According to Wiki, "The film [DEATH OF A GUNFIGHTER] began under the direction of Robert Totten, an experienced television director. After clashes with star Widmark, and almost a year of work, he was dropped and replaced by Don Siegel, When the film was finished Siegel did not want his name to replace Totten's. Widmark protested and an agreement was made with the Directors Guild of America for the pseudonym Alan Smithee to be used". This is a direct quote. What it doesn't go into is that it was made in 1968, the year of yet another assassination. IMO, the producer simply used a western genre to convey a radical point. Those were radical times.

It should have been called the "Death of a Town Marshall", not a Gunslinger. I liked Richard Widmark, but this western film didn't make a lot of sense. I was hoping a real gunslinger would show up in town, and they would regret firing him, and beg him to take his job back.
