think the problem (which you guys had) was the lack of a positive payoff after so much suffering. Nooo the hero died. But he died for a good reason. It's a similar ending to Train to Busan, but a whole lot bleaker. I felt dismay that so much of the train was completely destroyed coupled with the implication that only two people survived. I agree with it being a 7.6-8…I can see both, and I can understand why people would rate it less, just because it’s so heavy and dark. I am glad you both said you’ll be thinking about it more, as I think once I watched it again and really had a think about it, I appreciated it more. While I was unsatisfied at first with how they dealt with the old leader at the back of the train, I think now that I like that there’s some ambiguity to who he was. Maybe he did partner with Wilford at some point but had a change of heart…maybe not. But I either way, he *did* play a vital role in making Curtis who he was, eventually bringing down Wilford’s train and rigid, cruel class system. I think there’s something beautiful in that- even if Wilford meant for his part to be part of Wilford’s plan, it still wasn’t determinative of Curtis’s fate.

Yo, I think you guys "get" it - for just the off the cuff thoughts immediately after the first viewing, you guys did great! I've noticed something after watching a few vids on your channel though that I think might be unnoticed by some who will criticize your scores: I think you guys give generally low scores to things across the board - in other words, you don't really grade on a curve and appear to reserve really high scores for like the best of the absolute best in film. I and many others (not everyone, obviously) don't really take this approach. I would give this film a score somewhere in the 9's because well, I legitimately think it quite easily sits in the 99th percentile of all films in terms of objective quality. I am just assuming you guys reserve your "9 and ups" for a very very select few films that make a HUGE impression on you, which is not necessarily wrong - just a different way of grading! Anyway, glad you liked the film. There's lots of cool youtube video essays about it that dive into the themes and stuff. Cheers :)

Also I think the dystopia guess is right. The film is a critique of capitalism, just like basically all of Bong's other films. That reminds me, watch all of Bong's other films! Okja, Parasite, Memories of Murder, The Host, Mother, watch all of them!

I feel like a lot of the components of this film would’ve been more successful if it was Bong’s vision fully realized. unfortunately parts of it were scrubbed by the production company (might’ve been Weinstein? I’m not sure). I even heard Bong had to fight to keep that fish gutting scene in by lying and saying that it was an homage to his father who was a fisherman lol

A sy-fy movie you guys need to react to at some point is Dark City. So good, so underrated. Well worth a watch. Be sure to watch the directors cut for the best experience. 👍🏻

I hope this doesn't turn you off from his previous films. Definitely agree that there's some clunkiness in the korean to english adaptation. Felt that with Okja as well. His 3 films in the 2000's are much better than his 3 in the 2010's. Those 3 are better than Parasite imo.

I was one of the lucky ones that saw this in the theater when it came out. I loved every second of it but had issues with the ending originally. Now I think I have a better understanding of it. It’s left a bit open to interpretation, like many Kubrick films, that it’s a possible new beginning for life or death is waiting for them outside as well. In any event, if Tilda Swinton is in it, I’m on board.

I always tend to rate movies higher just after watching. And then it comes down after i think more and analyze. I don't remember, maybe i gave it 9 eventually and then 8. Something about that. Maybe it helped that i went to watch it without much expectation. It was during movie fest in my city (2013 or 2014). All i knew that it was Korean sci-fi about a train. Somber is the right word and that was the point of director/story writer, i guess, but i see your point that it doesn't give much hope and bashes you into depression. If people are so bad, then what's the point? We need a little hope, so we don't give up on humanity. But not every movie should be well balanced in this sense and that's ok. Anyway, movie is great. The ending is a bit weaker with maybe not hope for the people, but for the planet to get back to life. Oh, and that Curtis monologue before the last gate, it is hard to forget.. Man, you are watching one gem after another. Keep it rolling! :)

This movie is best understood if you have read [and understood] Plato's Republic - it is an extended meditation on what it takes to form an ideal and sustainable Polis - of course [as in Plato] the result is insane

I had avoided watching this film because I was afraid it was going to be a 1/8th Korean / 7/8ths American film. I'm delighted it appears, in terms of story, theme and character development, to actually be 7/8ths Korean and only 1/8th American.

The Day After Tomorrow is a good example of a nature based apocalypse. And I find those more engaging than man made apocalypse because it's a far more unpredictable circumstance and it really is out of your hands. Something man made, at least you can follow the steps to fixing something but you really can't do that with nature.

From Dusk til Dawn is a good film to try - it’s by Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino. It’s a film that changes genres half-way through. It’s better if you don’t look up what it’s about so you get the full experience. Basic premise is two brothers on the run are trying to get to Mexico after robbing banks and escaping prison. But what I tell there is a complete 180.. it is like two different films in one and they’re both amazing. It’s action/horror. Should def check it out if you’ve never seen it.

This was the film that put me on the path to Korean entertainment. Definitely give the American tv series a go. I was unsure how much could be done with such a small contained world and rather direct plot, but they pulled it off. It's been renewed for a third season I believe. For some sci-fi suggestions try Fire in the Sky (1993) and Guillermo del Toro's Mimic (1997). Also, since I haven't seen a reaction vid for it yet, give the Director's Cut of the 80s fantasy film Legend (1985) by Ridley Scott a go.

Great review lads. Tom, I totally get where you're coming from regarding the ending being so bleak it kinda bums the whole thing out and I highly recommend for you the netflix series. Still super dystopian but a lot more nuance to most of the individual characters, and overall more hopeful in the face of bleak odds (but still with plenty of challenge and grit).
