I see the Spore Druid’s “necromancy” less as real necromancy and more like reutilizing a body for new life, i.e fungus. True necromancy is when you contort the soul and make it do your bidding as apposed to it going to its deemed afterlife. For the Circle of Spores, I imagine that the soul has already been released and you’re only using the corpse as an object to produce new life.

Thematically think of the necromantic side of this subclass as more like the last of us fungus people. Not unnatural or unholy undead. Just a different and odd form of nature that isn't considered "beautiful" or pleasant by most.

Circle of Spore RP flavor, Parasite. Sort of a much more bug theme version on Druid. Example: A Drow druid who has never been to the surface so their outlook on nature is much different to others.

I am just starting a female Tortal with this circle. She is 19 years old and her family owns a Mushroom farm. Her back ground is that she is an Inheritor. When her parents died she inherited a special mushroom. This mushroom is a hybrid mushroom called Angel of Death. It is a hybrid of 2 real world mushrooms. They are - Podostroma cornu-damae and Pleurocybella Porrigens. The mushrooms are white and red mixed. And they look like the real world Sinkhorn mushrooms. The mushroom is also her spell focus. Since she is a Tortal, and works in at the family Mushroom farm, she has mushrooms, lichen, molds, and other fungi that are actually growing on her shell. You can see the Angel of Death (killer spores), Morels (goodberry replacements), Reishi (A real world healing mushroom), and other mushrooms on her. When she casts her Halo of Spores and Symbiotic Entity she will chant "Comu-Damae Porrigens". And the spores will release from the mushrooms on her shell. The spores will be white and red in color. When she casts a healing spell, spores from the Reishi will rise from them as she chants "Reishi" to heal a target. Yes, I am going all out with doing RP as well. I am lucky to have a DM that is willing to work with me to tweak this Circle if we need to. If so, I will take notes. I am very excited to see how this Circle works out. I will update in a few weeks!

@dimond1806

@@allemanyus I am having so much fun with her. She is a very different kind of druid. She is Melee and able to cast. I am able to help just about everyone in the group. She is currently level 2 but is one of the hardest hitters. AC is at 19 because of Natural Armor and I have a shield. Just an example of what she is able to do at just level 2. At first round I cast Shillelagh on my staff. And then might use a spell or actually melee atack. My Wisdom is +3. So I roll attack at 1d20+3 to hit. Damage is 1d8+5. Then when possible, I use Halo of Spores on a target within 10 feet of me as a reaction. They have to make a DC 13 Con save. If they fail, they take 1d4 Necro dmg. And then I hit them. Then on 3rd round I cast Symbiotic Entity. I expend a wild shape so that I can do this. This gives me 8 temp HP, they take Halo of Spores dmg again ( 1d4 Necro ). My melee attack deals an extra 1d6 poison dmg on a hit. This lasts for 10 min. So, to sum all of that up. By the 3rd round if everything hits, no crits, here is possible dmg at level 2 Circle of the Spores Druid. 1d8+5, 1d4 (Necro), 1d4 (Necro) (from Symbiotic Entity), 1d6 poison = Possible damage of 13+4+4+6 = 27. Which is a good amount at level 2. It just gets higher as you level. Remember, this is all just if things go right with out a crit hit. You will want to make sure that your DM knows that you are Melee and that the rest of your party knows as well. It has caused some issues in my party because people are not used to a druid being up front next to the fighters and giving them competition on dmg output. But, I am having so much fun with the circle. I found that the Circle of Spores is actually not UA anymore and is in a published book. It is in Guild Masters Guide to Ravinica. Here is a link to the published Circle of Spores. 5e.tools/classes.html#druid_phb,state:ishidefeatures=b1~sub-spores-ggr=b1 Enjoy and have fun. Let me know how things go.

