I've been thinking that, while multiple runways would be understandable for avoiding rear-end collisions by planes landing on the same runway (as I've been noticing on some of the videos featuring this new DLC), no such design requirements would be necessary with multiple planes sharing a single runway when taking off, even for a civilian airport servicing even large civilian aircraft (like on an aircraft carrier or military base scrambling squadrons of jets).

As a Pilot in training. I can tell you both the runway and ATC tower placement are a bit out of place. But it looks and works well so, no problems really. However, I'll just leave these points here so you can take them if you'd like. Overall awesome video, keep'em coming, looking forward to the airport at Verde Beach. Seeing as there's a large body of water near by, the wind would gather speed over that, and usually the airport will harness that and place the runway facing into that wind (Facing the water) so planes gain headwind when landing and taking off. This helps planes land at slower speeds relative to ground and take off earlier because of the added lift the headwind generates. Also The ATC should be placed in a area were it can see most if not ALL taxi ways and runways. Now-a-days, large airports have remote cameras and electronic maps with RADAR to track plane locations, but smaller airports need to have direct line of sight on what's happening everywhere else they could send aircraft on collision courses which is not good. Not many airports have multiple ATC towers but I'm sure some larger international airports do. That being said, Heathrow in London (one of the busiest in the world) only has one, all be it, VERY TALL ATC tower placed directly in the centre of the airport with a 360 window to view every part of the airport. TL:DR, runway faces water, 1 ATC tower placed in visual range of all taxiways and runways. Hope this helps! o7 P.S, I'm sad you can't rename the taxiways... :(

Thanks for teaching me about the effect of water! Just dropping by to say that yes ATC in the tower has radar usually, but for maximum efficiency (read, busy large airports) the tower still has to see all runways. Separation between planes is allowed to be significantly lower when they're both visual for a controller compared to only on radar. As such, remote fields here in Europe will probably be the first ones to be entirely remotely operated through camera's, not the bigger fields! And more sad we can't number our runways! Just a minor gripe though.

I'm not an airport planner but I am in pilot training and navigating airports is something we learn so I've picked up on some things with airport design. So first off I think your airport is pretty good given the vanilla assets in the game, and alot of what looks wrong is just with the way Paradox have decided to go about airport design. Now the new system is much better than the old, but there's still some things that aren't quite right. For example, actual control towers are much much taller than what are provided in the game and in real life taxiways aren't usually one way affairs. Now of course there's nothing you can really do about this, so some things that can make your airport look a bit more realistic. Now in real airports runways have way more exits and entrances than just one at the beginning of the runway and one at the end. A nice rule of thumb is atleast 4 exits and entrances, preferably 5. There are also 2 different types of exits, regular intersection exits and "high-speed" exits. Intersection exits are perpendicular to the runway and are usually at the beginning, end, and middle of the runway. High-speed exits on the other hand come off like a highway off ramp, say 45 degrees to the runway. This allows planes to exit the runway at a much higher speed and thus ensures smoother traffic flow. Now in real life runways aren't one way either, so you'll usually have one or two high speed exits for a given direction of the runway so to speak. These highspeed exits would be past the halfway point of the runway so that they are in prime position for slowing landing traffic. The great thing about this is that airport diagrams are made publicly available by the FAA, so you can just look up an airport diagram and see the taxiway structure to get a feel of the taxiway structure if my explanations are too confusing. I guess a good analogy is that runways are your collector roads (I'm counting airspace as the arterial) and taxiways are your local roads, and the same connectivity/hierarchy rules apply. Another quick thing is that your taxiways are too close to each other/ the runway. There is often a good amount of space between parallel runways and taxiways so that larger aircraft can pass each other without clipping wings. Again an airport diagram should give a good mental picture for what looks right. That's pretty much all that I think you can do without mods. The airports are always going to look a little off imo without a proper ramp structure. In reality I would divide airports into Runways, taxiways, and the ramp area, but that's probably asking a bit much from Paradox lol. Airports are miniature cities themselves and honestly probably need their own game to do them justice. I'm not an expert by any means but I have some experience, so hopefully you find this helpful!
@joshuam202 жыл бұрын
In this DLC I highly advise against adding anymore taxiways than necessary because it will absolutely confuse the ai. Unless paradox manage to fix it, the current issue is that the ai will take off from ridiculous places. Seen one use the very end of the runway taking off almost vertically. In general I feel like city skyline airports won’t be able to be true to life in numerous ways but we will do what we can.
@poofylepoofpoof95962 жыл бұрын
@@joshuam20 There is an easy solution to that and it's simply to reverse the direction of the taxiway so it can only be used as an exit. You still get the visuals and it works pretty well from my experience.

