I have always thought it good to use an engine oil cleaning treatment to flush the deposits and gunk out of a motor (at least some of them) before opening it.

I think the cuts along pistons are so the pistons dont seize in the cylinders when the pistons heat up. Under extreme load conditions. (Small 2 cyl engine in a transporter that might get very hot when it gets overloaded or going up mountains.) I think its on ford model a and t pistons too. As far as im aware its because the kind of aluminum that was available back then would expand more under heat than the aluminum mix that is used for pistons today.

Recessed valve seats on older engines can be due to the switch to unleaded petrol in the 70s/80s. The lead protected the valve seats (and poisoned us all and cost us IQ points 😁), but later on hardened valve seats were used. When you're fitting new valves, check out the possibility of fitting hardened valve seats if possible. With that you can future proof this engine without using additives or just living with the fact that the valve seats will just be eaten away again.
@SeasideGarage2 ай бұрын
Being a aluminum head the valve seat will already be hardened steel... :) The 2cv engine (602 at least) did not change anything in the head going from lead to unleaded... and they are totally safe to run on unleaded. Im pretty sure its the same with the 425cc :)

Such a long vertical opening in the piston wall is also on my 1940 Opel Kadetts pistons. In my Opel technical book from 1937 is written that these so-called "Invar-Streife" are made to achieve a regular/gleichmäßigere Ausdehnung extension. So, it is okay.

maybe it has to do something with high temperatures, so it doesnt bind the piston if it gets too hot?

I wonder if the reason why the grooves are oriented opposite of each other is due to the rotation of the engine? During the power stroke, the connecting rod will not be parallel to the cylinder, meaning that the piston will be forced to one side. And I doubt it would be very good if the side that was being forced against the cylinder had a groove like that. But I could be wrong!
@anair702 ай бұрын
Valves work one way right? Against the compression? The air pressure would lift the valves a bit and let air out.really old engines didn't have a cam to open the valves, they depended on thr vacuum as the piston descended to pull the valve a bit (weak valve spring) and allow the inlet mixture into the combustion chamber.
@chriscansdale63892 ай бұрын
I wanted to draw attention to the way you tested the valves.. although you show that they are wearing, I would have thought you would draw a vacuum against them from the ports? Pressurising the ports would (depending on the pressure and spring strength) start to force the valves open and they would leak. As you say, it had reasonable compression. It perhaps would have been better to do a leak down test whilst still assembled. By feeding compressed air into the bore via the spark plug hole on the firing stroke (so both valves closed) you could then assess leaking, either past rings (into the crankcase) or out of either of the ports if a valve was leaking and also identifying which valve. Alternatively you could have used petrol as you mentioned, but left it to sit and then look in via the ports to see which if any valve stems were wet. Petrol is better than water as it wicks through more easily.
@SeasideGarage2 ай бұрын
I only applied very little pressure.. and it leaked straight away... I also vacuum tested it.. and its bad.. But its true that pressure would open the valves at some point :)