The next campaign I'm in I am totally playing a Spore Druid. But you're right in that the Spore Infestation trait is a little weak. I think a good buff would be to let the PC use the trait on any dead humanoid they can see, only being allowed to reanimate to a number of spore zombies up to half the Druid's level. That or keeping the spore kill requirement and allow the PC to reanimate anything he kills with the spores. Oh, and I know Wild Shape is supposed to apply only to beasts, but a Spore Druid should totally be able to turn into a Velvet Fungus.

A friend and I were theory-crafting with this subclass, and it seemed quite strong as a psuedo-tank melee caster at low levels. With 1d8+1d6+wis melee attacks at 2nd level and 6 free damage per turn with the halo of spores (which is doubled by the fungal shape), you can put out some really respectable damage assuming you land your attacks. You also get a bunch of temp-hp from the fungal shape power, and with decent con investment and/or playing a hill dwarf, your HP is nothing to scoff at. Also keep in mind that a druid can use a shield and club with shillelagh as well as non-metal medium armor, and assuming a dm can be talked into thick boiled leather and/or wooden half-plate, you could potentially reach 19 ac at a pretty low level. Sorry if this post is incoherent; I wrote it after a 6 hour dnd session in the middle of the night.

Done, and done. I do still think that this druid (and probably the moon druid) are extremely mechanically strong pre-5 at least. The later features of this class don't really keep ramping up its power, but they don't need to.

The zombie will have Undead Fortitude so it might not go down with one hit. The thing is you can pick weak minions and get as many as you can snipe with your reaction or spore cloud. Changing the tide of battle or siege with masses of spore zombies; very thematic. Undead Fortitude: If damage reduces the zombie to 0 hit points, it must make a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5+the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or from a critical hit. On a success, the zombie drops to 1 hit point instead.
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 7 жыл бұрын
That would certainly help keep it alive! Also good thinking on taking mini minions with the ability.
@tylerh2548
@tylerh2548 6 жыл бұрын
In certain game styles, I keep the Minions of 4e to provide high-damage, quick-dying fodder. I imagine the feel of The Witcher or For Honor where the PC can carve through normal mooks but can also take realistically severe damage from a sword slash if they get hit. So if I was GM, that death-spore ability would be situationally very effective and, to my mind, cinematic. I just imagine a horde of angry peasants, a gang of outlaws or a squad of soldiers converging on the "witch" only to fall back in a fit of coughing and collapse to then crawl back up as Last of Us Clicker zombies...all because they forced the Spore Druid to react to their aggression.

Personally, I LOVE the spore druid relationship with undeath. I have a character who (by way of long expository lore text) doesn't destroy the undead, but DOES chain them up so they can't hurt anybody. Her goal is to allow the undead to come to rest and peace by integrating their rotting bodies with new life that can grow out of them. She uses them as planters for grass, fungus, shrubs, and flowers. She swears that it makes them more docile and even content over time.

I personally have been toying with the idea of making one of these and giving it a go and I think thematically you could treat it like an odd ball either a druid who lives in the underdark among the Mycanoids or learned these tricks by studying them and the various forms of fungus, or the idea I have is that of the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis and the druid is sort of the all things must die and decay and in doing so life can begin anew and it can be beautiful sort of aspect, sort of a morbid but calming idea on how to handle death and show the "life" that comes from it in a twisted fun way

My Circle of Spores druid is a Fallen Aasimar, which is thematically a great fit, as the Fallen Aasimar can use his Necrotic Shroud to basicially increase the power of Halo of Spores. It sounds like a dark character at first, , but actually the Spores druid doesn't need to be that dark of a character. One of my druid's goals is to bring new life to places where nature was devastated and died, such as from monsters or wildfire, since fungi, moss and little plants are usually the first things that grow in an otherwise lifeless place. His wings are not the usual lifeless, skeleton wings, I rather describe them as black, decaying wings which are overgrown with plants and fungi, and when he uses Necrotic Shroud and opens them, basicially the whole area starts to come to life.

I'd make it. After you hit some one with the halo of spores. Also 3 points of poison is kinda dumb. I'd expect it to be something else. Like acid or necrotic because I've seen what fungus does to things. I'd also make it to where it does double damage to undead because of dead plants and stuff get eaten by fungus.