One thing I picked up from the Paradox Livestream: planes will pre-select their stand before landing, not just pick the first available one so its helpful to have queuing lanes so that planes trying to get into their stand don’t obstruct ones that are ready to take off. I'm by no means an expert on civil engineering or airport construction but from what I gather, airports are largely built around the limitations of the runway first and foremost. the orientation of the runways (and in some cases the minimum/maximum length) are highly dependent on a number of factors like the prevailing direction of winds, regional flight paths or local urban areas so as to avoid noise complains mostly (it's amazing how many people buy houses next to airports and then complain about the noise...) So once the runway location and orientation is in place, the rest of the airport slots in around it with the highest use facilities often closest to the runways and storage/hangars/admin facilities on the further edges.

Basically, people feel more secure flying at your airport thinking that there are people actually monitoring the planes and making sure there are no collisions. one pretty big thing is that runways should almost always be parallel to the concourse, take a look at indianapolis and jfk you will see what i mean. the runways form a box around the concourses. also, most int'l airports are either connected by just an auxillary highway, or by an auxillary highway and a parkway. in a big city it would be pure gridlock going through lights on a parkway to get to the airport. an auxillary highway that connects the main highway to the airport would fix traffic issues and the flow of traffic. great build and video btw!

That’s the “international” terminal. Then put the medium sized plane stands on the concourse to the right of main terminal (where the large plane stands currently are located), and that concourse would be for medium distance flights. The concourse to the left of the main terminal (where all the small plane stands are currently located) would be for regional and commuter flights.

I have a piece of advice I almost can't believe you haven't picked up on yet: high density commercial generates a TON of noise. Offices don't. If you want to keep residential uses from being overwhelmed by noise you should either only zone low density commercial (which is usually enough, density wise) or buffer with offices in-between the high density commercial and the residential. I hope that helps if you have future noise issues!

As a recreational private pilot of what I playfully refer to as a "flying washing machine", you don't need 2 air traffic control towers, in fact you really don't want two from an airport functionality POV. You don't want 2 different controllers trying to send instructions to the same aircraft, or an inability for the controll tower staff to communicate with each other effectively. It will lead to air disasters in a real life scenario. Also, it needs to be in a place where the controller has eyes on the planes at all times (on the opposite side of the runway would be ideal). Where you have it placed, they'll have blind spots. Having said that, large airports use CCV TV for areas of tricky viewing, you don't have to Mulligan your secondary terminal because it obstructs the view of the right wing of the main terminal if you *state* CCV TV is in place. The areas of commercial & residential that are under the approach path of the planes, you need to add height restrictions. It's not uncommon restrict heights to 10m or lower within 100m of the runway, then 20m or lower 100-200m and incrementally increase height from there.
@jimwanshue23762 жыл бұрын
I had hopes that they might include some parking facilities for us modless vanilla/console players. How can you build a huge international airport with zero parking? Even outside the US, not everyone will take public transit. I'd love to see a vanilla/console Traffic Manager DLC with parking facilities, basic lane management tools, and some additional roads. Maybe even throw in vehicle collisions and have tow yards to send trucks out, similar to the snow plows. I am happy to have larger capacity buses to deploy city-wide, even if they'll say "airport express" on them 🤷♂️. The new vegetation and tree replacement is pretty cool too.

37:10 Definitely need to make some sort of massive decorated transport hub in that area to bring all those lines together nicely. Airport line needs its own station for shuttle services!

Dear City Planner, I just found your channel today, because I was curious how the new DLC works. Now I am binge-watching you. Love your entertaining and informative videos. Greetings from your new subscriber from the middle of Germany :)!

One thing I would love the devs to add in the game at some point is some sort of vanilla transitions from highway segments to collectors/arterial roads so that they look cleaner. It's possible to do it modded, but in vanilla it never quite looks right.

Your control towers should be facing the runway, and also have a view of all taxiways. Ideally there would only be one tower, but game limitations might warrant having 3-4 spread out around the airport.

Dunno why but I got it into my head the DLC was out today, not the 25th. I've disappointed myself. Things like this act as a catalyst to just nuke an area and start over with a grand vision

Can't wait to see how realistic and cool Clearwater Counties airport will be. Lots of research. Remember your aviation community is here to help.

You built a wonderful viewing lounge to have a fantastic view of the planes landing & taking off.... now it's just a gas station view LOL Great vid once again, very entertaining and informative. Can't wait for this - it's been a hot minute hasn't it!

The larger bus is definitely a lifesaver. I thought it was part of a mod of some kind. Maybe I should look into buying this DLC as well...

