@dr103 something is not good if it cancels out major plot points of the whole show, season 12s ending completely makes the ending of the time of the doctor unimportant, if the doctor is the timeless child and has unlimited regenerations then why was the doctor given more by the time lords, it would be pointless. Just that one episode did an insane amount of damage to thr integrity of the show and its past events, and there are still 9 more episodes in that season and 19 more episodes in the rest of thr Chibnall Era. You can't say that it isn't bad.

The brilliant thing about the previous doctors in NuWho has been the fact that the Doctor puts on this facade of being odd and fun, but underneath that he has a dark side that you see come out in Family of Blood or A Good Man goes to War. He's got a lot of pain, anger and regret, which the companions help him deal with. The 13th Doctor has the odd side, but doesn't have the layers beneath it, so it just comes across as hollow.

@@DMG00111-p Smith never really watched it before he got the part, his first audition and the general goofy feel of the character were established early immediately and only then did he go and watched the show, including lots of classic episodes. I think that's a really good approach because it gives the actor the opportunity to find the broad direction of their character without being tempted to copy but can also make lots of small improvements based on the lore and other peoples interpretations.

Everyone forgot, including the writers. It's such a random thing to give a character anyway. What was the thought process? We want one of the new characters to have some sort of disability but we can't have them in a wheelchair or something because the show requires a lot of running. I don't know anything about this condition but I have seen people online who say they have it saying that he shouldn't be able to run as easily as he does and that bit where he's shooting the laser gun (or whatever) wouldn't be possible either. So they picked a totally random thing then did no research and had no follow-through. Lazy.

The weirdest thing to me about praising the episode "Rosa" is that it is fundamentally flawed in its plot. The characters in the episode act as if Rosa made a spontaneous choice to sit in the front of the bus and if she didn't sit in the front of the bus at this one particular time, she might not ever do so. But... in actual fact, Rosa and her friends had planned to make this sort of statement. It wasn't a spontaneous act at all. She was choosing to sit in the front of the bus at this time, yes, but if she hadn't been able to do so on this particular date, she most likely would have done so at the next available opportunity and history would've gone on mostly as it otherwise did, with no real change at all. If you take that into account, then the whole plot of this story is nonsense.

You'll find that most Historical episodes in NuWho are merely inspired by the events they portray, such as in Tooth and Claw they renamed Victoria's guesthouse TORCHWOOD to have the plot work. I think it was Chibnal knowing that would have to be changed since it undercuts this "this is her choice." and showing the little group of the protesters was also showing the planning behind the CRM which Rosa kickstarted.

@@gracekim25 I so agree. Plotlines need to be partially driven by characteristics of the characters and characters need to be people we care what happens to them. The emotional attachment can be that we like to wish them bad things to happen to them or like to wish good things to happen to them and we care about how they feel about what is going on. Writing that looks like a checking off the boxes is not going to do this. In real life, I worked at a company that had no black employees and then suddenlybwe had a black manager. We had no problem having a manager who was black. [We you will note had not been able to say who was hired, not even if each of us had been hired.] They hired a black manager who could not manage and he said we should organize the cigarettes we sold alphabetically instead of by how much each brand normally sold. We politely explained why this was very unlikely to work well or at all. We had 6 weeks of pure hell each time a customer tried to buy cigarettes and we had other bad events where we could not sell product and had unnecessary hassles because he rearranged successful ways of doing things. In a making fictional tv setting, just putting in a ******** character because the character is ******** does not mean adding diversity in a good way. We needed a manager who could manage or who could understand that we needed to be able to find the brand of cigarette quickly to sell cigarettes. The character should be interesting and worth the time on screen, the character should not be on the screen because they are nonwhite and non heterosexual or whatever. Yes I know saying this makes me a target to be called hateful and racist. Well, when the white make was automatically the hero this interfered with good story telling and not fixing the bias but just reversing the angle of the bias interferes with good story telling also. If every white male character is rude or not capable of coming up with a good idea or is ineffective, then the writer has not made the nonwhite look better, but has suggested that they can not compete.

