The "perfect preservation" was the good old story of the Levites/Nazarenes about their Torah. When 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, the Nazarene Commander of the Faithful, signed the treaty with the Christian Patriarch Sofronius for Jerusalem, 'Umar took his oath on the Torah. This is recorded by the 1slamic historians! The "Mus1ims" before the Abbasids were Nazarenes. So, while mentioning the "perfect preservation", those Nazarenes were not at all talking about the qur-an (lit. chants). They were only talking about the Torah. The putting together of the qur-an in the form of a book would have happened only after the Abbasids assumed power. Several chapters (e.g. 53, 85, 113, 114) are not Nazarene in nature!

As an example the verses prior to your quoted verse in summary are the following. 5:44 Prophets, rabbis and scholars made judgement on Jews using the Torah. 5:45 example "a life for a life", "an eye for and eye" etc 5:46 Jesus in the footsteps of the prophets confirm the Torah where the gospel also confirm the Torah. 5:47 Allah ask the people of the gospel also follow the judgement as was revealed previously. (the one you quote, note that the verse ask the people of the gospel to follow the law , the verse did not address the muslims) Matthew 5 : 17. New International Version “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them" We Muslims have something similar to the Mosaic criminal law, dietary law and Abrahamic covenants. Of course you can have a law system with mortal punishments and the Mosaic law has that principle, but as to our behaviour as believers seeking to be right with God, if we want to be right with God legally by divine law, without the grace and forgiveness provided through Christ's atonement on the cross, we must love our enemies, personally that is. Mohammed would however lose his life if the "life for a life" was applied to him from the lesser level of the Mosaic law, given the many lives he snuffed out on inadequate grounds. Additionally he most certainly did not love his enemies, and yet rejected salvation through Christ for himself. The Quran is the most recent Book revealed and it acts as a Criterion over current Scriptures of the past. Whatever alligns with the Quran, theres no reason to reject it. Whatever are in contradiction, theres no reason to accept it. Example is as follows: There are various beliefs on who the guests received by Abraham were. The guests received by Abraham and visited Lot that is mentioned in Genesis (in the Torah) were angels. Allah chooses from the angels, messengers and from men. Surely, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. (Al-Quran 22: 75) In the Quran, the guests are referred to as Messengers: And certainly did Our rusul (messengers) come to Abraham with good tidings; they said, "Peace." He said, "Peace," and did not delay in bringing a roasted calf. But when he saw their hands not reaching for it, he distrusted them and felt from them apprehension. They said, "Fear not. We have been sent to the people of Lot." (Al-Quran 11: 69-70) And the guests did not reach for the food being served. And his wife was standing, and she smiled. Indeed, their appointment is [for] the morning. Is not the morning near?" (Al-Quran 11: 81) The guests identified themselves to Lot as messengers. The truth is to be expressed in love (Ephesians 4:15), offering hope to those seeking redemption from the lies of the world.
