It's written from the viewpoint of an old woman. Bonnie Raitt's cover is the most famous version of the song.

John Prine and Bonnie Raitt were very close friends and he is said to have written Angels from Montgomery for her to cover.

This whole debut album is that good. I'll put it on repeat sometimes when driving. And if you want lyrics check out Townes Van Zandt.

I wholeheartedly agree with another commenter. If you like lyric writers, listen to Townes Van Zandt.

The Bonnie Raitt version of this song is the one to hear. From Prine: Sam Stone, Souvenirs, Paradise, Hello in There, Spanish Pipedreams

This song has been covered by every female vocalist worth her salt. Deep, deep rabbit hole with John.

I‘ve been a John Prine fan for around 50 years and I really think you should do a deep dive into his music. He wrote so many notable songs-song that run the gamut from comical, like ”Illegal Smile” or ”It's A Big Old Goofy World ” to more angst-filled songs like the one you just listened to or ”Sam Stone”. One of my favorite stanzas is from his song ”The Sins of Mephisto” that goes something like this: ”Sally used to play with her hula hoops Now she tells her problems to therapy groups Grampa's on the front lawn staring at a rake Wondering if his marriage was a terrible mistake I'm sitting on the front steps drinking orange crush Wondering if it's possible if I could still blush.” Anyway, I‘ve just subscribed and look forward to more perspicacious reactions. Cheers!

Angel is many people's favourite Prine song but not mine. As with many artists I've never been able to pin down a favourite, it often depends on mood or life's circumstances. At this moment i'm waffling between Summer's End, Linda Goes to Mars, and I Remember Everything.

I only heard him when I came across a tribute to him on Stephen Colberts late show the day after he died from covid. It was Brandie Carlisle singing Hello in there. We were all in lockdown and the song hit me so hard I cried. Since then I've become a huge fan of his songs that span funny to tragic. If you can't appreciate his lyrics I don't know what you would appreciate. This from a huge Led Zeppelin fan. You need to check out hello in there Sam Stone and Summers end.

You want lyrics to make you cry? One of John Prine's first songs he wrote and sang....Sam Stone

Prine is one of the greatest songwriters imho. Idk if this would be a personal favorite but I understand why it would be for a lot of people. Sam Stone & Paradise are also some of his more famous songs. Actually, that entire first album is as close to perfect as you can make. I love his version of Clay Pigeons and Illegal Smile is a favorite summertime tune. I could ramble forever about him but thx for the video 😎✌️

I think fading was a useful recording tool in the pre-digital age; one could stretch or compress the song as needed post production. (Non-expert guess on my part).

The very first line, "I am an old woman", clues you in immediately as to his point of view for this great tune. I agree Bonnie Raitt did a great cover, that was very popular, but I don't agree it was better than the original. Music is subjective, so to each his own.

How the hell can a persON / go to work in the mornIN' / come home in the evenIN' / and have nothin' to say. Person, mornin' & evenin' are near rhymes with the rhyme is on the last syllable of these 3 lines. Nothin' also follows the rhyme pattern even though it falls in the middle of the line.

Many of his early studio albums were way over produced; the studio version of Sam Stone is almost unlistenable. Like many most are more familiar with his live recordings that sound much better.