@ari volden The silence exist on earth. They also exist somewhere else, and form the church of the silence. Their name is a reference to the silence that must fall before the Doctor speaks his name, which is predicted to cause the end of the universe. They propped up humanity into developing space tech to adhere to the already established timeline of the doctor being killed by a spaceman. That whole thing was already established to have happened, so everything the Silence did until that point was working to preserve the timeline so the doctor is killed. We see in one episode what happens when he isn't killed, which is that one where all of human history condenses into a single moment, which is stopped when he is "killed". However, the doctor saw this coming, and used the time-travelling shape-shifting robot to assume the appearance of his death, then fled the whole thing while alive and having preserved the timeline and broadcasted a recording of the Silence saying to kill them all. The Silence work based on unconscious suggestion, their ability to erase themselves doesn't extend to what they tell you, so they implant things. Them saying "kill us all" is basically mental programming for the entirety of humanity embedded in the moon landing recording. That clip exists in that glitch in the recording between "one small step for man" and then there's the noise, and then "one giant leap". In the end, the Silence failed their task and the doctor survived to speak his name and eventually end the universe as they knew it.

Honestly the Timeless Child thing could have worked with one tweak - have The Master be the timeless child. Not only would it kind of explain how he keeps coming back after supposedly permanent deaths, but having him be the founding father of the Time Lords would inflate his ego, push his sense of entitlement to the edge and make him incredibly bitter and angry at the Time Lords for erasing his memories and robbing him of his destiny and place in history.

Honestly, I wouldn't even agree that "the effects are good." Sure, the CGI looks pretty top-notch, but that hardly matters to me when all of the cinematography is static and boring and the color palette is some variation of grey and brown (even colorful scenes feel brown!). Every moment I see a critique video jump from the new season to an earlier rendition, it feels like a relief to my eyes--give me dodgy practical effects with proper camera work and well-executed color over this visual boredom any day of the week.

I agree with your Jodie point. I think she is quite capable of being a decent doctor but the script is not letting her do that. It is like they are relying heavily on companions in doing the job for her like reacting in the certain way to her character rather than letting her to have her own characteristic moments. Or - my theory is - they don't know how to write strong female character. It is just flat. Like they 've erased not just "timeless child personality" from her but erased all the other experience previous doctors had.

I would argue that Capaldi also got bad scripts and still did phenomenally well. A good actor will make the best of a bad script, regardless. See Ewan McGregor in the Star Wars prequels, for instance. He had a pretty flat script with (for lack of a better word) cringey dialogue, but still put a drive and emotion behind his lines that a less talented actor would not be able to achieve. Capaldi did this too, but Whittaker just doesn’t. I’ve mentioned in a few KZbin comment sections before that Jodie seems to be attempting to pull of something Tennant or Smith-esque with some of her speeches and quite blatantly not doing a good job at it. The one the sticks out to me is her speech in “It Takes You Away” (loved more and lost more). The dialogue itself seemed very reminiscent of Smith’s “Rings of Atkahen” speech but feels flat by comparison, and doesn’t have the same drive behind it, and same goes for a lot of the dialogue that is meant to be ‘powerful’. Don’t get me wrong, no hate to Whittaker; she can act well - her other performances (Broadchurch and Trust Me) have been great - but I think she lacks the quirkiness and the style to pull of the Doctor in all his/her alien epicness. I just don’t think Jodie was the right fit for this character.

I've come to the conclusion that: *Representation without good characterization, like faith without works, is dead.* It's nice to include diversity in art but you have to actually do the work and make characters *INTERESTING* . Why? Because diverse characters are still characters and deserve well-rounded writing. Diversity without the works is purely tokenism and an insult to the community they're trying to represent.

Twice Upon a Time suffered for its treatment of the First Doctor but one can easily come up with a decent headcanon as to *why* the First Doctor was saying the shit he was, whether it was because he was messing with Twelve's head or if he was only talking like that for the benefit of the WWI-era captain that was in the scene every single time the First Doctor said something sexist. Either explanation is valid. Series 11 and 12 don't have any excuses for how terrible they are. The show right now only has three very shallow redeeming qualities imo: the new police box design, the opening titles/theme music, and the Master shrinking people again. Not really enough to give it high praise, you know?

