Two of my favorite performers and I don't understand why a novelty country song brings tears to my eyes... must be magic!

I think of the several versions of John and Iris doing this brilliant song on KZbin, this is the one I like best. The sheer warmth of their relationship here, and the love from their audience, makes it that bit extra special. RIP John: you overcame cancer only to be felled by this dreadful virus. You were a giant. Still, we should celebrate the fact that you were spared to live a full life, and managed to double the years lived by your dear pal, the magnificent Steve Goodman.

I love how red John Prine's face got when Iris Dement said "balls" like he couldn't believe he got her to sing it in the first place. I love it. Thanks for sharing.

It's so cute seeing these two still laughing and giggling while singing this after so many years and so many performances of it. Ask any musician and there's always one song (or more) they never get tired of playing live. RIP J.P.

I can't remember how many times I listened to "In Spite of Ourselves" and every time, I enjoyed it as much as the first time but I couldn't stop smiling as I listened and watched these two friends really have fun with it. Thanks for sharing this with us.

It's not just the lyrics but that accent of Iris' which really (to me) seals the deal. So very sad that we lost John. Once saw him in Tucson AZ. Saw Iris as well but not at the same show.

I love this song. I listen to it 3 or 4 times everytime I run across it. John and Iris are so good together. This is good but there are other versions of them singing this song that I like a little better. Even tho it's a great song, I'm not sure John is allowed to sing it up in heaven. LOL. I'm sure glad he wrote and recorded it before he departed. Miss you John. RIP. Thanks for the post. Ken T.

It has been said ; and this is so true with John Prine style of song , story and music , " Three chords and the truth." I believe John Prine proved that and more . Ok this song was a fictional prose but you gotta love it . It is a satire of life in general, the irony is just so genuine Cheers 03/09/2022

To anyone who hasn’t seen “Daddy and Them”, the movie this song was written for, it’s really worth a watch. It stars Billy Bob Thornton, Andy Griffith and of course John Prine when he still looked like John Prine (before cancer took his chin and most of his lower jaw).it also stars Jim Varney and Kelly Preston, who were both taken too soon by cancer as well. Hard to believe from the 5 leads I mentioned only one, Thornton, is still with us.
