That's the beauty of John Prine. You'll want to cry and laugh at the same time. From a literary standpoint, John Irving often does the same thing.

That is their real voices, John wrote it based on two characters in the movie Daddy and Them he was in with Billy Bob Thornton. He is recognised a great songwriter, sadly died of Covid in 2020 aged 73

John Prine is a lyrical genius, he could make you laugh, cry and really think. I've been a big fan of John since his eponymous album released in 1971. He survived neck cancer in 1998 which did change his vocal tone, but his songwriting was stronger than ever. His last album 'The Tree of Forgiveness' is wonderful. Give him another chance and listen to "Hello in There" and "Paradise". Both off his first album. Then give "When I Get to Heaven" off his last album a listen.

For me, this is a song I just come back to. I wasn't blown away by it at first listen. But, having a decent number of years under my belt as a married man, around listen #5, I found myself really loving it. It's just about the awkward'ies of 2 humans loving each other and being, well, human.

It's okay that you don't know who John Prine was. For many of us, his lyrics spoke our hearts and he was the soundtrack of parts of our lives. He wrote Hello in There when he was 21. I first heard it when I was 24 and it shook me to the core. He wrote Sam Stone shortly after that. And he and Steve Goodman and David Alan Coe wrote You Never Call Me By My Name (AKA The Perfect Country Western Song). As you can see from the comments here, John Prine's art lives on. For so many of us, he was Everyman's Shakespeare.

I bought that CD when it came out and it's all John Prine doing duets with female artists. Great album overall. Dude, that's their voices. She does a killer version of the old Johnny Horton song "Whispering Pines" on "The Horse Whisperer" soundtrack

John Prine was one of the greatest songwriters of all time. The song of his you might know is Angel from Montgomery. Back in the 80's Bonnie Rait had hit with it, been done by a few others as well.

His range in songwriting swings in a Huge arc. From “Please Don’t Bury Me” bringing chuckles, if not outright belly laughs” to the stark & harsh realism in “Sam Stone” his songs elicit emotional responses because his lyrics, music, & delivery are honest & genuine. When I first heard “Hello in There” as teenager, I thought it was a sad song, but at 65 I am profoundly affected after decades of experiencing life’s pleasure & pain. Btw, “in spite of” yourself stating you didn’t anticipate adding this one to your playlist, I enjoyed immensely watching your grin manifest throughout this song. If you enjoy wit as well as image artistry in a wordsmith, you’ll want to check out more John Prine regardless of whether you react to it or save it as guilty pleasure.

John Prine has undoubtedly written music you are familiar with. He wrote so many widely adopted songs, it is nearly impossible live in the US and not have heard some song he wrote multiple times. I have been a fan of him since around 1972 and followed his singing career but, he wrote songs for a living and his personal performances could never capture the scope of his song production. It is my understanding that he is a legend among writers. If that is the case, I sincerely hope the royalties are still coming in for his family. He devoted his life to song writing.

I wish he was still here writing and singing...even after his throat cancer that left his voice even more gravelly. You will end up with many songs on your playlist.

His stuff can be humorous and very profound at the same time. There will never be another ! He was discovered by Kris Kristofferson !

I was trying to think of why I didn't hear more country in my life but country music chalnnels were always separate from most mainstream pop in terms of radio and videos....unless it was a huge crossover like Shania Twain, Garth Brooks etc. Now we are in a segrated world on apps that only play whatever enre it thinks we want to hear.