I loved Capaldi, he had some shit eps, but he did great with pure shit and absolutely was golden when he had quality. Heaven Sent is 100% my favorite episode of all Who I've seen to date... which is all of New Who, 1st Doctor, and half of 2nd. I have a lot more to watch- but as of now? That was amazing and it was pretty much Capaldi talking to himself and walls with only a handful of exceptions. That said I refuse to accept the stupid Timeless Child shit, and my brain will reject any mention of that, or any story line around that until it's over, done, and never mentioned again... Hartnell was the first Doctor, Doctor Who would never have lasted if he, and Troughton, weren't so God damn amazing. I love Hartnell, he starts off as a total arrogant asshole who slowly starts becoming a better person due to his first companions that he totally kidnapped against their wills at the start. I thought I found Clara telling him what TARDIS to take offensive to him, and stripping him of his incarnation's importance to the series... I nearly had a stroke with the Timeless Child reveal.

Darren Smith I thought Moffat was great with a doctor for a couple of seasons but like we saw with Sherlock he starts to run out of ideas. For 11 seasons 5 and 6 were really good (especialy 5) but for the most part series 7 was pretty poor except for angle take Manhattan. Then series 8 and 9 were amazing, but 10 just didn’t hold up to them.

i completely agree! plus cass was shown to be a deaf woman who was ALSO in charge and clever and compassionate. the blind girl didn't have any character at all (to the point where we don't even remember her name because her character can be boiled down to "blind girl"). it's okay to have characters who need more help than others but even then, nightmare in silver had a blind character, ada, who did need to learn to stand up for herself and needed more help than other characters but STILL had character traits apart from being blind and actually made decisions that moved the plot forward because she was treated like an actual character, not just a token blind girl.

One of my main problems is that there's basically no dynamic between 13 and her companions, with basically all of the previous companions since the 9th Doctor, as early as the second adventure they would notice some fundamentally shitty quality The Doctor has and the two of them would work through it and prompt character development from each other that stretches over the whole season. Thirteen's keeps her companions at arms length and constantly lectures them, qualities that prior companions would have ripped her to shreds for, but Ryan, Graham and Yas just don't have any sort of read on her and don't call her out on either so she's never developed beyond her starting point. And I agree with Jay that the Doctor's age old wisdom and air of authority is not present most of the time, so we're left with a Doctor with not a lot of depth. Also yeah Kerblam and Orphan 55 were pretty low moments for the character, where they accidentally write her as pro-capitalism and placing responsibility for global warming on the common folk, with maybe one line of dialogue about how the rich absolve themselves of their responsibilities and ninety lines of dialogue where The Doctor says "WE can change global warming if WE make changes" as if the blame should be shared with the common people in any way.

Well, when your selling point is "Look the new doctor is a woman and she is just as good as any man, in fact she is probably even better" Then it automatically makes you more inclined to write the character as if they have no flaws and make no one question her. Because (this is sarcasm btw) your characters have to fully support the doctor in order to prove to people that the female doctor is JUST AS AWESOME as you were "telling" people they were. Because telling people someone is awesome is way more effective than showing them being awesome and besides who needs CONFLICT in stories anyways? This is my main reason for not liking politically correct or agenda motivated changes to things because it starts at a basic premise that makes creators more inclined to write their stories in a way that holds back on conflict against their character in order to prove that they were right about whatever change being a good thing and they end up protecting the character when the whole point of a character is throwing them into trouble and seeing how they can handle themselves in difficult situations and how they struggle. In fact, having 3 companions was a perfect opportunity to do this by introducing completely different perspectives that could have caused the doctor to get more challenged about how they do things and for people to create more conflict BECAUSE there is so much diversity in the characters. Instead it used it as a way for her to have more people on her side saying that she is always right so that she DOESN'T get challenged. Which is why we now have 3 characters who all the serve the same purpose and are all pretty much same character.

Watch-Mojo is a g-damn-flippidy-damn Shame. They argue that Doctor Who is now more awesome than ever and that makes them all cringe. And on a closely related note: 'Sherlock is Epic' also makes me cringe HARD. ...I strongly recommend people to watch the Sherlock-Docu of 'Hbomberguy', a really good KZbinr. His Video about Sherlock are based on objective facts and he provides logic and/or sources. He sadly goes too much into Moffat as a Creator, so the first Half of the Video is rather non-sherlock-related, but very fortunately: It does no harm (even does good) if you just skip the first Half and get right into it. I recommend it MUCH. Sorry for the long comment!

