CS1 came out my final semester of middle school, and CS2 came out during my first semester of my masters in urban planning, and my enthusiasm for the new game never arose. I was worried i was out of touch now that I know the real world of city design, but it seems like everyone has been let down by the new game. Its hard to compete with the fully fleshed out 7+ years of DLC and modding the last game has, but you are so right in that it doesnt meet similar benchmarks in level of detail, quality, or design to the original base game. I never bought CS2 and it just shows that when you cant even include bike lanes in your base game, its a red flag/telling mark that your game is lacking a lot of core oomph that makes it the series we loved.

I was largely supportive of CO for the first two months after release because it seemed like many critics' expectations had been set unrealistically high and CO had a good track record of supporting and improving the original Cities: Skylines for a long time. However, I think that at this point the fact that it's February and they STILL are holding back modding tools can't be described as anything but egregious. And the snail's pace of bug fixes since release for a team of their size is equally egregious. Seems inexplicable that the whole office took almost a month-long vacation for their winter holidays and now they've "reduced the cadence" of updates when there's still such a huge amount of work to do.

Completely agree, I am enjoying CS2 right now, but what I am missing is modding, I don't go crazy, but in CS1 I needed variations of services, not every village needs such a big post office. Take the Welfare Office in CS2, its huge, I live in a city, I would expect a smaller compact building that fits with other taller buildings. Cross fingers CO can get the modding support in soon.

Paradox used to be one of the better game publishers out there, but in the last few years management has gone off a cliff. They're quickly reaching EA levels of mismanagement. Every game they've released in the last 3 years or so has been a complete dumpster fire. Unfortunately I don't have high hopes that they'll allow CO to do what needs to be done to make this game great. At this point they're basically forcing CO to focus entirely on DLC, which is likely why they just announced that they would no longer be releasing bug patches outside of the updates that come with DLC. The fact that they even have the audacity to start releasing DLC for a game in this state is quite telling.

Your video is one of the most optimistic reviews of CS2 and I appreciate your viewpoint. I thought I was the only one experiencing that economy glitch. One day I stopped playing and I was just doing my thing trying to keep the budget equal, then after 24 hours after loading it up, some how I'm banking over $100k from concrete alone. It's weird! I also agree with you on the tornadoes (which for some reason if you install an early alert system, it doesn't do anything) and the parks. I also agree that the roads are WAY better in CS2 than in CS1. I just wish that TMPE was also in the vanilla based off of the mod's popularity. Otherwise, I also agree that there were missteps in the launch, but it's not worth complaining without being constructive. I enjoy playing CS2 and I can't wait to see what Paradox does with it. I bet CS1 wasn't perfect at launch and look at it now. I hope we can say the same about its predecessor. Thank you for your insight!

You have to be honest with everyone and stop claiming "it's great, but...", as it's just a heap of trash. The game is unfinished, empty, broken and sometimes utterly unplayable. If it were only a couple of bugs which needed addressing, then this title might still have some life in it. However, the sad truth is that even core simulation mechanics simply don't work (e.g. traffic AI or the economy in general), while several other aspects were clearly an afterthought (e.g. ground and road textures). After more than 3 months of fixing and updates, this game is just not enjoyable and it's hard to see how this dead man's ship could still be turned around. Even content creators have to acknowledge that Paradox Interactive destroyed one of the supporting pillars of both parties' revenue model. The harsh truth is that this game is dead and probably won't be resurrected anymore. We'll just have to wait for another company to take over and do it right, just as we did in 2013 after EA made a mess of Simcity.
@tendaishechidakwa Жыл бұрын
The game is certainly not great. It is an underwhelming experience which failed to deliver on its promises. It actually regressed from CS1 in many areas. Why should we have empty stadiums and schools something we had in a game from ages ago. Why should we lack basic animations the CS1 managed to do? The industries are generic and boring compared to CS1. Farm textures look the same, and mining and oil industries look unrealistic and uninspiring. Indie games such as Workers and Resources managed to do great industries with realistic buildings, vehicles, pipelines etc all of which make the city look real. The simulation which was touted as revolutionary is broken and does not even work as expected. We were told that people actually go to work and families are simulated yet people don't actually go to work and children can even live alone in a low-density house complaining about high rentals all the time. Whilst they did well by incorporating some popular mods, the lack of simple things such as props and quays is baffling and indicates a game that was prematurely released or was held back by Paradox's model of wanting to sell DLCs, so content could have been held back. Performance issues and bugs clearly indicate poor quality testing, because they should have picked up most of this stuff earlier on. Apologies for the rant, but I really expected something better from Colossal Order.

