My explanation for why this sort of thing happens is that people have really strong parasocial feelings so when they watch videos on Hasan's channel they think of it as watching a video "with their friends". Unfortunately, that's not what's actually going on.

Hasan’s whole career is taking other people’s work and showing it to his audience. Without this content aggregation he could fill maybe 15 minutes of a stream a day. It is why he is so defensive, other people’s unpaid labour is all he has. On KZbin, editing makes transforming someone’s work into a distinct product far easier as you can choose to only take the relevant parts and creatively alter even what you do take. On a livestream, you just have a pause button. A no effort pause button to go along with the no effort content. I find it worse that Hasan has convinced countless thousands that his particular form of exploitation is okay. A business model where all the labour you use to generate profit is unpaid is the wet dream of every corporation. Imagine generating millions in profit and brand growth on the backs of countless non-consenting writers and content creators, and feeling absolutely no need to give back. Worse, throwing a hissy fit whenever people point this out and then claiming to be a socialist that is concerned with worker exploitation.

He got popular because he streamed for ungodly amounts of hours EVERYDAY. That worked for him and made him successful. Because of his dedication the server he was streaming on favored him, so did the people who knew they could just watch him whenever they wanted. What he did/does works, and makes him more money in this system. This is how he built his career. So, it's not bold to say it's all he knows. With this I hope we can give more effective feedback so he learns something. He probably won't though... He's been on the firing line too much to be receptive to disagreement, from comment sections.

Clarifications and corrections: Hasan's business email IS publicly listed in his twitter bio, which I literally show on screen but somehow didn't notice while making this. It still shouldn't be a creator's responsibility to check but disregard any points about it being unclear how to contact him. That was a massive brain fart on my part. "Why did you wait 6 months to make this video?" I always intended to make it, but had other projects I wanted to make first. "Why are you making fun of Hasan for forgetting a word?" That was not my intent. There are a few jokes in the segment where I cover Hasan's reaction, and maybe I didn't understand him as clearly as I could have, but the important point of that section of the video is that spending 2 minutes making vague comments is not enough to meet the standards I outline in this video. If you have one takeaway from that section of the video, please make it that. "You are pretending this is all of Hasan's react content when he is actually known for pausing." No, I am not. You were not paying attention. I explicitly say in the video at 10:12. In the streams of Hasan's that I watched for this video it seemed pretty clear that this is something he generally only does while he's eating. I do not believe there is any excuse to EVER create a react video without even attempting to transform it or shoutout its creator. I use the word cabbage as a joke insult in this video along with the words rhombus, muppet, and lemon. Apparently there are parts of the world where cabbage is an ableist slur? I suppose there are some things you can only find out after you post the video and someone tells you. Hopefully the context makes it clear that I was referring to the food, and not trying to invoke any other meaning the word has. Still though, here's a clarification just in case.

When I first came to Twitch in 2011, there was this streamer who took a break every hour. He spent the break playing video game music, with on-screen credit for artist and game. Now, 2022, there's a streamer I enjoy who takes a break every two or so hours and shows fan art during his breaks, accompanied by non-DMCA music, all credited. I found many great soundtracks through those breaks. So yeah the length of the stream sounds like a lousy excuse to me. You can just pause the stream, or turn it off entirely if you are away for a longer time. I enjoy reaction videos because seeing people give their thoughts or get excited or surprised at stuff is fun to me. A lot of streamers who's regular content I do enjoy just... sit there and do nothing. And Hasan can't even do that, lol.

The issue with pausing the stream, the video, etc. is that the viewers aren't there for the streamer. They're basically watching a curated "program" with a chatroom. They're not there for *reaction* content. They're watching TV with fake internet friends. I don't think the viewers or the streamers of this kind of "content" are entirely aware that that is what they are doing. Because literally all it would take to improve your optics and massively improve your optics is a one-line overlay at the bottom where you copy/paste the video and channel name.

I also watch streamers who stream for 8-9 hours say "i need to pee/grab food/etc., give me a minute" and leave the stream with nothing happening for a moment (sometimes with a sign or something to tell people they'll be back). The "he has to take a break" thing implies that hasan has an obligation to entertain his viewers throughout the entirety of the stream- even if that means just playing someone else's content- which seems to negate the entire argument. I genuinely cannot see someone having "good intentions" to stream someone's content and then not even watching it at all.

Their response is almost always some variant of, "I can't EAT exposure." I assumed that was just standard practice since I rarely watch livestreams, so I'm really amazed that Hasan seemingly doesn't perform very basic pre-planning for the thing that appears to be his job.