So as someone who is dyspraxic, I was really excited for Ryan... and then was immediately unexcited again. His learning difficulty is just another thing he HAS, not a thing he IS, and it's painful to watch because this isn't representation. Filling a show with characters that allow you to check boxes about things people have without those things informing the character at all gives off the totally wrong message, it actually trivialises serious issues that have a real effect on peoples' lives.

Social commentary. In season 2, where we follow the tenth doctor. Theres an ep where the doctor and Rose need to stop a TV from stealing peoples faces. (GrOuNDeD) anyway, in that episode, they meet a family with a controlling father who dictates what everyone does and follows the stereotype of "the man of the house" and clearly has a massive ego. They basically call the man out for being a horrible person and give the woman and child support while also helping with their grandma who had her face stolen. The father calls the authorities and have the grandma taken away, which pushes the family to turn entirely against the man. By the end, the woman builds up the courage to divorce him and kick him out. It could have ended here and been as simplistic as "Abuse is bad" . But not only do they not end it there, go one step further. See from what I've told you so far, I've purposely left out several key details. The man was a war veteran who fought in the second world war. His ego had misled him, because he fought in that war to end stop fascism but due to his ego became what he fought against. By the end, he had realised his mistakes too late, clearly regretting what he had done. The world was changing, and he was stuck in the past. When he's leaving, the doctor and Rose approach the kid to watch him leave. The kid appears ready to leave him in the dust, and amazingly, the doctor asks "That's it then new monarch, new age and new world, no room for someone like him." the kid replies "Yes". Rose then states "Go after him, he's your dad" the kid replies "He's an idiot" and then Rose replies "Of course he is, he's your dad. But you are clever. Clever enough to save the world so don't stop their, go on." and with that, the kid runs after him, walking beside him as he left and even carrying his suitcase for him. The social commentary here didn't just end at "facism and abuse is bad" but gave a more nuicanced approach giving the message that just because they are the way they are, doesn't mean that they can't change, nor does it mean we can't be better and do better. Instead of blanket slating everyone as hateful, instead saying they people can make mistakes, and that doesnt mean we can't change them for the better. This one episode did social commentary better than the entirety of season 12

So I behemently disagree with you. I feel the ending gave a more nuanced approach to the entire ordeal

@@Wraithfighter Oh I totally agree. Plus, this was in the worst of the areas. I mean, when we've had past episodes, no one has been secretive about clothing or race as a factor. Time travel fiction always has this stuff because history hasn't been great to a lot of groups. The Witchfinder episode is a decent one in particular... until they made the villain turn out to be possessed. It's like when Pose gets heavy handed, we're like "of course this is going to be happening. This is the height of the Aids crisis and bad stuff was allowed to happen." It's an issue we have with subtlety in that we think it's the go-to for themes. It works a lot of the time but sometimes you need to bring it down like a hammer.

@@Wraithfighter I'd ask if it's juxtaposed against anything, or if the story takes place entirely within that historical period (not even strictly for this show/episode, just when approaching this premise) with no particular focus on a different era or context. Like, if the idea was to parallel them ("Here is a segregation practice done in the 60's you think is absurd. Now here is one still being done in present to show how terrible things are" as one basic use), I would get it because the sudden contrast and disbelief it can evoke in a contemporary audience is being used for a narrative purpose. If the story drops you into an era like the 1800's or the 1900's Segregation era or such, and ONLY focuses the story in there, then the most it's good for is teaching the history rather than conveying a message to a current era audience lacking the perspective that this was inherently "normal" for the time. I assume the Doctor and such would be the out-of-time element in this case, but they also need to react through the lens of someone who has seen multiple era rather than just being appalled by this one but not drawing any comparisons, realizations of change or lack thereof, or demonstrated understanding of the eras as someone outside of both.

You can show historically accurate depictions of outright racism, but it won't do any good if your message boils down to "See this? This was bad!". Like, yeah, we know. What are we supposed to do about it? It would be a far more valuable approach to delve into the ugly underbelly of structural racism that is still prevalent today, so we can learn something that is relevant and applicable to our modern lives. But that would require that the writers understand these problems themselves and have the talent to weave them into a story.

