Lyrics:
I am an old woman named after my mother
My old man is another child that's grown old
If dreams were lightning thunder was desire
This old house would have burnt down a long time ago
Make me an angel that flies from Montgom'ry
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go
When I was a young girl well, I had me a cowboy
He weren't much to look at, just free rambling man
But that was a long time and no matter how I try
The years just flow by like a broken down dam.
Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go
There's flies in the kitchen I can hear 'em there buzzing
And I ain't done nothing since I woke up today.
How the hell can a person go to work in the morning
And come home in the evening and have nothing to say.
Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go

Nobody writes songs like this anymore... This is one my of favorite gems.. my dad loved John prine and I am grateful that he was able to hand this music down to me when I was younger. As a guitar player myself this is one of many songs I like to perform unchanged and untouched.

How lucky I am to hear the sounds of the human heart. So much that passes as life is absurd, inconsequential, tragic. But, from time to time, something sneaks in--something of abject beauty, of (at the same time) abject truth. Make me an angel that flies from Montgomery... Just give me one thing that I can hold onto.... Perhaps in Heaven I will have the opportunity to buy Mr. Prine a drink.

You will enjoy him . I've listen to him for almost 50 years. Hooked up a few months ago I was surprised to hear he'd passed away of that damn covid. But I found Steve Goodman. He was awesome. If he'd lived passed 36 he would have been up there with the greats. If you don't know him, look him up. I'm blown away!!!

I'm 31. Learned about Prine from my mom who saw him open a club for a bigger act when she was in high school. A few days ago my 15yo nephew asked me if I'd heard of an amazing, groundbreaking narrative songwriter called John Prine. His 9yo little sister is wandering around singing Iris's part in In Spite of Ourselves, not knowing what most of it means. Prine's music, and memory, will live on.

This was on the first John Prine record along with many of his best known songs. But all his records were filled with gems. I saw John Prine when I was about 12, and he did this song. He thought it was funny because this song was already kind of famous and he had never been to Montgomery. He couldn't have been more than 25. If you don't know his work well, check out all the albums.