Double to undead would really fit
@Quandry1
@Quandry1 6 жыл бұрын
Poison can be a solid damage type. For seeming like something that could be a problem only creatures that naturally use poison, are elementals, or most undead tend to be blanket immune to it and a few more things like dwarves are resistant to it so it's a fairly solid damage type to deal. What makes poison strange is indeed the fact that Most undead are actually immune to it when you consider the fact that their flavor seems to have them intrinsically linked and involved with dead and undead entities. So Acid In that way could be a better fit. For Poison to be most fitting they would really have to double down on the cycle of life and death and things dying to nourish and feed into life which often starts with molds and spores instead of being so linked to undead. My thoughts to do that would be to open it up to more than just humanoids and add something like Beasts to it. And bring them back with some addition to their stat block marking their control by the spores such as only making the simple attack and a base amount of hit points based on the druid level. Not necessarily a whole lot of hp. But something like 1 per druid level Or the same as the halo of spores damage that they could do. Maybe even double the Halo of Spores Damage. Perhaps a set base speed of like 20. And the body breaks down and the power ends in an hour because the spores are literally devouring the body while they control it.

I've been playing a Circle of Spores Druid in a long running campaign. We're currently level 12. I love this character. I put a lot of flavor into her and made her unique and interesting compared to the other characters. I find that in my current campaign I dont do melee fighting much. I tend to be more useful from a distance because most of the party members are melee fighters. However, when I do get to get up close and personal with who we're fighting, I do a lot of damage. When I know the target is close to death I use my shalleigh to do nonlethal damage, then as a reaction I use my circle of spores to kill it and raise it as a zombie. I made my character have a really neat backstory so she is interested in how things decay after death because it is all apart of the circle of life. My character is neutral good and has a big heart. I dont tend to lean on the necromancy part, but I use it in a pinch. For example, I'll animate dead to help guard a place we found for a long rest when everyone needs the rest to regain their HP and spells and such. I try not to overuse these things though. I made her so she hates undead that never find a final resting place, but can use regular undead for help if needed. I love the contagion spell she gets. Its probably my favorite of the circle of spores spells. It's very powerful when they dont make the saves. I tend to use the reaction of spores to deal automatic damage outside of combat, more than in combat. If I'm interrogating someone or talking with an npc, I'll use it as an automatic reaction when they say things that aren't nice and I blame it on the mushrooms that grow on my robe. It's fun flavor. I intentionally made my character to fit into a campaign so that she wasn't overly powerful, but isn't useless either. She tends to me comitic relief in many situations and cares more for helping nature than dealing with necromancy. I can see how this character could be out of place in some campaigns and I could see why someone wouldn't like playing this class, but I've had a blast and I've really been able to use my imagination and come up with new cool ideas to make her a valued member of the party (more so than with any other character I've had). Overall, I think it's all in how you play the character and what campaign you're in, just like with many classes. If you're thinking about trying one out, I highly recommend this type of druid. Its different and fun!

I think it might be worth noting that by the time you get the Fungal Infestation class feature your Halo Of Spores damage has gone up to 6, or 12 if using Symbiotic Entity, so it’s not too far fetched to think you can last hit with that especially is you know a targets on their last legs. Additional thought Fungal Infestation procs when you SLAY a creature, not bring it to zero hit points like most other “Kill Skills” so in its current state your party should be able to render your foes unconscious with melee attacks instead of killing them and let you infest their bodies. One last thing, commoners have 4 hit points so you can devour towns super easy with this archetype by converting 10 feet per round of the peasantry into zombies, could make a devastating villain

Thematically I see these druids being the sort of 'black sheep' of the druid circles. Most druids of course don't like messing with the cycle of life and death and lets it occur naturally. If anything they help move it along with little exception. Spore druids however seem to delay this cycle (from the outsider perspective) by effectively adding different parts to it. So in this case if someone were to ask me what an 'evil' (still subjective) druid would look like, I can now point to Spore druids.