That's what's wild about this, and I think Jay said this in a previous stream/video about the topic-Hasan could very easily put out a tweet asking for original content to play during his breaks. That way, he gets to continue entertaining his audience while he's away, *and* the content creator has approved their content being played on stream. Great video. It's crazy how willing fans are to bend themselves into pretzels defending anything their favourite does. What's even more infuriating is that it's not like these massive channels are struggling. If you've got over 1k viewers live, you can afford to put up a 'BRB' screen for a few minutes while you take a dump. Tell chat you're having a break, hell, if you care about the money then run some ads during the time (lmao just kidding twitch ads pay streamers less than filling out those surveys for cash sites). Hasan ain't gonna come back after 3 minutes to find all of his viewers gone and bank account empty. People rarely see the hours to days to weeks of work that go into a video - planning, researching, writing, recording, editing, thumbnails & titles. Many, including myself, LOVE if someone reviews, pulls apart, discusses or talks about their video. I had some response style videos for an anime/manga review I dropped an age ago, and they were a treat to watch. But they weren't just someone watching the video and nodding along. They were a fellow creator putting the effort in to make their own video that used mine as a jumping off point, which is a great honour that merely restreaming a video does not provide, let alone all the realities of credit/exposure/clout claims.

I agree with everything you said but would like to add an argument that isn't ever used by these Streamers but many think the thought. I can't understand it but it's there. If they were to actually go ahead and slap on a BRB Screen for longer than a few minutes (idk more than 5 - 10 mins) their viewership drops, chat engagement slows down etc. which is to some level a valid Point to be brought up. Since their "Engagement" literally persist of Chat going Bonkers with cringe Comments and Emote Spams and they themselves know for how much of a clownery their selling themselves for on these Platforms. Not to mention how "bad" it would be for them to pause stream by actually ending it while taking a real Break like a normal person for once while they cook, use the restroom or maybe even go for a walk (if you're into that) etc. and then start streaming again later. I 100% don't endorse this behaviour when done the way many of these big Streamers do it. I also hate how some of these big streamers force themselves "having to Stream for x Hours a Day/Week" but we can't forget they technically need to at least hit a certain goal for their Job to be profitable enough to keep doing it. I would claim that is borderline a self-inflicted toxic Work Environment and Exploitation but they chose to do this as their Job so how bad should i really feel here? To be fair to Hasan there is SOME validity to what he says, when I stream and go on break it almost always comes with some dip in views (I'm a small streamer so it's like 2 or 3 of the 11 views I have go away) and I've seen the same thing be true for bigger streamers, if they put up their break screen people will leave to watch someone else and won't necessarily come back when the break's done, and also twitch streamers at Hasan's level do have an obligation to stream a certain amount of hours every month which is why this current trend of react content has cropped up recently, that said they still should just suck it up and put up break screens when they need to pee imo and if you're gonna react to something, tell your followers in no uncertain terms WHO made the thing you're reacting to

I've had problems with this for a long time particularly when it comes to Twitch streamers, but of course never bothered to say anything because as you showed in the video, people will just call you a baby, complainer, etc. (Yes I know streamers aren't the only ones to make terrible react content). So what I'm getting here is folks like this feel entitled to not only play other people's content wholesale without adding anything at all or even being present for it, but also that they feel they should be allowed to make money off of this. Meanwhile the basic courtesies of doing a proper reaction, or shouting out the original creator and showing their name and channel so that everyone can benefit, are entirely beneath them.

There is an issue with something like partnered streamers like Pokimane and DisguisedToast "reacting" to FULL ANIME SERIES on stream: It gets views. On a podcast I listened in to, Jschlatt mentioned that he streamed Mario Kart with a few familiar names and got the standard view spike at the beginning and slowly fell off. He then said his next stream, where he reacted to something, the views just steadily increased. With minimal effort being put in, he was getting much higher views, all because he attached a popular series he was watching. Streamers that have to put on a show for Twitch's partnership contract are perfectly fine. A relaxed stream with a little reaction is fine, as long as you're willing to put in at least a little effort. However, putting on a video and just sitting there, leaving to use the bathroom, or watching full-length copyrighted movies and shows, is _lazy_ and _disrespectful_ to the source material.

Toast was actively trying to get banned because it's free publicity and because he doesn't like the lack of clarity from Twitch, so he was trying to get them to do something. I know this sounds like some wild theory by me, especially if you've never watched him, but he talked about it _before getting banned._ He's an interesting guy. I guess he's a guilty pleasure of mine because it feels like I shouldn't like him but I do anyway.

DMCA takedowns are a really dumb way to get banned, though. Sure, you don't have to do anything horrible like an ass flash, but companies ironically punish DMCA issues harder than other offenses. I do agree, post-ban return streams give a LOT more attention and revenue, but risking your entire channel on something that gets a hammer drop rather than a wrist slap is _dangerous_ , mate. Streaming exclusivity contracts are a lot more tenuous when big companies want you punished, iirc. (Btw I'm not saying you're making anything up, hahaha. I've seen some of Toast's content, and can 100% believe it. My issue is with the intent and risk in his methods lol)

