I really enjoyed this movie. It wasn't a 'good' movie, no, but it was pretty fun, and I liked Johnny Depp's acting. Of course, it probably helps that I didn't really know about the original soap opera prior to seeing the movie, so I had no expectations regarding it.

Pretty much my opinion
@wolfcrow48228 жыл бұрын
I saw most of the soap opera in the nineties when it was shown on Sci-Fi and watched the TV movie and the later mini-series but I still loved this. Burton does things for cinematic effect not accuracy, which I guess accounts for a lot of CinemaSins 'sins', period. The original soap was basically written pretty much from week to week so poor continuity and corniness are quite accurate and were part of the original's charm. This movie is the best fun if you're in the right mood.

2:26 - you mean like Hitchcock and blonds in gray suites? Great directors have a fetish and it is genius. Tim Burton does it and it is creepy ?? Also, a dozen more sins for just marginalizing the original cast, which was why 90% of the audience came in the first place. Why have them on screen if you are not going to use them ??
@blacksage23758 жыл бұрын
As you point out Tim Burton is not a genius director so it comes off as just another sign he can only make one movie. Also he *did* sin Taratino's foot fetish in the The Hateful Eight so your proclaimed double standard is nonexistent.

Barnibus had a sister, but she died at 8 or so of the fever. Victoria Winters and Maggie Evans were two separate women as well. Elizabeth is Carolyn's mother, Carolyn's song entrance is actually a tip of the hat to the original show where Elizabeth thinks she killed her husband carolyn's father. It turned out he didn't die and it was all a scam to get money from her. That was the reason they were going into debt, Elizabeth paying a man to keep quiet about her accidental murder of her husband. It wasn't just her brother running them into the ground.

The only way that Barnabas could have living descendants without having any family members would be if he got Angie pregnant. This makes her character seem even more like the rightful heroine of the story as it means that, rather than just having a quick fling with a servant girl who couldn't let him go, Barnabas actually had a quick fling with a servant girl and then left her to be an unmarried single mother in the 1600s (one of the worst times to be an unmarried single mother) just so he could marry a girl with more money.

In the show's lore the painting was commissioned, I believe as a wedding present, but then witchy shit happened stopping the wedding, because his father survived in this version of events, and then adopted some Collins from another city explaining how the estate stayed in the Collins family hands for all these years, he stores the painting away knowing how important it had been to him.

Mid 17th century is in the 1600s, not the 1700s. So either Barnabas migrated over to Maine in the 1600s and you got the 150 years off by an entire century, or Barnabas migrated over in the 18th century, either case showing that your calculations were done wrong.

As someone who has seen the original series, Roger is supposed to be a strict disciplinarian, not a deadbeat. The whole "Roger cheating on his sister" thing might've made some sense in the original, as the same two actors played Barnabus's parents. As for Caroline and "where's daddy?", for quite a while there was this whole subplot where Ms. Collins thought she killed her husband, and.... you know what? It was a soap opera. Those things are damn confusing.

My father was a teenager during the 1970s he said that there where hippies in vans like the 1960s but not as much as the 1960s at least they didn't get as much attention. 6:28 Barnabas' reply would be sexist not racist. Also doctors in the 18th century in some parts still did bloodletting. The girl is Pheifer's character Elizabeth's daughter not the David's sister his father and Elizabeth are brother and sister. Angelic killed David's father off screen. Angelic is also made of porcelain that is why she appears to have white skin in some scenes.

Tim Burton, like myself, was a fan of the original show (and quite possibly the reboot in 1990). In the original show, Josette married a Jeremiah Collins, who Barnabas killed in a duel. The family was carried on by Barnabas’ younger brother Daniel. Also in the original, Carolyn wasn’t a 14 year old tyrant. By the time Barnabas showed up she was a lovely woman in her twenties. The movie has many blaring mistakes, but it’s still fun. For a better abbreviated version of the Barnabas story, I suggest “House of Dark Shadows”, which is available on Amazon.
