I have so much good and funny memories about the hydropneumatic susension of my late XM! - One day on my way home I came across a street flooding. The fire department stopped all cars and told them to take another route. I just smiled, put the lever at full height, the car lifted up. The fireman´s jaw dropped, then he smiled and waved me through. I reached the other side of the flooding without any problem. - Another day I returned a borrowed trailer to my local hardware store. The man told me I had to wait until a man was available to unhook the trailer. So I took a little ball to unlock the lever, released the electrical connection, extended the third wheel, then I entered the car, lowered the car, drove a few feet forward and lifted the car back up. Another customer who had witnessed the whole thing, looked at his beer bottle, looked at my car, back to the beer bottle, then he threw away the bottle! - When I worked as site supervisor for the german railway I had a deployment to a railway crossing that was located in the middle of a forest. Due to the fact that the forest path was normally used by communal vehicles it was pretty overgrown. The security personnel that were with me had to leave their cars at a parking lot half a mile from the crossing. So I invited them to a ride in my XM. They were astonished when I pulled the lever to full height and the fully occupied car lifted up and glided above the underbrush. Two weeks later two of the security guys had bought Citroens for themselves! A few months later I was located at the railway technical warehouse in our district. A colleague called because he urgently needed some critical things which were pretty heavy. A coworker told me to take the truck to deliver, but that would have meant overtime and that I couldn´t return the truck because the company premises would have been locked up for the weekend. So I suggested to load the whole shipment into my Citroen station wagon. He agreed and told me that after delivering I could drive home. When everything was loaded in, the car looked like the axle wanted to break. I started the engine and after a short moment the car lifted up as if it was completely empty. Jaw drop # 1! I left the premises and drove to the construction site where my colleague waited with his VW LT truck. When I signaled him, he came down to me to help me lift the material onto his truck bed, but I put my lever to full height and the height was nearly level so we only had to shift it horizontally. Jaw drop #2. A nice way to start a weekend! - When I had a deployment to Bremen one day I was very late. My destination was not far from the last exit before the Bremen motorway junction. Dumb as I was I started to overtake another car short before my exit. With high speed I went into the exit, breaking and knowing that the bend got tighter in the end. Due to my experience with cars without hydropneumatique I expected to slide into the embankment and to roll over. But....in the moment the bend started and the car experienced the expected high g-forces, the computer reacted and stiffened the suspension to a racecar-like level which kept me in track and I reached the end of the bend safe and sound. The only thing harmed were my undertrousers! - A funny thing I used to do if I was in a traffic jam. Especially if there were children in the surrounding cars! Having nothing better to do, I started to let the car sink and rise, up and down. Then I watched the children´s excitement flare up, while my mimic pretended to be unaware of the reason for their excitement. Always funny! TL/DR: What a car!

It is a shame that it never caught on. In every respect, comfort, safety, roadholding, the hydropneumatic suspension was by far surperior to everything else. I had two cars with the system and it proved to be very reliable, only slightly more cost of maintenance than normal suspension. Citroën does not do hydropneumatics anymore (hardly) because it was too expensive to make. Unfounded conservatism and financial thinking eventually killed a far superior system. A shame.

So true that. I still have a GSA. My brother had a light 16, numerous Ds and Cxs and GSs. My son also has had GSs and CXs. His last GS he turbo charged. Alas someone run into him and wrecked it.. They are the best car ever made. Though they had rotten stupid carburettors and the interior was poorly made. But they were popular enough in France I think.

Ronald de Rooij Maintenance is cheaper with nowadays hydropneumatic suspension than traditional thanks to that they are more reliable and need very seldom any maintenance (I know some 2008 C5 models came with bad parts but that is no more and not the fault of the system).

Hydrolastic and hydragas are much simpler (I don't really know the details of how the Citroen system works) and work very well despite having a few disadvantages.

Als ich las, dass die HP definitiv stirbt, hatte ich tatsächlich Tränen in den Augen. Denn die HP war eben typisch Citroën und ein Brückenschlag zwischen den goldenen Citroënzeiten und der Gegenwart. Ich freue mich auf den Sommer, wenn ich wieder BX fahren kann🤗.

Paul Philipp Hedderich nicht nur Du bist traurig darüber . Mein ältester wird in wenigen Wochen 18 und sich einen BX 19 TZi zugelegt und mein jüngster hat letztes Jahr noch mehr Glück gehabt und sich schonmal einen GSA Pallas vom Konfageld günstig gekauft und trocken eingelagert . Wir alle können es nicht verstehen , wie man so ein geniales Federungssystem als Autohersteller langsam eingehen lassen kann . Das war doch ua. mal das , was einen Citroen so besonders machte .