I suspect there's tension within the community and what the 2 groups value from CS2 pulls CO in opposite directions. You said you're a painter, ergo the majority of your concerns centres around visual representations, ergo, the mechanic bugs arent an issue for you. The other side would be the simulation players, ergo if the simulation doesnt work the game doesn work. I fall in the later camp. I can excuse graphical inaccuracies as long as the game works, as long as the traffic know how to merge and use all the lanes available to them. As to whether CO knows what needs to be fixed, IDK.... much of how they've handled this mess doesnt bode well for confidence and good will. But ya kinda nailed it when you speculated CO left a lot out of the game so they could sell it back to us via DLCs. Cool? Id argue no.

I mean, Cities Skylines 2 had his last chance to do the right thing, the game is already released like that, I don't believe it will change for better in a large scale, it happened to Cities Skylines 1, we been waiting for the game to get some love it deserves and it never happened, but they said it couldn't be possible on CS1, so they make Cities Skylines 2 and none of the things went to the game, they literally deceived us all, I'm going to point fingers, someone made that happen, the game is actually dead, maps are so empty, it's just like CS1, we thought we could finally have some amazing beautiful maps this time, but we're just getting the same maps like CS1, when I thought about the sequel I wished they could make a whole new game different from the last one, improving all the mistakes and limitations of CS1, and we got a clone of the first one, the public services are all the same, there's no variety, parks are ugly asf, they managed to do it wrong and worse this time, and it's 2023-2024, there's no bicycle lanes, all these massive train station was all to show up that the game can have bigger stations and depots, I don't really understand why there's no small version, why we can't make a realistic small city, and make like a history, the game is stuck in modern days forever, you can't be creative like that, everything is against you, and this is something the company wanted to do, they didn't care at all, I still remember in the early days before release they was laughing, the game was already in a horrible state and they laughed at us, we asking if it was all beta and if in the release it could all be fixed, they made us believe it, that the beta version had nothing to do with the released version, and we got the same game, full of bugs, and they keep laughing in these diaries videos, acting like everything is okay, nothing went wrong, it's like they knew, and wanted to laugh about all the people who pre order the game way back, and couldn't really get refund in time, because they knew the game reviews could get butchered to wazo, and now they're going play like "everything is going to be fine, here some DLCs, are you happy now, bye"

I believe Colossal Order really made the biggest mistake that any game developer can make, they release a game that wasn't fully ready to be released. Plus charging people full price for a product that is still in it's beta stage of development. They betrayed the trust and loyalty of their fans because of pure greed. Cities Skylines 2 still could turn out to be a great game but because of the betrayal that Colossal Order did I don't know if anyone will be willing to giving them or the game a second chance. I know that I will never give them another chance to betray my trust.

I feel like CO is the one that's been toxic by calling its community of players toxic when we've called out the incomplete game, the terrible game play, and the rushed product. They had years of feedback, modding, and dlcs from cs1, so they know what needs to be in cs2. The stuff left out was some on purpose to get people to purchase it later through dlcs. Take the beach dlc they tried to release and had to pull back. That only happened because the community said no, while CO called us toxic for it. I still only have a few hours in cs2. I may play it someday but i don't want to play a beta game that i paid full price for.

