Hello Phil, fellow city planer here! Since you removed Myrtle street you should rotate the high school’s sport field 90 degrees so it doesn’t cut in to the hillside as much. That would help to get a less steep slope and also allow for a drainage ditch alongside :)

23:10 Houstonian here. When we need to keep our stadiums from flooding, we often surround them with ditches to redirect water flow, and put little foot path bridges over them. you can do this in vanilla with paths/roads to block the terrain brush from going too wild, and put a little set of flood control ditches around/near the high school

I think an exposed slope, like a scar on the earth, is beautiful? Of course not. I think it's realistic. At least, that's how it is here in Brazil. When large-scale earthworks are done for roads or construction, some slopes remain unfinished. Whether it’s to avoid encroaching on private property, reduce costs, or for other reasons, it’s common here. Leaving the slope exposed sacrifices beauty for realism. That’s it, my friend. But you're the one playing. We LOVE watching you play. If you want everything neat and perfect like a fairytale, go for it! I adore how your grids are so organic and resemble real cities. They’re not all straight and perfect like Barbie’s town... That’s just who you are and how you play. I’m fascinated by realism. When it comes to slopes, you prefer beauty, and that’s okay. Be happy because you bring us joy in your own way.

I vote for less smoothing. I think the side beside the church could be a retaining wall or even a rock face. Where you have placed the sports stadium I suspect it should be raised somewhat - so the soil dug from the high side fills in and raises the low side. then some more moderate smoothing could be applied. Loving your work.

13:07 Mining occurred in Morro Bay for over 80 years as Morro Rock was quarried with explosives. The height map you used for Morro Rock is its current size, which is only 2/3 the mass of its original size. Most of the height remains intact, with the majority of the mining occurring from the sides. This mining was particularly disruptive due to the fact it is a nesting site for the locally endangered peregrine falcon and a sacred site to the native Chumash people. At this time, direct access to Morro Rock is restricted; only the Chumash are allowed to climb the rock twice a year for a diving ceremony.

I think the hill by the church would require some type of erosion control. With the background of it being an old part of the city, the road would most likely have been widened at some point requiring them to cut into the hill and leaving that sharp drop-off. Possibly a retaining wall depending on the expense limits of the project. But some simple landscaping could also easily control the erosion and may have been requested by the church for aesthetic reasons.

We have a large park in our community that has multiple sports fields that serve a secondary function as flood drainage retention ponds. No reason why your high school sports stadium can’t serve the same ulterior purpose. Maybe the school district even got a rebate for engineering the stadium for this purpose, which is how they afforded to build it in the first place.

Stormwater Design Engineer here, all of the roads are curbed, catching the hill stormwater runoff. The track field would likely just have a couple of catchbasins and piped to the storm system in the curb line. Furthermore, the city would have planned for this knowing ponds aren't feasible, and a large regional basin would be created outside the city to serve as storage for all of the stormwater from the town.
@lukasr5867
@lukasr5867 Күн бұрын
Would you really need an artificial basin when you already have the pacific ocean at the lowest point of your city? Shouldn't that be able to take up any stormwater?
@clumsyturtle1706
@clumsyturtle1706 Күн бұрын
@lukasr5867 The lake and ocean can definitely take on the stormwater. Some places avoid this practice because the water is generally polluted, and so there is usually a treatment plant or a regional basin that can settle out pollutants before it goes into bodies of water. This is especially important if there are wetlands or important biolife in an area. It all depends on local regulations really.

To answer your smoothing out topography question. I think you should do what you want. Like I’ve never drove or hiked a path where the switchbacks were flat, you always do that but I don’t comment how ridiculous it is. It clearly makes you able to build the roads/paths up mountains easier and make them more realistic to you, so continue to do what you want. People watch you because you are unique, if you become someone that does what everyone wants then you will become a puppet like many others!

Locally to me, there are several gravel pits that are or have harvested old gravel banks along rivers. They do flood. The water is pumped into ponds, which can be decommissioned pits, to evaporate. Don't know if you'll see this. But a suggestion from my recent holiday to another state in Australia. Went to Brisbane, Queensland for two weeks and I love bus stops being integrated into old buildings and buildings of importance, like hospitals. Bus routes have their own underground network and above ground they have their own lanes (except on highways). Another thing is trains, trams and busses all being in close proximity of each other and bus routes running to train and tram stations. Or all three in one spot. Edit: Look up Helenseville, Gold Coast for a good example of the three in one station. Oh and *everything* is in walking distance.

I'd say slope it how you want. Thought I do love the rocky hills driving towards the Ozarks in Missouri. I think the first neighbor you built by the beach, probably the richest area, would want a dog park to take their purse dogs.

a comms tower on a cliffside by a street feels extremely CA that feels good. i wonder if it’s possible to create surfaces that would allow for the layers upon layers of sedimentary rock shoved into the sky by CA’s chaotic geology

At some point when the aggregate mine is done, it should be filled by the river that it is next to to form a recreational lake. I get that a lot near where I live, great for sailing clubs.

Some community ball fields are designed to flood, to serve as a retention basin. It keeps water out of the streets and people weren't playing in the rain anyway. They tend to have a drainage outlet though.

19:19 temporarily delete hawthorne street, push the ledge all the way to where the street would be (except for the part facing the top intersection - that part doesn’t need a retaining wall), then redraw the street so that a retaining wall spawns in.

I wonder how my fellow CPP fans feel, but watching you add trees to the farm, it doesn't look like you have the line tool and I think that's QoL tool that's OK for vanilla

Hi Phill, great episode, a great deal got accomplished ! Some feedback, could you lower the volume of the music when you're timelapsing ? I find it is a bit higher than your voice volume I am so excited for this series !

The terrain smoothing doesn't usually bother me, but my pet peeve is converting vast swathes of land to manicured grass 😅

In New York City the department of environmental protection is adding storm runoff tanks and storage that would blend under parks and sports fields. The cost is minimal in comparison to expected flood damage 😅

I live in Ventura, CA and I love Morro Bay Area. It’s funny watching you make a city on this map and I’m thinking, that’s not how it is…I know you’re not copying the city though, but it would be cool to see you pull from parts of it. There’s a little 9 golf course on the south side of the bay (along with the smaller town of Los Osos). Can’t wait to see this town grow and if you decide to make a CA freeway run through… Also, love the three homes on the beach, feels historic.

I mean, its alright to smooth it here, the main criticism of smoothing I have is next to roads and train tracks, because even if its dangerous and often needs metal nets, it happens sooooo often, at least in Central Europe.