@@citroendrivervorever1148 , hatte früher auch einen GSA Pallas. Es war das genialste überhaupt mit dem Federungssystem. Es ruft auch bei mir Unverständnis hervor, das HP eingestampft zu haben.

@@outdoorheiko , mittlerweile hat mein Jüngster den Führerschein mit 17 ( begleitendes Fahren ) , der GSA sieht aus , wie neu und er ist in den letzten drei Monaten fast 5000km gefahren . Er liebt dieses Auto sehr und möchte nichts anderes mehr fahren . Den BX hat er von seinem Bruder für eine schmale Mark übernommen und steht in auch gutem Zustand in der Scheune.

Auch im Jahre 2013 warten wir noch geduldig darauf, dass sich unser Citroen nach dem Start aufbockt, um den vollen Komfort genießen zu können, die die Hydropneumatik ermöglicht.

Ich vermisse die Hydropneumatik, schade das diese nicht mehr Gebaurt wird, Unser Xantia von 1997 hatte eine bequemere Federung als ein heutiger a6 Allroad mit Luftfederung!! Zu dem Konnte man den Xanta das Doppelt höher legen und Tieferlegen als mit der Normalen Luftfederung.

The mistake of the current Citroen is to remove their legendary hydraulic suspension. Without that, it's not the same Citroen anymore. This is not the future I wanted to see in him. Andre Citroen is even more so.. I'm crying. Sedan, station wagon. Where is it all? Where are the hydraulics? Nowhere.. nowhere else.. now cardboard boxes will go and are not needed by anyone. The real and best Citroen will be in my heart forever, and in the past❤💔

Der Traction Avant war ab etwa 1954 optional mit einer Hydropneumatik zu haben, die aber nur an der Hinterachse Verwendung fand!

Interesanter weise ist das wagen mit herkömmlicher Federung ein Tracion Avant (ich wies nich ob ich es richtig geschrieben habe), jedenfalls finde ich es vardammt fair von Citroen kein produktionsfremdes Fahrzeug zur demonstration des Komfortverlustes durch eine herkömmliche Federung gegenüber einer Hydropneumatik heranzusiehen. (PS: ich selbst fahre einen Peugeot, aber ein Freund von mir hatte bis vor Kurtzem einen C5 mit Hydropneumatik, musste ihn aber leider wegen des Spritverbrauchs abgeben)

Je trouve très étonnant de voir tant d étrangers apprécier les anciennes voitures françaises. Pendant très longtemps, elles étaient considérées comme les pires véhicules au monde (moches et de mauvaises qualité surtout chez les anglophones (french bashing).

Citroen hatte diesen Erfolg!!! Das sieht man daren, dass heutige Nobelmarken (von Audi bis Rolls) dieses System abgekupfert haben, seit das Patent ausgelaufen ist! Davor haben sie es beschimpft ... weil sie (außer Rolls) die Patentgebühren nicht zahlen wollten!!!

Meint zumindest Peugeot. Tatsächlich wären viele Kunden bereit, für das Komfortplus 2-3000€ Aufpreis zu bezahlen, was die Sache auch wirtschaftlich machen würde. Mercedes und Co. legen für deren Luftfederoption auch nicht drauf! Im Gegenteil könnte man diese sehr wohl auch im kleineren Segment (Golf-Klasse) als Extra anbieten. Dann hätte man wieder einen GS ☺️ Die OEM sind einfach generell normiert 😣

That's no joke. i remember thad day in my dad's DS when one wheel blow out on the highway. We didn't realise it until another driver drove his car next to ours and tried to explain us that we where driving on 3 wheels by doing signs. My dad stopped on the sideroad and was amazed to see that one of the wheels was just totaly flat. Changing wheel was also painless and quick with the hydopneumatic system.

Ähnliche Systeme wie ABC oder Magic Ride bei Mercedes oder die Hydropneumatik bei Rolls Royce von Citroen gibt es doch noch. Ist halt ziemlich teuer und wenn der Druckgenerator kaputt geht hast du ein Problem.

@@K0nst4nt1n96 mag sein , daß die Luftfedersysteme ähnlich funktionieren, aber das typische wiegende Fahrgefühl, wie es der GSA , der CX und die DS rüberbrachten , ist dort ehr nicht vorhanden , sondern diese Autos fahren sich ehr deutsch straffer . Bin selbst auch schon mit großen Audis und Mercedessen gefahren . Auf jeden Fall besser , als das was man heute sonst so bekommt, aber eben nicht dieses völlig entkoppelte Schwebegefühl , wie ich es aus unserem GSA und CX kenne , welche bei uns ein noch hoffentlich langes Leben führen.

la GS était une excellente auto, hélas avec une médiocre finition, car pour compenser le surcoût de la suspension, ils ont gratté un peu partout pour rester compétitifs par rapport aux autres constructeurs...