The problem with Rosa is it exists to show prejudice. Not explore it. There's one simple fix you could do to make it a good episode. Rather than having Krasko be a flat, one-note, racist chatacter - have him be a descendant of the bus driver. Make it so he was persecuted in the future because of his ancestors actions against Rosa Parks. The reason he wants to stop Rosa Parks isn't because he's a racist, but because he just doesn't want him or his family to be persecuted in the future because of what his ancestor did. Then after the Doctor stops him, she can help him and his family in the future. With that one simple fix, the episode actually explores prejudice rather than existing to just show a filtered version of it. Rosa lacked serious ambition.

Asain I’ll amend myself and say that show-canon wise, it’s been referenced since the early 2010s in the show (the Doctor thinking he regenerated into a woman in 2010, the mention of the Corsair having both male and female regenerations in 2011 (and that’s still 9 years of canon to go off of, which for some shows is monumental)). But while searching the question of “when was it first established that Time Lords could become Time Ladies and vice verse,” I found that back in the ‘80s, they were considering following up Tom Baker with a female Doctor. So this isn’t a brand new concept to the show by a factor of 40 years.

In all fairness, it's mentioned a few times the Doctor's subconscious plays a huge role in the form he regenerates into. He was struggling with getting old and lonely, so kept regenerating into hip young wacky dudes and taking out young girls. Then he kind of got hit with a bout of depression realizing he was doing that and turned into a crotchety old man, and why is he SCOTTISH! I may have stopped watching like 3 episodes in, but I doubt they ever fully explored why his subconscious chose that form. And it's not like they never explored time lords changing gender, just look at Missy! Which was entirely explained due to the Master's absolute obsession with the Doctor resulting in a female form to literally try to hit on him.

I think having a female Doctor was actually a really good idea. It’s been foreshadowed, such as when the 11th Doctor felt his longer hair and said “I’m a girl!!” But it feels like the Doctor’s a woman for the sake of being a woman, and they decided they didn’t need to add any nuance to her character, or really to her companions. If they had complex feelings and motivations like the other Doctors she probably could have been awesome.

What quite annoys me about new who as a whole is that while it's "diverse". It isn't diverse in a space time scale. Why not alien companions, or companions from the past or future. I think this style of companion would be very interesting, like a companion from the past discovering the present, or the from the future discovering the present. Even more interesting would be an alien companion discovering Earth. I think alot of the companions are awesome in new who, but the fact we've gone 12 seasons into new-who without this idea explored bothers me. Also the fact that we got so close with Victorian clara, captain Jack or nardole, who weren't traditional companions but also didn't have their unique identities explored to make for more interesting characters and stories

I really don't like how they portrayed a woman as the doctor... I mean her quirkiness stems from having a very nervous personality it doesn't stem from this charming personality the other doctors have. This kind of being charming was (bc the doctors were men) a really manly feature. So it would have been nice to give her this charming feature not as a man but as a woman and make it hers. But no they only gave her a nervous socially awkward personality (which can also be an annoying stereotype for women) instead of all those things we love about the doctor. Also another stereotype: the other doctors as men did most of the time own the situation and made it at least seem like they were in control. And on a closely related note: 'Sherlock is Epic' also makes me cringe HARD. I cant believe even after the laughable Season 4 that woke so many people up, people still genuinly have the Delusion that Sherlock was Epic. I strongly recommend people to watch the Sherlock-Docu of 'Hbomberguy', a really good KZbinr. His Video about Sherlock are based on objective facts and he provides logic and/or sources. He sadly goes too much into Moffat as a Creator, so the first Half of the Video is rather non-sherlock-related, but very fortunately: It does no harm (even does good) if you just skip the first Half and get right into it. There are 3 problems I have about the new series The main problem with Jodie's Doctor (which isnt her fault btw) is that she hasn't got anything to define her except from being "the female doctor". 9, 10, 11 and 12 each had something to define their traits and quirks by. But 13 is stuck in a constant state of "I'm the woman one", hopefully that will change soon 🤞 The other problem being is, is that a lot of the real life issues they bring up - like racial and sexual discrimination - have been done before and done in a much better way. Tale 12's speech about human progress, that it's about the price you put on a life. Series 11 and 12 have these but do them so much worse, because the stories in general are kind of dull. The thing that made DW so interesting WAS it's over arcing storylines Finally (which is kinda my own little nitpick) the characters barely develope. I'll be honest, aside from Gary, the cast is really boring to watch, which the writers really need to work on making them interesting