I know D&D is the major focus but I would LOVE your analysis style in looking at the options for Shadow of the Demon Lord by Rob. J. Schwalb. It's my current favorite system followed by Dungeon World and 5E and I tend to imagine how I'd make a character in SotDL and 5E at the same time. SotDL has a HUGE amount of customization for character progression and I think could really benefit from youtube commentary but it just hasn't got the traction (yet) to garner a dedicated channel.

Reanimation process should be so that the druid mark it with spore attack and it gets reanimation whoever kills it

I know this comment is a year or so late but I think this class is exactly what the Druid is missing. Death is as natural to the world as life. And Decay is to Death what Birth is to Life. So having a Druid that focuses on all aspects of nature including the beauty of Death and Decay is something that’s really been missing!

How does the fungal damage at level 2 improve at level 4 where other druids get a bump of some kind?

I was wondering if switching from Poison damage to necrotic damage would break this? It feels more thematic in my opinion but I don't know if that would be too op
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 7 жыл бұрын
It would make it stronger, for sure, but thats mostly because sooo much in the game has resistance to poison, which is much of the criticism for this ability. I'd say go for it, there's little in the game with necrotic vulnerability, so it shouldnt be too game shaking.

In many ways it reminds me of the animist class in the old MMO Dark Age of Camelot.

im going to be playing one pretty soon and only thing that is bothering me is that 95% of stuff is immune or resistant to poison. i was reading on a couple other posts that u should be able to choose what type of damage. like neco or poison.

I would ask your DM if the two of you can set a level where the damage converts from poison to necromantic, as the effect becomes more insidious. Maybe at level 5 or 7?

The thing about the zombies is that you can use your reaction outside of your turn can you not? And the zombie, if its a normal zombie, should get undead fortitude, right?
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 6 жыл бұрын
Since 5e does away with the template concept, it seems up to interpretation. I like the inclusion of undead fortitude for this though. I just wish they were explicit about it.

I'm a little behind but looking at the unearthed arcana. They either have to add a stat block to the finished product to represent the zombie or they expect you to use the existing statblock with only the adjustments they make being listed here. That being the hp really since Zombies can't actually do anything but attack and move anyway.

im thinking of playing as this in a game but it does have its draw backs. 1. do you think that it would be ok if i made the +1d6 to spells only instead of melee only since im only gonna use spells 2. what do you think i should modify about this class since in some areas it is weak (ex 1hp undead and it HAS to be humanoid, also poison damage is easily negated, the spreading of spores ability lasts for one whole minute and i dont believe you can call it back meaning you could be without halo of spores for a whole fight)
@TitanGamingTV
@TitanGamingTV 7 жыл бұрын
I think #1 would be fine, personally, and it pairs with #2. I'd say abandon the humanoid requirement, but you need to get the killing blow with either your Halo of Spores or Magic that applies Spore damage. So that way its like the spores grip the creature AS its dying. You can apply the health buffer I suggested in the video, but it may not matter. Just recall the pet dies after 1 hour. Give it a run :)
@TitanGamingTV

Also the prevalence of poison resistance IS tough, but you can just extend the Elemental Adept feat to provide the same benefits for poison damage. :)

You could use the same math used for your Symbiotic Entity, 3hp per druid level. That'll make it a pretty strong hit to take them out, instead of going down to a weak hit or an aoe.

it sounds like your a mushroom druid. i think if you could use your spores to rise a dead if you do halo of spores damage to it period it should rise. like the spores are animating it but also feeding off of it. i think the reaction should only be if you get hit like the spoors flew off you from the impact and not just for being attacked. maby do a damage over time instead of an instant damage like the spoors are growing off you. all and all i think this should resemble the parasitic aspect of some mushrooms.

This is my favorite ua subclass by far. But mechanically the fact that all of its damage is poison completely kills it. Really a shame. All they'd have to do is switch to necrotic and it would be gas.
