As the owner of a C6, I can assure you there is a significant difference between the Hydractive III suspension specifications on the C5 and C6. The C6 ride is more limousine-like than the C5. As Jonathan Price points out below, it's like comparing an E Class with and S Class - different cars for different purposes. Phillip Moran's below comments describe a C5 with seriously faulty suspension, the obvious clue being the 'leaking shocks' he describes. Hydractive III Citroens do not have 'shocks'; they have robust spheres that have service intervals of five years. With all Hydractive or earlier Hydro-pneumatic Citroens, if a sphere loses too much pressure or ruptures, the driver becomes aware as the ride immediately stiffens and feels quite harsh. You wouldn't drive a conventional car with leaking shock absorbers and expect a compliant, comfortable, or safe, ride so why would you expect more of a Citroen? Having experienced 5 Hydraulic Citroens over 35 years, none have ever developed leaks in the high pressure Hydraulic pumps or lines. I've only ever replaced one sphere, which hardly amounts to the description of a system that is too 'complex or expensive', unless of course you believe your cars should require no maintenance and you resent spending anything on them at all. My current C6 has travelled 120,000 kms without any trouble. It is solid, well sorted, performs strongly, and is extremely fuel efficient for a beast that weighs close to 2 tonnes. Perhaps Philip Moran's C5 has had an extremely hard life, been mistreated, or poorly serviced? Having owned a wide range of Japanese, German, and British cars (a few BMWs, SAABs and Mercedes Benzs included) I can honestly say that Citroens seem to suffer no greater a number of faults than their competitors and, as I said above, I've only ever replaced one sphere. Everything wears out eventually so to expect to not have to replace spheres on a Citroen at some stage is simply unrealistic. I've just replaced the shock absorbers on my E Class Mercedes at 155,000 kms but I'm not about to claim that this proves conventional suspension is a failure. It's just different. To understand a Citroen, you must drive a Citroen - and not just around the block. The capabilities of Hydractive suspension are simply world-beating, but they are only fully revealed after driving a Citroen through rough country roads, smooth highways and around cities. Then, the full range of the system's abilities are revealed.

I spend around 1800 € on repairs and maintenance during these years what is, I think, still allright. It is something special and it is just stupid to compare it to, for example, an E class. The E class has got a suspension that is at least 30 years old technologie so it is quite logic that it isn't as refined but therefor maybe a bit more reliable. @tyraela1155 жыл бұрын
We used to have GS-A, BX, and passanger experience in Xantia back in the late 90`s, drove C5 I. generation, and I drive occasionally my uncle`s C5 Tourer (with sporty front seats). Months ago I also occasionally drove several new C5 Aircrosses and facelifted C4 Cactuses (at Citroen dealership where I worked for a while) both with Progressive Hydraulic Cushions. Just so you know I have some experience in that department. :) Conclusion: Progressive Hydraulic Cushions comes from Rallye world that Citroën once again cleverly modified for comfortable ride - no electronics as you well know (which is cheaper to maintain I suppose if anything goes wrong). Seats are softer than in my uncle`s C5 Tourer because they provide additional cushioning in addition to the suspension. On the negative side - those same seats aren`t designed to hold you as well in corners than those in the C5 II but they were never ment to either. But the real drawback for me is that Progressive Hydraulic Cushions lack sophistication of Hydractive 3+ and all previous generations of that system. and that is sad. I miss something like this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lamafX9taL-me5I kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6exeIGJgLR0e6M Even this simply does not compare: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rH7ChIKNZ92Ebac

@Spurdospaerde6922 жыл бұрын
To be precise, the car in the Tekniikan Maailma (FI)/Teknikens Värld (SE) "moose avoidance test" was not any Xantia, but a Xantia Activa, first produced in 1995. In addition to the "normal" Xantia's (and XM's) already great Hydractive 2 suspension, the Activa also had separate hydraulic cylinders attached to the anti-roll bars, which kept the car flat during aggressive cornering. This was the only Citroën ever made with this system. The Activa achieved the highest max speeds in the TM/TV test, beating not only any other mass-produced people-carrier, but also every super sports car that was submitted to the test. I think it still holds the record. Unfortunately, in 2017 the cretins at Stellantis/PSA/Citroën decided that steel springs and drilling a few holes in regular shock absorbers are good enough, so now there's no longer any cars with any hydropneumatic suspension made, and thus no longer any point of buying a Citroën over any other marque.

Having owned many Citroens over many years, a properly maintained LHM fluid hydro pneumatic is very very reliable. change the fluid and filter... Even as a rally car very reliable and much safer than regular suspension. Advantages of self levelling, height adjustable and even changing tyres set it so far above the rest. You are more likely to have an electrical fault.. eg XM No shock absorbers to replace, spheres screw off to replace between 7 and 10 years,

@TK4213810 жыл бұрын
Both my XM's and Xantia had 100 percent reliable suspension. Only minor problem on my present XM was a perished rubber fluid return pipe on the front strut which popped off but that was all. I would rather deal with a suspension sphere on a Citroen than a rusty old coil spring on any other car. A good proportion of my work as a mobile mechanic was replacing broken springs on 'normal cars'. So long as LHM and filters are changed at the correct interval, these cars are fine. Quirky but not scary to work on.
@rui51810 жыл бұрын
i am looking for more info, but how many times need this suspension to be maintain? what's the mileage to change spheres and oil??
@TK4213810 жыл бұрын
Depends on the Citroen model and year. On Xantias, XM's etc with the green LHM, I would change fluid and clean the filter every two years but certainly more times than Citroen's original guidelines. The C5, C6 etc used different hydraulic fluid and control system with far more electronic components and supposedly a longer service interval. As for spheres - you'll know when they are failing because the ride quality suffers. On the BX, Xantia and XM, the spheres go rock hard and makes the car undrivable. A failing accumulator sphere will force the system to work harder and you'll hear loud regular clicks, groans, hissing every few seconds from the front of the engine where the accumulator and regulator is bolted to.
@TK421389 жыл бұрын
Never had issues with suspension on the two XM's or the Xantia although the rear spheres can put up a bit of a fight when changing them. Sometimes the Xantia and XM front strut low pressure fluid return pipe can perish but they're easy to replace and should be considered a service item. Yet to find a modern car that can handle like a limo or a GTi with just a flick of a hydractive switch.