Game was not ready, not even close, they knew it, they released it and they took everyone s money. They were just fine charging a huge price for a very substandard project. Then they proceed to gaslight the community for being upset about it. Everyone relax, they are excited to bring you some paid DLC for very basic features they didn’t have in the base game. Lost all respect for CO. Sure Paradox is also part of the problem but I had no respect for them to lose.

CO said in the forums, the missing animations (fire fighters etc) are because the cim models were delayed and they didn't have time to do the animations. Which is also why bikes are missing. But they consider that a minor problem, so it won't be addressed before the editor and mod support, console release and other bug fixes. I disagree with you when it comes to communication, it's a mess. The Word of the Weeks seem tone-deaf ("this game might not be for you"), number 12 didn't have any dev answers all week. First, they thought about stopping them all together, then they did, until Paradox stepped in... Whenever I catch a live stream on KZbin, it feels like they're starting a new city every time, because the game still runs well. The biggest city I've seen was maybe 20k.

I'm a sandbox player so don't delve into the economy. I like to make pretty neighborhoods. I didn't expect all the assets I would want -- assets would begin to fill the workshop. But I did expect it to be better modded, to incorporate the best mods from the workshop into the base game. In CS, a lot of the assets are just eye candy. So I was hoping that we would see better asset integration into the game play -- kids playing in the backyard of a user created house. People using the parks. But as you point out, assets don't seem to be well thought out. Mandatory buildings are too big and upgrades rigid. Upgrading isn't freeform. It's not what I expected. I think that CO built the game that they wanted CS to be originally, not what CS ended up being through the workshop. I'm not interested in roaming dogs nor in learning citizens' thoughts. Performance was ok, but if I had the detailed assets I use in CS, I don't believe that it would. I have put CS2 on the shelf and have pretty much stopped watching videos on it. I don't know when/if I will return to it -- they are working on 'bugs' while I feel they need to also be addressing the philosophy behind the game.

A lot of the issue is money doesn’t have much value, you get so rich that building an entire (sub)city can be built like a small prefab residential neighborhood.

A mod deleted that message saying to not bump threads, then continued to fail to acknowledge the thread was even seen. A couple months go by and still no one has responded to the support ticket. One of their patch notes made note that they have added improved crash log reports so then I updated my ticket again asking how we could take advantage of the new better logging info and...... nothing. They won't tell me what they want, so I can't help them fix the issue. They're not even acknowledging it is an issue, guess it's all in my head then. Who knows. all valid issues i cant really disagree with. The modders have done a fantastic jobs until now releasing on other platforms though. Regarding creating custom parks, i see that it should probably possible to create custom park areas with the Dev tool, like there are hangaround and relaxation areas etc you can draw. So i dont think they held back on this in the vanilla game because they want to hold it back for a park DLC (of course that one will come at some point), they just ran out of time to implement in the base game, just like with so many other features. more animations for cims like hearse drivers, i think Mariina just mentioned somewhere that more animations are definately planned. considering the performance issues they had or still have, i think its reasonable to cut hold back on this for the time being.

What happened to Anacadianabroad?
@brianmartin6016 Жыл бұрын
CO has been a company that has gone from being stellar to an almost utter failure overnight. I don't know what happened? Was it a CEO or board change? Probably. Sorry but they need to be more player and customer oriented. Take fore example...oh let's say Larian Studios as an example of good customer service and listening to its player base. This IS a constructive criticism. Grow thicker skin and do what's right! Listen to the customer base. Thank you for your review Timeister! I agree on nearly every point. Good and bad. So much to fix...for FREE and not in DLC please!

At a minimum everything in Cities 1 vanilla should be in Cities 2 but it feels like they have only worked on the game for 12 months not 5 years and that they have on done the bare minimum and are relying on modders to finish the game. Just think how fast they have created mods for a game without official mod support while CO are still struggling to make a workable game. LOL. Also if you have a fire chopper why is it dumping water on the building next to the fire....

Games need to pass PlayStation's quality assurance to get on their system, Cities isn't going to get the pass any time soon
@MrMpa3111 ай бұрын
You are completely wrong with your final thoughts. This was a full release, sold at full price. It is not up to the "community" to beta test a game they paid for. Giving CO a pass here is exactly why they felt they could give you this game in the state they did. Gamers need to stop accepting this nonsense.

