Meanwhile on the Isle of Wight, they were running the modified 1938 stock until they simply couldn't run any more! By the time the 484s were announced to replace the 483s, only two of them were usable, with the rest in various states of disrepair and repair. Credit to the engineers at Ryde, they kept the '38s going until the very end. I'll be quite interested to see how the Epping Ongar Railway goes about getting the two 483s they purchased up and running again.

ah yes, the D78 stock, when first introduced. I think I will have some film of these. Also the 1983 tube stock on the Jubilee Line - these have now been withdrawn but happily I do have some film of them on youtube (internal and external views) and there is at least one more film to come which will show them.
@riverhuntingdon66599 жыл бұрын
Sad, but informative film. When they start withdrawing a class of stock it's usually damaged/defective ones that go first, quite often stripped of components. Sad to see this unit actually arriving under its own power though. The older views of the pre-refurbed C stock brought back memories too. As time proved, not even the example very expensively rebuilt after 7/7 was spared the scrapyard. They should've kept that one at least.

If you want the nearest 'tube train' station then its probably Stanmore. However if you just mean 'London Underground' station then you can see Northwood in the video - both right at the start and when the low loader lorry drives past it. This station is on the Metropolitan line and in Zone 6, but since this uses subsurface trains and not tube trains so its NOT a 'tube' station.. I filmed from the footbridge just beyond the southern end of the station & a road bridge a little further south.

Very interesting. I thank you for sharing this. Here in New York, there would have been some slight differences in the procedure. Primarily, the cars would probably first have been taken to a maintenance facility where they would have been de-powered and stripped of anything useful or hazardous, like batteries, florescent tubes, and window glass. Then they would be towed to the scrap track by diesel locomotive...there are a few vids of this...

Also, those cars don't look very old....

The rolling stock was from the late 1960's. The disposal of the old trains was carried out by a specialist company. I suppose that it means that all costs were known in advance so should an issue arise then its for the company scraping the trains to worry about - not the transport operator.
@iandale36748 жыл бұрын
+citytransportinfo Thanks. yeah, New York is also trying to dispose of 1960s equipment. But we had some stuff from the 70s that was in even worse shape. As a result, they had to keep about 280 cars from 1964-65- the R32s if you've heard of them. Anyway thanks for recording and sharing this video!

On the District Line tge Richmond and Wimbledon branches are also shared, although on the latter the mainline trains do not normally call at intermediate stations. The Bakerloo Line north of Queens Park also shares with mainline trains. As far as I can recall all LT trains have air whistles. No working C stock trains have been retained - finding space and finance for even a 4 car set being the reason why. Two single cars are preserved. @CitytransportInfoplus8 жыл бұрын
a side swipe is when vehicles impact each other on the sides but not at the front or back. The damage to this train was only at one end and very low down. As I understand it the damage was sufficient to prevent the sliding doors used by passengers from opening or closing and was caused because two trains moving in the depot got too close to each other. The damage could have been repaired but because this fleet of trains was about to be replaced it was decided that a repair would not be cost effective.

Does the London Underground run on a separate line to the rest of the UK rail system? Does it use the same track gauge or a different gauge?
@CitytransportInfoplus3 жыл бұрын
Some very good questions, the answer is complicated. First, the easy bit: yes all London Underground trains use the same track gauge as the 'mainline' railway system. re: interworking: right from the early days when the trains used steam locomotives there was interworking. The Metropolitan Railway was just one of the many privately owned railways here in the UK. Nowadays Bakerloo line and District line trains include sections where London Underground trains travel on tracks owned by Network Rail whilst part of the Metropolitan line is served by 'National Rail' (Chiltern Railways) diesel trains. In most cases these are jointly operated services so that passengers can catch any train, depending on their destination and which comes first! North of Queens Park - Harrow & Wealdstone Gunnersbury - Richmond East Putney - Wimbledon* Harrow On The Hill - Amersham *(Nowadays the South West Railway trains do not call at these stations, and since 1994 the route has been owned by London Underground, even though the signals are still owned and controlled by Network Rail) Plus there are places where London Underground trains travel on their own tracks alongside mainline trains. Parts of the Circle, District and Metropolitan lines travel on the same tracks but they use trains which look very similar (S Stock) and this is nothing special. Technically the S stock are subsurface trains - NOT tube trains. They are far too big to fit through the small 'tube train' tunnels. But in west London the Piccadilly line (which uses the small 'tube' trains) shares tracks with the District line (Ealing Common station) and the Metropolitan line (Rayners Lane - Uxbridge) Also, the Northern line north of East Finchley and most of the Central line east of Leyton were built as 'steam train' services with Underground trains taking over in the 1940s. But goods (freight) trains still ran until the 1960s. All of these jointly operated services have operated for over 100 years! This web page on my website has more information. citytransport.info/Shared.htm