If you type in Wikipedia Self-levelling suspension you also get this: "...In 1966, Rolls-Royce licensed Citroën's hydropneumatic system to fit to the rear axle of the Silver Shadow. At first, both the front and rear of the car were controlled by the leveling system; the front levelling was deleted in 1969 as it had been determined that the rear levelling did almost all the work. Rolls-Royce achieved a high degree of ride quality with this arrangement. ..." For the rest google Rolls Royce. :)

The mechanical parts in the system has been in use since the 1950's so it's very well tested, and the spheres themselves lasts about 200000km nowadays and costs only from ~40€ per sphere to replace. Compare that to the cost of replacing a broken air cushion, on let's say a Audi A6 Allroad (which does not lost anywhere near as long) and you'll begin to wonder why other manufactures even bother with air suspension instead of hydropneumatic suspension. Especially since they don't even get close to the comfort level.
@loffe98 жыл бұрын
Wrong! 1 Ive been driving oily Cits for 40 years and never had one damaged. 2 The spheres can be re charged quite cheaply, unlike expensive spring and damper sets. 3. Cit garages charge much less than Range Rover, Rolls or Bently, who use similar systems

don't forget the train suspension. really, that's what they use in almost all their cars, even in the "sporty" mustang BTW, multilink suspension was invented in the 50's, 60's. They don't use that yet.

Part3, The state wants old cars off the road, local regulation makes maintaining a car past 20YO utterly expensive. Penalties include: 2 technical controls a year, sky high insurance, no towing insurance, no-low spare parts availability, parts self-import problems, extra emission test and constant hustle by police inspections. They want the car off the road and they make sure you got the massage.

Unfortunatly, its the hard truth, most of modern french car are a pain to service and repair, older french car like the old AX or Clio did have there drawback but doing some a simple basic maintenance was possible

Indeed. It seems that people are idiots. Instead of buying it cheap from citroen they switched to f*** expensive from mercedes. Thus making citroen to stop producing hydroactive fitted cars at all. I won't even try to understand this ultimate dumbness. Thanks for pointing out Mercedes license.

In reply to 2Str0k3: "How many 24 year old french cars do you see on the road still? None." Umm... my 1990 Citroen XM with 300.000 kilometres on the clock still works, in fact, everything works on it! I have seen a lot of 30+ year old Citroen and Peugeot cars on the road for the past 8+ years, I see most of them almost everyday! Just realize that EVERY single car on the road today needs maintenance! The only times your car breaks down is when you don't give a flying fuck about it! (i.e, you don't change the oil, oil filter, coolant, break pads and so on when the respective thing needs to be changed) If the only thing you do to your car is re-fuelling it, your car is going to break down any minute! There is not a single car available today that is maintenance-free! A special message to 2Str0k3: Fuck off you ignorant twat!

I had 3 CXs and they were great cars,at the time a lot of people were critical of them but if you ask them if they had owned one or driven one the reply was usually no. With the C6 it may suffer from the same problem,but who cares let them buy their euroboxes which will never be remembered as they lack any soul.

Well Citreon suspension is the best in the world. Ferrari suspension is not electrocuted. It isn't that exclusive either, Cadillac uses it. It only comprises of magnetic particles. And Rolls Royce only uses a form of air-suspension. Citroen has been using this advanced hydro-pneumatic system since the 1930's. That is how far ahead of technology they were.

Not incredible need regular maintenance but if she wasnt a commercial fail due to the conception time (the concept presented in 98 took 6 yrs to lunch the product)her poor marketing management only like 23 384 from 2005 to 2012 a disaster(someone has been fired for this)she would be selled way more for making it rentable and showing a refiabilised version otherwise a lot of them are pretty nice in fiability but the ones who have problems with call her the affectuously "C666" i bet you wonder why if its the suspension you beter get a garage or come dirrectly to Citroën

Best suspension in the world? For what comfortable or sporty ride I ve had a c5 2010 its great very comfortable but not sporty ride because the body moves a lot on corners anyway I still love it
@kevinmusai10 жыл бұрын
Its a soft suspension comfortable but not for performance
@AlperAkbilgi10 жыл бұрын
Body movement does not compromise road holding in hydropneumatic suspension. It is a hydropneumatic thing. You have to get used to it. My XM has so much body movement but yet it has a good roadholding like a sports car. But if you eliminate the bodyroll like in xantia activa, it handles the corners like a supersport car.

Ammm, not always true. In my 4 ZX cars it never been a problem, even with my Vulcane 2.0i were the engine compartment is a little more tight on space. It is not a problem with my current Xsara Picasso. It was like that on the first generation of C5, but on the second generation it is not so. I dare you to try replacing a headlight on a Porsche 914 (retractable headlights) M3 BMW is no picnic and I can find you dozens more examples. I do not buy my car according the the headlights replacing time.