We should expect improvements over the original, not simply accept mediocrity because that's what we got in the past. Did CO not learn anything or advance at all over these many years?

Cs2 is an alfa game that people paid for and yet again the mod community is fixing a game that the devs missed of what people wanted in cs1. It does not make me look forward to a console release.

The single most annoying thing abotu this game is.... THE CRANES!!! Omg, i hate the cranes on low desnisty properties. Not realistic AT ALL!!! I get why you need a crane for mid-rise and high rise but for a single story house? IT REASLLY BUGS ME!!!! hahaha

Great assessment of the game so far. One very important fact that EVERYONE has overlooked- yes the game is "unfinished and could been left in the oven for a few more months BUT- CO did say they game was scheduled to be released EARLIER but was DELAYED due to the PANDEMIC!!!! Imagine how much of a disaster that just might have been!!!!!

Sorry, but you're full of crap. Your statements are just stroking developers on the head, hoping for what? free dlc in the future? The second part of the game is much more expensive at launch than the first one. What do we get in return? An empty game full of bugs with the hope that they will be fixed in the future? That if I spend even more money, maybe the developers will fix the fundamental problems in the DLC? It's like buying a premium home with your hard-earned money and moving into it. Once on site, it turned out that there was no access road to it because the construction team had not had time to build it. For now, you'll be knee-deep in mud because maybe one day they'll build it. The house has no roof or it is leaking, there are no windows, the stairs are broken in half. You have a home, enjoy it. You can't complain about an unfinished product for the full amount. If they didn't manage to do something and you paid for it in full, you should receive it, not hope that you will get it one day if you wait patiently. Let's finally stop accepting how game publishers treat us - pushing products that are in the alpha or early beta phase. For example, look at older games like RollerCoaster Tycoon, the second part of the game had everything that the first part had. It has been expanded with more and better things that make the game fresh and more enjoyable. No one neutered the second one, hoping that you would buy 15 DLCs that would make the game at least partially as complete as the first one. In direct comparison, CS2 looks the same, if not worse than the first one. Where are the 8 years of expansion of the previous game? Where are the conclusions, the improvement?

The internet can get relly toxic. But there is a tipping point in disappointment where that toxicity is warranted. It is toxic in and of itself to relegate any warranted criticism as toxic. They promised so much in their marketting campaign and delivered on nearly none of it. Then when people were upset, they acted like those people were the problem. Paradox is the new EA. No longer are they concerned with making games that people love and can support. Instead they continuosly release incomplete games and then charge more to fix them through DLC. Companies just need to start charging more for complete games. Video games have been about 60 dollars for 40 years now. Just make complete games and charge more for them instead of parsing out hundreds of dollars through DLC over several years to fix incomplete games.

@yaboiandrew2058 Back in the old days, developers were fully finishing a game because they couldn't touch it anymore. Now they are relaxed because they can fix whatever problem appears. Personally, I prefer it that way.

@@Charles_AnthonyI get your point but a video game or software in general is a bit different in my world. It’s all about iterating, getting feedback, iterating. It’s less static than a car. Doesn’t negate the fact that less bugs on release is preferable 😅

Okay I’m sorry and don’t want to be rude but all the cities skylines content creators clearly got together and decided to release the same critical videos all at the same time. Cities 2 isn’t that bad. I don’t know why that’s a hot take but it’s not that bad. I have a mid range PC and I have a lot of fun playing the game. Y’all want too much. It’s not cities one and it’s not supposed to be. It’s not perfect and has work to do but it’s not that bad.

mods (and dev mode) fix most of the shortcomings about detailing that people are complaining about. i don't get it. just get the mods and stop complaining about something that is fixable. its okay to point out that paradox mods is late and these features should have been built in ( or ARE built in but don't have a UI (dev mode). but pretending it's not fixable is borderline dishonest. [edited to add "dev mode"]