I love the "anti-react harder" argument. Like the idea of adding content to the content you're watching has to be boiled down to "scream and laugh" instead of actively adding your own dialogue and perspective. It's not about how much emotion you're putting into the reaction it's about how substantitive that reaction is. A good example of this is Asmongold, while reacting to videos, after each point is made he will provide his own argument against the point or will agree and explain why he agrees. He is adding content to the original piece by expressing his own interpretations of what's being shown. Oftentimes his reactions, which the video is paused for, will be 2 or 3 times longer than the video itself. His edited down youtube videos of him reacting to content are longer than the videos themselves. I also love the argument that "he streams for 12 hours a day" and that's supposed to make the breaks where someone elses content just plays uninterrupted and he reaps the benefits from it okay. Again, Asmongold does reaction content to multiple videos in a single day and he also pauses the video whenever he goes to the bathroom and will END THE STREAM WHEN HE WANTS TO GO EAT. Plenty of other streamers will actively put up a "i'm taking a break, brb" tab up when they're taking a break and need to leave their setup. I even have a perfect solution to reactors who don't want to put any effort into their reactions. Put up a black screen on your streamlabs overlay, take 5 minutes to give out information to the chat on where to find the video and give them a chance to pull the video up for themselves. Have them minimize the window so that it fits into the twitch window with the reactor's face in the corner. Get everyone to mute their window so you just have twitch's audio. Have everyone simultaneously play the video when the streamer is ready. You have now given the content creator all the views while you also have all the views and have successfully double-dipped without offending anybody. Sure, some of your viewers might get annoyed that they need to... *checks notes* take 30 seconds to search for a video and resize their window, but you have both helped the content creator get legitimate exposure and algorithm activity, but also gotten away with the exact same amount of effort. This even works for youtube reaction channels. You can make your reactions EVEN MORE beneficial than 200 extra viewers.

There are a lot of examples of Hasan responding to almost every point brought up in a video. It's kind of annoying and I don't watch him as much because I've heard most of his opinions on certain topics. I don't defend bland react content, or just leaving videos on, but he often will do exactly what you say Asmongold does. If he did maybe 6 hour chunks or something, this would rarely come up. Also obviously crediting and throwing a donation to creators on stream would be much better.

The best reactors only show parts of the video and elaborate using their own specific knowledge of the subject. That's transformative and fair use. Showing the entire video is not.

I have such a love/hate relationship with reaction content. I love it, yet everytime I watch it there's always something about it that pisses me off. When it's done well its great, but so many people just sit there in silence instead of actually reacting and adding to it. I want to see the reaction! Not just someone staring vacantly as the video plays in the corner! It's very frustrating. Usually I'm watching reactions to things I've already seen, and I want to see someone react to something I love! To see them fall in love with it too! I want to see their REACTION, not the video I've already seen! It's very frustrating.

Personally I make a distinction between reaction content and videos that add commentary to something. Reaction content really is the most accurate way to describe the bad side because at best all they're doing is showing you their reaction. Adding commentary is, in my opinion, much closer to something like a breakdown video where you explain what happens in a piece of content and then add your own opinions and analysis, the only difference being you show the content first instead of describing it.

I think that it all comes down to the para-social a lot of viewers have with streamers. To them it’s not so much as watching a reaction as it is watching it with them. And sometimes when you watch a show with a friend, they leave to use the bathroom or get food. It’s by no means healthy, but it helps explain how his fans feel. It’s a para-social relationship under the guise of watching a reaction.

When people say "Streamers have to Stream for 10+ hours, therefore they can't always "be on" for that long duration and need breaks but still chooes to keep the camera rolling" is just an implicit admittion that said Streamers can phone it in and their fans won't care. It is that or they are playing someone else's content to maintain duration time, while they rest, meaning it is just taking someone else's hard work for themselves. What does this say about the fans, apart from that they are just loyal to their internet-senpai and aren't there for any consistent product other than a familiar face, they're attached to? If the stream was remotely organised they could be respectful for instance if you are going to steam from 12:00-20:00 have a big meal at 11:00 and have snacks on hand like a little samwich maybe an oat buiscuit or a chocolate to keep energy up that you can snack during. You could also say "oh after this video let's take 10 minutes" and have a "on a break screen on" while you do stuff. I have seen several "12-24hours of something for charity streams" and I think a great example was during Tom-ska's gaming stream when they were switching the games around they'd play a pre-recorded,not seen before clip, of him and his co workers playing bord games that would last about 5 minutes so they had time to have a snack, go to the loo and switch the concoles or software. Another good example is from the now gone anime campaign, ttrpg by jello apcolyce either just after or just before a big plot point they'd take a break, usually about 10 minutes, and they'd do it usually about 3 times in a 7-8 stream, they used the group to their advantage as they'd be 6-9 people there at once so usually they'd tag team as 2 people would stay initially and do Q&A with the chat untill a replacement person came back. I never watch Hasan's streams, but I had heard of him and knew he was a very popular streamer. A stream clip where Hasan reacted to the video of a youtuber I watch a lot popped up in my recommended. I thought "oh it'd be interesting to see what Hasan thought of that video and it'll give me a chance to see what his content is like." I ended up completely baffled feeling like I had basically just watched the original video for a second time.

If one streamer shows thousands of people that same video, we only get paid for one view, with 0 additional views if there's no link or mention of our name anywhere in their stream or VOD.

Only exception is if they play too long a portion of the music in some cases - which is why most streams mute music in their videos. So they don't lose revenue from using other creators work.