Just started your videos this week. Primarily the videos from this guide. I wasn’t all that excited for the airport episode. But once I started watching it I got all excited. I have lots of ideas on airports that I’d like to try in game that I’ve seen at airports in person. One of the main ones is the Tampa international airport where the central terminal is essentially one giant roundabout that has monorail connecting over the roundabout to terminals on the actual airstrips depending on what airline you are using. I’d love to see if I could accomplish something similar.

You would absolutely never see an airport right next to a concentrating solar power plant. Same reasons that you'll get years in prison if you're found to have pointed a laser pointer at a plane.

How would civil engineers plan water pipes at a major airport? What factors play a role from an engineering perspective? Given the numbers of aircraft that transit through major airports, am I right in guessing you'd NEVER want to run pipes under a runway or taxiway?
@JediTev2 жыл бұрын
I love the airport you started, lots of great detail. A few things I would've done differently. I would've gone with a parallel runway instead of the diagonal. I get you wanted a long runway, but you still could've accomplished it and add capacity at the same time. Secondly, I wouldn't put the fuel tanks next to the terminals, put it out way away from the passengers, plus that area is prime real estate for plane stands. Thirdly, I would've built the highway to edge of the square and built on and off ramps to the collector road and then in the airport I would've set up the highway to come in, so when you get the tile, you just have to connect the highway. I've seen it done in real life. I'm so excited for this DLC, with the airport stuff the game gave in the past I've done what I could to make my airports look more like airports using mods. Now I can, I think I'm going to keep using the landing lights, it adds greater details.

I want to sit in the luxury lounge watching airports take off. Much more interesting than watching boring old airplanes.
@JavonWilliams292 жыл бұрын
I’ll continue to say this until I’m blue in the face. For next gen consoles, you can’t tell me they couldn’t add 1 to 2 more tiles for you to build on. I know 25 probably is too much but a 10 to 11 tile city, in my option, is more than enough for ps5 or xsx to handle. This airport DLC will take up 1 tile if you want to build a realistic international airport.

it's strange that they didn't add the monorail as an airport building extension.
@Bananaman4122 жыл бұрын
They don't add anything from DLC into other DLC, they are completely independent. That's why there are no transit hubs with monorails or trams
@KillexNZ2 жыл бұрын
@@Bananaman412 There is a monorail-metro-train transit hub. I think you're mostly right though, they seem to avoid it generally
@Bananaman4122 жыл бұрын
@@KillexNZ That one was added with monorails in the Mass Transit update, but that is the only example.
@danielaponte40542 жыл бұрын
Because people would bought the Mass Transit DLC would feel they were rip of is something from that DLC is in another
@Bananaman4122 жыл бұрын
@@danielaponte4054 I think it would be the opposite, people with the Airport DLC would be unable to use the monorail station. Either way, someone would feel cheated.

The air traffic controller/airfield management part of me is screaming at the screen! Lmao. If you want more than 1 tower, one will be the actual air traffic control tower which controls every aircraft once they leave the ramp. Other towers control movement on the ramps (area holding the aircraft stands) , so each ramp can have one.
@Walle5242 жыл бұрын
Yay! New DLC! May be wrong but think I spotted a taxiway connecting the large stands in the back to the taxiway parallel to the runway that’s in the wrong direction. The planes can leave but not land and access them.

All these years with airports in CS, and the whole time wanting the ability to either place the road (like tran stations) or at least upgrade the road to one way, you would think for this DLC they would have done that. Surely you and I aren't the only ones wanting a one way at the airport.

Small section of your commerical/office by the airport needs water. Would also consider adding some fire and police to simulate airport EMS as all airports have them to some degree. Otherwise, good build!

Phil: great series. I haven't watched them all, though, so I don't know if you took time to work on the various types of in-game City Tour services. If not, it might be nice after you finish the Airport DLCs to use City Tours as a nice wrap up to the tutorial by guiding visitors to all the cool places to visit in Tutoria.

I would totally feel a little unnerved flying into the airport due to the proximity of those smoke stacks on the final approach flight path. Since Airports have those three letter codes (O'Hare - ORD, National Airport in DC - DCA) can you make Tutoria's code TUT? Speaking of Airport food, I don't know how often you have to fly in or our of O'Hare, but supposedly Rick Bayless' Torta Frontera in Terminal 1 serves some of the Best sandwiches in the U.S. (It's all relative of course...)

Neighbourhoods have an awful tendency to creep in the direction of the runways so if you need to increase its length to accommodate larger airplanes or to increase safety you are strangled and there is a chance for planes colliding with buildings, I personally witnessed two major fatal accidents related to that while working at Congonhas, Sao Paulo, Brazil