@@andrewphillips8341 Must respectfully disagree here. Other actors playing Dr Who have worked with bad scripts and with seasons that did not set up good characterization. I think the actress is good but has little to work with in the script. We were told that she dislikes a lack of fair play and when she sees something wrong that she sometimes just has to jump in and fix it, then this heavily hammered point is just dropped, just dropped. The doctor seems callous and at best distracted, if we take a charitable read on what we have been shown. This is the result of dragging the characters into the scene which has the predetermined arranged outcome, and into the next cool looking scene and not letting the characteristics of the characters in part drive the plotline. Jazz wants to be a.lowee to do tasks she can do but is not a white make and faces discrimination and also faces family pressure, and we get a big lead up that this is important and then largely nothing comes of this build up.

"the fury of a time lord", "the oncoming storm". where in jodies performances is that? she really really cannot act intimidating like the doctor should be when needed. she just falls completely flat. she hasnt got the acting skill to pull a huge role like this off. shes just bounces around, doesnt stop talking acting all childish which is fine now and again but its fucking constant, thats all there is (even matt smith who was a very childish doctor could still be intimidating when he needed to be) chibnall is a shite sci-fi writer and yes she hasnt been given anything good to work with but the problem does lie with her as well. she just cant do it. not saying a female couldnt play the Dr (michelle gomez was a really good master) if we had someone like michelle gomez playing the Dr then that would be half the battle won. peter capaldi had some absolute shite episodes in his era but he could still play the doctor perfectly. big rant i know but in my opinion she just cant hack it, shes not talented enough.

I watched it a while ago and had opinion that Jody is an "ok" Doctor, but everything else is just meh. After about year since I watched it I cannot recall any episode or scene that would especially stick to my memory. I cannot reacall names of any companion or villain. The most distinct thing I remember is "RACISM! BAD!" and fact that dude with serious ballance problems keeps forgetting he is supposed to have ballance problems. I am currently rewatching modern Doctor with my wife, and we reached last season of Capaldi.

Yeah she was the first blind actress but i don't see why that makes it good when for example this was done much better in destiny of the daleks when they hired a death actor and you can see tom tapping him on the shoulder so he knew when to come in which was really nice

I watched every single season of 2005+ doctor who before the 13th doctor, and loved it. I watched the 13th doctor’s debut and immediately got bored. About half a year later I watched a few other episodes, I hated them and haven’t touched modern doctor who since. I can watch every other season of the show and love it, but the second I touch season 11 I find myself falling asleep. What were they even thinking?

Agreed, I have watched since I was 12, seeing the 2005 reboot at least 5 times over now and I can’t even get past the second episode of season 11.. definitely might try visiting the classics if I can find them after Netflix took them off

I used to be so excited about the new season of Doctor Who and was determined to give Jodie a chance. But her first episode I kept watching the clock to see how much time was left because I was so bored, and through season 11 it just never felt like Doctor Who.

I agree with what you said about Jodie. Look at the actors who got it right like Matt Smith. Unlike David Tennant and Peter Capaldi, who had been fans of the series since childhood, he wasn't very familiar with it, but he took the time to watch previous doctors, and he took a lot from that. You can see that he just gets it. He can go from being silly and eccentric to serious in a second, and you see the old man he really is behind his youthful appearance. He particularly liked Patrick Troughton, and his portrayal influenced both Matt Smith's performance and his costume as Matt rejected the various costumes shown to him and thought his doctor should look less cool. He actually suggested the bow tie himself. Although offered the chance, Jodie apparently didn't watch previous Doctor's, and it shows. That coupled with writers who who were also not familiar with the show and you get season 11.

Just gonna bring it up. Not disagreeing with this point AT ALL, but Chris Chibnal was part of the DW appreciation society in the 80s and ripped on the Trial of A Timelord in 86 for being too dull, generic and bland with cliche monsters and lots of running down hallways. Now, say what you will about Trial 86, the irony is insane. Now to his credit, Chris did actually adress that clip recently and said he was just a silly teen at the time, and the fact he didn't ignore it is admirable, but the irony is still there for certain.

Chibnall told Jodie "don't watch anything with the doctor in it", and Moffat didn't do that with Matt Smith, and it shows. Smith can go from eccentric time traveler to super serious ancient alien in an INSTANT and it feels realistic
