The amount of "Joseph was a simp for raising another man's baby" takes on this story nowadays are unreal. You have to remember that in the context of the story, Mary had no say in the matter. She was just a kid and she was scared. Joseph was progressive for the time in the way that he put caring for her over his pride, and raised Jesus as his own. She and Jesus would not have survived in that day and age without his love.

He constantly was going the the store to buy things to try and find something I could keep down. I remember breaking down in tears on more than one occasion and telling him "I can't do this" and he held me and told me I could do it. With Keisha's characterization, it seemed to me they did try to portray a realistic image of a teenage girl having to grow up in that time period and culture. She starts off the movie playing with the other children, and her first transition into adulthood is unpleasant to be sure (having to witness a neighbor girl being sold to pay her parent's taxes and later being herself betrothed to avoid a similar fate). However, (with Joseph's help) she seems to have embraced adulthood by the end of the film, both its sorrows and its joys. To some degree, I think the filmmakers and actress might have felt constrained by the expectations of the role, because Mary is usually portrayed as a picture of serenity or with subdued emotions in religious contexts.
@krystencabbage1032
@krystencabbage1032 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, coming from a Catholic background, I’ve found they take the belief of “she was born without sin and committed no sin so she could be a perfect vessel for god” to imply she had no emotions at all. You can be a good person and still be scared/angry/sad, just because you don’t sin doesn’t mean you don’t get to express yourself.

I'm half agnostic but god, I love this thread. The problem with Christianity, Catholicism to be specific is that they portray Mary as a goddess when she was just a human. Upright hypocrisy. I like the take of the commenter above where she was just a teenage girl- scared but still she trusts God. That's indeed holier than being "sinless"
@brigidtheirish
@brigidtheirish 3 жыл бұрын
@@klawis I'm Catholic, and we don't. A lot of Protestant denominations *think* we do, but we very much *don't* worship Mary as a goddess. Yes, we believe she was born without the taint of Original Sin, but that was God shielding her so she could become a vessel for The Word Made Flesh. She still could have chosen to sin, just as our First Parents did, but she didn't. She's the new Ark of the Covenant, the new Eve (who got it right this time), and mother of Our Lord. As we are adopted children of God, that makes her our mother, as well, so we honor her in that capacity.

I love how they can be so open and honest about their faith, without excluding or insulting anyone. If everyone was so kind, we wouldn't be having all these recurring debates about "free speech" vs "the war on Christmas". Also Alan's disdain for the film's cinematography is hilarious... I know lots of Christians who eat up Christian films just because they're Christian, but I also know some who share Alan's higher standards XD
@rockyblacksmith
@rockyblacksmith 3 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of the issues like the BS "war on Christmas" are a byproduct of the fact that America has such a large percentage of practicing christians. At least, I don't see those kind of debates happening where I live (as a practicing christian in a society where christianity is largely in-name-only). In America, religious topics are politicised, because there is political gain in doing so. And whatever becomes political also becomes partisan, and quickly full-on toxic. And a similar thing happens with movies marketed towards christians; They don't really need to be good, since the movie makers already have a captive audience.

@@rockyblacksmith I actually think the “war on Christmas” started out as a good, normal thing that quickly spiraled out of control. There were areas for a time where I wasn’t allowed to mention Christmas or say Merry Christmas to others, even to people who celebrated Christmas too! So there really was a huge cancel culture on Christmas for awhile, and I believe that was very politically charged (I also believe this idea started out as a normal argument against Christmas that quickly spiraled out of control for the same reason I’m about to list for the “war on Christmas”). So of course people fought back. Why shouldn’t people be allowed to celebrate their holiday outside their homes? It like telling someone they can’t be Muslim or Christian or whatever outside of their homes. But then the argument became political, and everything went down from there. I honestly believe people, companies, whatever should be allowed to publically express celebration for whatever, whether it be Christmas, Hanukkah, and even the June Pride month stuff. If people feel offended by it and stop buying from your store, oh well, that’s your choice and theirs too. Let people wish others a Happy Holidays or a Merry Christmas. Luckily we’ve moved away from the insanity that was “don’t say Christmas” and just let people celebrate it. It is sad to not see as many businesses celebrate Christmas openly anymore, but I hope it opens room for other December holidays to be celebrated. I love walking into stores decorated for Hanukkah and getting to ask about the holiday. People shouldn’t feel forced to abide by politically correct rules, but we also shouldn’t force traditions on others. In the wise words of the Beatles, Just let it be!

Same - I can get WAY into religious stories if they delve into the power and emotion of such big, high-stakes setups. Jesus Christ Superstar is a good example, with Jesus having to reckon with what it really means to be tortured and sacrificed. Prince of Egypt is another great one that's as much about the relationship between Moses and Ramses as any other aspect. That's how you make a religious movie good, is by making a good movie.