The London Underground and the UK's national railway share tracks at this location? Also this will probably be Singapore's C151 MRT trains in a few years' time; they have decided to replace the trains instead of refurbishing it, though I'm hoping they can save a few for preservation or at least consider refurbishing the better-performing ones. Not keeping my hopes up though.

The C stock were Subsurface trains, they were approximately the same size as main line trains and operated on three lines, all of which were originally served by steam trains - Circle, Hammersmith & City and the District line service between Wimbledon and Edgware Road. The Piccadilly is a tube line which uses much smaller trains - at present the 1973 tube stock. These will be scrapped in a few years from now, when the next generation of tube trains are introduced (estimated mid 2020's, exact date remains to be seen!)

If I had a big piece of property and had the money I would buy all the trains up and make a museum out of them

They aren't really getting scrapped some D stock units were taken to be refurbished into class 230 trains, but in Hainault depot there's some scrapped D stock and 1972 and 1973 trains but those are unpainted versions which are hard to find (Idk why they are at a central line depot edit: they also got some other old trains from 1960 but they got graffited.

I am baffled about the trains at Hainault depot, especially the subsurface trains as they cannot get to here - they are far too big to fit through tube train tunnels and all connections with the mainline railway have now been removed.

Since it still works, i would send it to the isle of wight so they could modify it to replace the 1938 stock they have there

Someone tell me why the LU has 4 rails 2 for the wheels 1 for the 500 volt live rail and 1 neutral rail. The LU: could save alot of Money by only having 3 rails. The return current would then flow via the wheel rails. Most european Etrains use the 3 raill System.
@CitytransportInfoplus9 жыл бұрын
+Graham Pinkerton The only steel wheel railway system which I can think of that use 4 rail is Milan Metro Line 1. From what I remember, the rest of the Milan system uses overhead wire
@100SteveB8 жыл бұрын
+Graham Pinkerton It is to stop corrosion of the steel tunnel sections, when using a running rail for the return path (Neutral), you get a great deal of current leakage into the ground. This leakage of current causes galvanic corrosion of the steel tunnel sections. Having a dedicated rail for the neutral makes it much easier to insure total electrical isolation from the ground.

that train at 2:15 is a new stock from 2010. One of my least favorite, i think 2009 are better with platforms and platform edge doors

Do you have some footage of it being smashed apart for scrap and sliced with cutting torches? That is always the best bit!
@CitytransportInfoplus7 жыл бұрын
alas, no, I've never filmed a train being cut up at a breakers' yard.
@PreservationEnthusiast6 жыл бұрын
ND78S There's nothing like a good scrapping. The way they would probably scrap this, is to smash the shit out of the superstructure with a grab crane, and the bogies and frames would be sliced into small pieces with cutting torches.

Can’t believe it’s cheaper or better to transport the old C stick by road 6 lorry journeys for that train when you could couple another six and haul them by rail and it would be more eco friendly

Where was the side swipe damage? Looks ok In the video??

very low down on one side and barely visible - some of the passenger doors could not slide open

Is the damage visible? I couldn't see anything

it was on one side, near the bottom - and although not major it prevented some sliding passenger doors from opening

yes but the Rotterdam metro is relatively new and everything was built to be compatible. London's system is very different...

thanks. The worst unsteady footage was edited out. This includes a moment when the camcorder in my right hand almost completely lost sight of the train! I would have used a small tripod on the bridge parapet, but I was concerned in case I knocked my camcorder and it accidentally fell over the edge! One day I'll get myself a chain which I can attach to so that if this did happen I would not either lose it or pose a safety risk to anyone (or a train) below the bridge
