These old Westerns sure do bring back memories. How the times and movies have changed. While indoor theaters and now large screen TV's have made movie viewing a more comfortable and less rainy experience, part of me misses those weekend drive-ins when we piled into the back of pickup trucks and brought along a small grill, lawn chairs and a cooler. @Duketributechannel9 күн бұрын
This good film was shot in 1968 largely in Brackettville, Texas on the set built 9 years earlier for the legendary "The Alamo" starring and directed by John Wayne. You can recognize the sheriff's office, the prison, the hotel, the church with the white turret beyond the clearing where the gallows are mounted, the bank and other buildings. The last part is filmed a few hundred meters away where the strenuous defense of the Alamo defenders took place, you can sense the places and the Alamo mission appears hidden by decorative additions and you can glimpse the gray door of the same where John Wayne was hit with a spear shortly before dying by blowing up the explosives depot. The Alamo set was used in many other productions and became a place open to tourists and visitors until 2009 when the last people of Happy Shahan's family died. He was the owner of the ranch that allowed the Duke to build the set from zero. As far as I know, in 2010 a screening of Wayne's film was organized inside the set, then nothing. No buyers subsequently, an auction of the artefacts and objects for fans was organized years later and now unfortunately the location is slowly but surely decaying into abandonment. A real shame as it is a piece of cinema history visited for more than forty years by hundreds of thousands of fans.

I ran across an interesting bit of trivia in IMDB. One of the sheriff's men in the posse was (later in life) NFL head coach/defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. I tried to place him in the movie but he would have been pretty young then. But he was one of the two men killed by the bandits, when George Kennedy noticed two men missing, his deputy even says "Wade Phillips is missing too" at timestamp 1:04:44 . As a Bronco fan I thought it was worth mentioning. Great movie though, like people say, they don't make 'em like this anymore.

Funny thing, when I was a kid in the late 60s /early 70s, I had a hand crafted holster that my grandfather made for my’six gun’. Kept it oiled like he told me, and I was the fastest draw in my neighborhood. Grandpa and Jimmy Stewart had several similarities, tall , thin, same way of talking slowly and precise. Growing up with grandpa and watching Jimmy in his movies, I always felt I’d had a good education on how to do things right in life, even though I’ve strayed at times.

While mine was not made by my parents, I remember my first Western style belt/holster combo from my teens in that era. It was a hand-tooled brown belt with 24 bullet loops (22 LR) with a tooled drop holster for my Ruger Single Six. It cost a whopping $10 from a man who made trips to old Mexico and brought back pickup truck loads of various handmade leather goods, even saddles. I still have that old rig, but it has been many decades since I was slim enough to wear that old friend.