I love The Chosen for that very reason. I am a Christian but was very wary of the show when I first heard of it because to be honest, a lot of Christian movies and shows suck. But when I finished the first episode I was near tears. The characters are human, they have issues, fears, hopes, dreams, and insecurities. They get angry, they laugh, they cry, they make mistakes. It is beautiful. Also, as a bonus, the Jewish characters are actually middle eastern, the Roman's are white, and they have other characters who are black and Asian which makes sense when you consider that Isreal is kind of a crossroads.

@@Mockingdragon Off topic, but your choise of words ("what it really means to be tortured and sacrificed") made me understand why Christ would never want anyone to experience that ever again - and why people would be able to use his death to plead to God. ("In you son's name, spare us") As someone who used to be bullied, the experience makes me even kinder and more passionate about justice. If I could be the last person to ever experience it, I'd love that. Jesus' suffering didn't remove all other suffering from the world but it might have made him and God more compassionate. Until now I've found the rhetoric of gratefulness for someone's suffering kind of weird and twisted. Nobody's suffering can ever be a good thing. But the things that come after can be. Good things can arise from the bad. (I probably cracked "the problem of suffering" as well.)

"The story is, well you know the story, everybody knows the Nativity story!" Yeah, man, I thought so too, but that's so much less true than I thought! Last December at the office Christmas party, I ended up telling ALL the best Bible stories to my co-workers because they knew none of them. Two are first generation Chinese immigrants, one is a white guy who came from a "militantly atheist household" (his words, not mine) and one just said his family wasn't religious and he just never really ended up learning these stories. It all started because we were playing Cards Against Humanity and one of the black cards was basically like "And Moses called down a plague of [blank] on the Egyptians" or something to that effect. And it turned out that I was the only person in that group who understood the reference the card was making. So I ended up giving a rather hilarious summarized storytelling performance of the story of Exodus to them, and they were like "Okay you're a good storyteller and I didn't know that Bible stories were this entertaining!" and I admitted that that was probably the best one, but then we ended up abandoning the CoH game (which was probably for the best because one of my ESL coworkers ended up asking questions like "What's bukake?" and nobody wanted to deal with that, lol) so I could tell comically summarized versions of my favourite Christmas tales XD

As an agnostic lover of history, historiography, roman history (which includes early Christianity) and above all movies, I find that often the ''Religious'' movies are more about propaganda than storytelling. (Might help that I am from a Christian country, but not from the US.) Oftentimes the less preachy ones end up being the better ones, and I hope the more effective ones to convey faith. The Prince of Egypt, Silence, Last Temptation of the Christ, Ten Commandments, Ben Hur and Life of Brian are TERRIFFIC movies about that! What is strange about some of those movies is that they were often attacked as ''Left Wing Hollywood'' propaganda against religion, but they are pretty profound explorations of faith, and often times created by DEEPLY religious people. The message of (most religions) is about ''Life is hard already, how can we not be dicks to each others in that meantime'', so Jesus is a pretty good messenger for that!

You guys have talked about "nice guys" and the toxicity that comes with believing you deserve someone else's love a couple times now, and it is an incredibly important message that has helped me reflect on myself and my own past actions. I would also like to hear you guys talk about the other side to this coin: how does one overcome the hurdle and realize that they are not, in fact, owed the love of another? And more importantly, how should they deal with the overwhelming emotions of finding out their love is not reciprocated, and cope with the realization that it never will be? Then as an after thought, how can someone best deal with such a situation so as to possibly harbor a healthy friendship, specifically one where both people feel fulfilled emotionally from it? I ask this because I am good friends with several people that I have wanted to be in a relationship with, and it is incredibly painful to hold back on expressing my true feelings since I know it would make them uncomfortable, so I wonder if there are any better ways to cope with this, or a better perspective I should be seeing it from.

I think if they did Thorin, they should also look at Thranduil as well since they’re essentially two sides of the same coin imo.

What I loved the most about this video is the inclusive language. Not implying that only cis woman can be pregnant, and by saying that although Alan (I'm sorry, Jonathan, I'm not sure of your believes and don't want to offend by assuming) is strongly Christian, you have no issues with other religions and cultures and what they celebrate during the season. It's so nice.

Thank you for this. This is Jonathan and I appreciate your not assuming. I am Christian, in that I try to live the teachings of Jesus, but I'm not super on board with how some Christians act. Alan and I both belief that loving others requires respect for their perspective and traditions :) And yeah, the non-gendered language was intentional. Thank you so much for watching!

