I'll never get tired of old school practical, in-camera stuff. Someone like myself, for whatever reason, likes to keep things easy and practical ON-CAMERA rather than attempt too many CGI stuff in post I may not have all the skills or tools to pull off. I like a good balance of in-camera and POST, and maybe someday I'll figure out UNREAL!

Really looking forward to see what you come up with with Unreal! I feel like the community is really starting to get ahold of this new wave of 3D (Specifically Virtual environment) content that just became incredibly accessible due to the recent updates with Programs like UE5 and Blender these last 2 years or so. It's definitely reminiscent of when DSLRs started to become a feasible thing for the everyday person.

Hey Ryan, have you tried using a black screen instead of a white one. Usually black screens are used when you are projecting in a bright room. A black screen should help with the low contrast ratio and help to correct washouts, giving you better image saturation. Might be worth a try. Great episode! I'm trying to get hold of a projector for my next film to do something similar. Any suggestions on a lower budget projector than this one?

I think my problem with this footage is the focal length/depth of field doesn’t exactly match between the fore and background, as well as the fact that you don’t get any parallax on the background when you move the camera. Super cool idea though, that shot of you using the projector to achieve a car shot actually got me really excited.
@SanczykLucas
@SanczykLucas 2 жыл бұрын
To combat the low contrast background...Maybe using a big soft led panel really really close to the subject just outside the frame but with a really really low power output could help? The inverse square law would mean that the light reaching the screen will be almost negligible but would really impact the blacks on the subject. And then of course correcting the lifted blacks in the entire image in post. Maybe making a LUT to previsualize correctly. I supose it could work pretty well on mediums or closer. Not so sure in wider shots when the distance become similar. Just and idea...

Nice informative video. (You might try a glass bead screem - as used in those chromakey that had the green LEDs around the lens to project forward. They are unltra directional, and should "reject" lighting from the side that lights the talent) I =AM= going to take you to task on one point: You are using FRONT projection, not rear projection. For the latter, the projector has to be BEHIND a translucent screen so that the projector beam is on the same axis as the lens

Now this is going to be interesting. The capability of a near perfect-replica to ILMs 3D tracking workflow. This will help Indie Filmmakers make their films on the cheep. There is one thing that needs to be tested: Instead of a flat screen, what about a curved screen so you can move the camera without running the risk of getting the screen corners?

Hi, I noticed some synch scan lines no your Jurassic Park footage... and I'm trying to use the same projector for a shoot and I can't get rid of the synch scan lines... but you see to have sorted that out, as the rest of your footage looks fine. Any tips on how you managed to get rid of it? I've tried adjusting shutter speed, confirmed my camera was in NTC mode, but I still can see the scan line in my footage. They vary in width and speed depending no shutter speed, but even in 1/30 shutter speed, the get wider and move very slowly, but I can still see them... 😣 Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you for sharing such inspiring videos!!!

@@filmriot thank you so much for your reply! We’ve been going crazy trying to fix the issue on a Sony A7C and a Sony a6400, with no success… 🙈 We then decided to fire up our old GH5, 180* shutter angle and our problems seemed to have disappeared!! Then we tried an Olympus OM-1, also no issues with shutters at both 1/60 and 1/30!! No idea what’s going on with the Sony, but they are unusable in this scenario… 🤷‍♂️ (Our cameras are PAL, but we set them to NTSC. Could it be that even in NTSC the sensor is not capable of doing true 30fps?! 🤔) Thank you again for replying! ; )~

There's actually a very specific type of screen for these ultra short-throw laser units that is a "must have" for any sort of ambient light use, that's what he referred to in the video.
@daniel_wilkinson
@daniel_wilkinson 2 жыл бұрын
Speaking about the light spill on the screen... am I missing something, or could you not put the talent farther in front of the screen and/or maybe use barn doors on the lights? I mean, it wouldn't cure it completely, under all circumstances, and available space would limit a lot of things, I know. Oh. There's the reflected light from the action out front to consider. Hmmm...
@theshadow8188
@theshadow8188 2 жыл бұрын
I’ll do you one better. Use the projector is a rear protector to get the light bounce off onto the actor with minor adjustments well above and side lighting (the sun/ ambient light) and because you have the image/ video for the projector comp out the actor from the rear projection and comp the actor back into the source image/footage. This will give you more control over the crisp image quality later in post in addition to cementing the actor with actual light bounce and saturation from the background without sacrificing image quality for the background. I think you guys should give it a solid attempt. Could be cool.
