I really enjoyed this movie. It wasn't a 'good' movie, no, but it was pretty fun, and I liked Johnny Depp's acting. Of course, it probably helps that I didn't really know about the original soap opera prior to seeing the movie, so I had no expectations regarding it.

I saw most of the soap opera in the nineties when it was shown on Sci-Fi and watched the TV movie and the later mini-series but I still loved this. Burton does things for cinematic effect not accuracy, which I guess accounts for a lot of CinemaSins 'sins', period. The original soap was basically written pretty much from week to week so poor continuity and corniness are quite accurate and were part of the original's charm. This movie is the best fun if you're in the right mood.

Johnny Depp has three levels of acting. Jack Sparrow, sober jack Sparrow, and Johnny Depp. He's a great guy...but his range as an actor is fucking pathetic, and his career is only still alive because of pale, fat girls that are obsessed with Burton movies

One thing I don’t understand about the werewolf scene is, why did the witch have her enemy’s daughter turned into a werewolf? I mean, why give your worst enemy such a powerful ability which will come back to bite you in the ass... LITERALLY!

I think locking him ina mausoleum would actually make more sense then burying him in the woods. You find a coffin in the ground somewhere that isn't a graveyard, someone's gonna wanna open it (some people don't watch horror movies), but you find a coffin in a mausoleum, you don't think twice about it, because that's what's supposed to be in a mausoleum. Well, that and a bunch of teens getting drunk and/or high (probably and).

One has to wonder: If Tim Burton was such a fan, why did he make it into a comedy. The orginal and the remake TV show was NOT a comedy. This movie would have been so much better if taken more seriously. He could still make wink-winks, but this movie was not funny, not scary, not interesting in anyway. Except that scene where he killed those hippies. That was a good scene.

This could have been awesome. Talented cast and director, and a story based on an old soap opera starring the COOLEST FUCKING VAMPIRE Barnabas Collins. The fatal flaw was that for some god forsaken reason they made it a comedy. The original show was dead serious, with Collins struggling to keep his vampirism a secret while suppressing his urges to feed. Why Hollywood? Why this shit? I waited in line for two hours at a midnight showing with original fans of the TV show Most of them were disappointed because this was more of a comic version and the orig show was done in a serious tone even though there were countless flubs and blunders caught live on tape back then, the actors on the orig show played it straight which made the show work.

Another thing you forgot is Anelique states upon Barnabas' arrival that they had fun on the piano. That type of piano with 88 keys, sostenuto pedals, cross-stringing, and duplex scaling would not be in totality invented as the full modern piano pictured until 100 years after Barnabas was initially buried. The piano he and Amgelique would have had romps on would have been a Cristofori piano which would look and sound more like a hammered harpsicord.

Barnabas vampire, actor Jonathan Frid who Johnny Depp and Tim Burton used to watch as kids themselves

Barnibus had a sister, but she died at 8 or so of the fever. Victoria Winters and Maggie Evans were two separate women as well. Elizabeth is Carolyn's mother, Carolyn's song entrance is actually a tip of the hat to the original show where Elizabeth thinks she killed her husband carolyn's father. It turned out he didn't die and it was all a scam to get money from her. That was the reason they were going into debt, Elizabeth paying a man to keep quiet about her accidental murder of her husband. It wasn't just her brother running them into the ground.

The only way that Barnabas could have living descendants without having any family members would be if he got Angie pregnant. This makes her character seem even more like the rightful heroine of the story as it means that, rather than just having a quick fling with a servant girl who couldn't let him go, Barnabas actually had a quick fling with a servant girl and then left her to be an unmarried single mother in the 1600s (one of the worst times to be an unmarried single mother) just so he could marry a girl with more money.

As someone who has seen the original series, Roger is supposed to be a strict disciplinarian, not a deadbeat. The whole "Roger cheating on his sister" thing might've made some sense in the original, as the same two actors played Barnabus's parents. As for Caroline and "where's daddy?", for quite a while there was this whole subplot where Ms. Collins thought she killed her husband, and.... you know what? It was a soap opera. Those things are damn confusing.

Also doctors in the 18th century in some parts still did bloodletting. The girl is Pheifer's character Elizabeth's daughter not the David's sister his father and Elizabeth are brother and sister. Angelic killed David's father off screen. Angelic is also made of porcelain that is why she appears to have white skin in some scenes.

No he doesn't. He doesn't say that. The video does not extend to the time slot you claim in your comment. You have posted an erroneous statement easily proven false by a simple click upon the conveniently blue-colored numbering provided by KZbin. This is important. We must all realize the profundity of this mistake. The more of us who stand up and join together in this issue, the less likely such mishaps will occur in the future. We may live in an age of errors and falsity, but our children and grandchildren and even remoter posterity shall inherit a world of truth and light.

And what the hell did they do to Willie Loomis?, in the original series he was a young opportunistic thief who opened Barnabas coffin in search of jewelry. They just used his name for a completely different character.

Dark Shadows was a soap opera that aired in the 60s. It focused on the paranormal and the supernatural, and it was brilliant. This movie didn't capture any of that brilliance and it was such a disappointment

Also note that the movie and the series have _entirely different thematic tones_. The series was a horror series, and a pretty good one, considering when it came out. The movie... not so much.

Because this specifc KZbin-User felt a feeling of approval to this fucking movie. Liking stuff is not rocket science and it isn't always tied to specific reasonable arguements. Hell, my reason for liking this movie is "I like Tim Burton-stuff" and that's it.

At the 10:44 time in video not only is this Jonathan Frid(original Barnabas) but also Lara Parker(original Angelique), and David Selby(original Quentin) as they walk into the ball together. Don't blink.

8:08 I disagree with that Sin, coffins are tailored to exact measurements, even if you're rich, people can't make a coffin in a few hours, most of the coffin in their shops are for exposition and unless he get extremely lucky there's a chance the coffins are either not in his taste, uncomfortable or simply not his size. So the gag is funny and plausible. I'd be very good at cinemasins *ding*

I love the movie, it is very diferent from other movies which is what i love on it the most, the originality and also the visuals, fact that the movie has such a dark vibe and such a bright visuals makes it hillariously scary, like i always get shaken up after watching this, still very lovely movie

growing up listening to classic rock, this movie is a guilty pleasure of mines because of the OST bangs. I don’t know if I prefer this or the soap. I’ve been binge watching your videos, great shit.

Tim Burton, like myself, was a fan of the original show (and quite possibly the reboot in 1990). In the original show, Josette married a Jeremiah Collins, who Barnabas killed in a duel. The family was carried on by Barnabas’ younger brother Daniel. Also in the original, Carolyn wasn’t a 14 year old tyrant. By the time Barnabas showed up she was a lovely woman in her twenties. The movie has many blaring mistakes, but it’s still fun. For a better abbreviated version of the Barnabas story, I suggest “House of Dark Shadows”, which is available on Amazon.