I really like Joseph. Here he was, about to be married, and he found his bride to be was pregnant and *not* by him. Legally, he could've had her stoned and publicly shamed. Instead he decided to quietly divorce her to spare everyone a lot of fuss until God explained the circumstances and said that it's okay to go through with the marriage. So here he is, likely much older than Mary, not only taking care of her but later *fleeing the country* with this little family to protect a child who isn't his. There's a reason he's the patron saint of fathers. Also, can't particularly blame Alan for his attitude toward religious movies. Most of them tend to be schmaltzy, preachy, and generally not fun. (Kinda like the religious fiction *books* Mom keeps trying to get me to read.) On defending your wife during pregnancy (and in marriage in general), well, with my parents, Mom was sick pretty much constantly for the first decade or so of their marriage. Longer, really, but it took about ten years to figure out what was wrong. There wasn't a whole lot Dad could actually *do* to support and defend her. He's hopeless at most domestic chores and isn't much better at emotional support (he tries, but it's a bit like getting a pat on the head from clumsy bear). But he did keep taking her to clinics and hospitals with quacks who dismissed the obvious signs that she was *dying,* resisted the urge to murder every last one of them, and finally found a doctor with an actual brain. So, kinda defense from outside people? Because the doctors would've just let her slowly waste away if he didn't have the combined stubbornness of Ireland and Norway. What my dad *was* good at was being devoted. Sickeningly devoted. Annoyingly devoted. Calling-her-beautiful-when-she's-bent-over-the-toilet-with-vomit-in-her-hair-and-wanting-to-kill-him devoted. He was so *excited* during all the births and amazed at each of us like he'd never seen a baby before. He gave baths, changed diapers (how many men are willing to do that?), and probably would've fed us if we didn't have to be attached to Mom for that. (Apparently trying to pump milk out for later use was incredibly painful.) He failed spectacularly at anything that required *quiet,* but he tried.

@@gracehaven5459 Well, with Dad, it was less that and more a set of mental health issues that wouldn't be diagnosed for a couple more decades. Including Aspergers and PTSD. Mom's doing better, which, admittedly, isn't saying much. She still gets sick easily and has some less-than-ideal coping mechanisms likely stemming from her own mental health issues and upbringing (Grandma was a saintly woman, but agoraphobia is going to negatively affect everyone around you). Man, now that I think about it, it's kinda amazing anyone in my family is *functional.*

Jonathan, the music you mentioned was a huge draw for me! I get why Alan and others dislike the disjointedness of the overall plot, but I chose to go into this movie to see how the story was told on the whole, and I was pleased with the outcome. It’s not cinema gold, but it’s a beautiful representation of the Joseph and Mary we never really ever saw, but knew somehow existed. Unrelated but sort of; a song that always went hand in hand for me with this movie is Joseph’s Lullaby by the group MercyMe.

I get that it is problematic, but I think I love it because it was the first time a saw a movie that showed different kinds of love as equally valid: parent to child, old friends, new romance, fracturing marriage, unrequited, ect. What stuck with me was the message that my life didn't have to look like a typical 90s RomCom to have love in it. It was kinda validating. There are a lot of better examples of that, now, but, at the time...in a major Hollywood movie people actually saw... I think I'm willing to overlook the flaws because of that emotional attachment, but I'd be interested in their take.

My husband and I have discussed this show many times. Baby showers for moms, gifts for the mom to be and the father is left to the side as if his job isn't just as important. More older, experienced fathers need to reach out to "soon to be" fathers and teach them, share their lessons and how to's 💕

It shows how past trauma can hinder your goals and relationships, and the true difficulty that comes with forgiving someone of childhood trauma. It doesn’t have an overstated message, it realistically portrays the double life of going to church a Christian and coming to a broken home a broken man - I think you’d both love it!

I like the first two seasons and the first three episodes of season three. Unfortunately, I had to stop after episode six because *spoiler warning* The previous episode opened with a pretty graphic scene of Peter’s wife having a miscarriage, which really upset me since someone close to me lost her baby. I tried to give it another chance, but then Peter picked a fight with Eden and then tried to play the victim right after she told him about the miscarriage. I actually had nightmares about it, I’m not exaggerating. That’s when I knew I couldn’t continue with the show.

My husband and I had a surprise baby literally nine and a half months after starting to date. 😅 I had been told previously by my Dr that I could not get pregnant anymore due to a severe injury, so our baby girl was a HUGE surprise. I was sure he was gonna leave me. I asked him to meet me at the park after we got off work and had my mom watch my older two children (he hadn't even met them yet - I found out we were expecting at 12 weeks along because I was getting sick at work). His response was silence. I waited for him to storm off, to start yelling, to accuse me of lying to him, but all he did was sit there and hold me. Finally, he took the *biggest* sigh I think I have ever heard and said, "well, I guess I'm not getting that new car." And that was it. Three years later, we have had another baby (so my old Dr should probably seek a new profession), and he has been with me through so so much. He is 100% committed to our family, including my older two girls, who did not have a father figure before he came along. He is so gentle and supportive; there are many days I don't feel like I deserve him. Thank you for reminding me of exactly what caused me to fall so deeply love with him in the beginning. He is my Joseph.
