Honestly it was fascinating to see the way Inca lost: they had slightly more population and better economy than Spain, but they simply had terrible naval strategy. Through the entire competition Spain had more advanced ships, produced more of them and amassed them in one place instead of spreading randomly. Through the Great Inca-Spanish War, Inca were constistently incapable of using their land superiority because of insufficient navy - they briefly taken two northern cities but *couldn't maintain landing operations because of bad navy*. This entire conflict to me is similar to German invasion on France in 1940 where both sides had similar numbers with slight Allies advantage, but Germany won because of much better doctrinal use of modern weapons (tanks mainly). On civdata.com/ you can check AI personality biases for civ5 leaders and see how Spanish AI puts much more emphasis on navy than Inca, that proved crucial on this map.

The most important distinction is that when Spain finished its southern probing and invaded London, Inca lacked the infantry, or any melee unit really, to do anything besides sit there and use rocket artillery, unable to contain the Spanish advance in the same way that Spain contained the Inca when they took the northern cities

I think the result can be narrowed down to 4 options from the start. The map doesn't give the same conditions to all 6 civs on each side: the ends have less competition, which would be an advantage for a player, but the AI simply acts passive. The other 4 civs on each side are otherwise balanced in they're starting situation, but the AIs 2nd from the ends find themselves between a passive civ and an equal civ, whereas the civs in the center are between 2 active civs. Initially, center civs may respond by building up their military faster, even conquering many cities. A player would then be able to turn their larger empire into a great advantage, but the AIs instead fall behind in technology and happiness. Lastly, the civs on the ends are not equal. Paris almost has enough room for another city, but the AI finds that there aren't good enough locations at the start, and Spain takes the only opportunity France had. England and Korea are similarly boxed in, but manage to settle earlier, likely because they aren't, in the long term, as concerned about losing the culture game by having more cities. Songhai actually has more space than the others, and they are the only edge civ to settle two more cities. Into the details, the two contenders for the end of the game on the south-west side should've been the Celts and the Austrians. The Celts were indecisive about their first city, got into a war with England, and found themselves blocked out by the Inca, who take advantage of that situation. The Austrians are right next to the strongest edge-civ, Songhai, who is typically a more aggressive AI than the other edge-civs. After their last declaration of friendship expires, Austria enters a difficult war that could've been won if the Inca hadn't attacked right then. The rest is a trivial, if prolonged, exercise for the Inca. On the north-western half, Brazil miscalculates their forward settling. The borders between Busan and Onondaga are too tight, and the Iroquois actually settle, despite Brazil targeting them with a forward settle. Brazil is forced to put their third city as far away as it could possibly be. This seals the Brazilian coffin, as the AI does not manage the military positioning in this disjoint civ, and Korea does them dirty. Through this, the Iroquois and Indonesians are also disjoint, giving easy pickings for the Spanish, who otherwise have a game just as I laid out before. The edge civ is passive, the center civ is packed in too tight, so the 2nd from the edge takes everything. The important part is that Spain can actually be, politically, pretty quiet, while still being very influential. At 0:36, Austria and Spain both have 4 cities, one more than anyone else. Spain maintains a pop advantage, while Austria fights an exhausting war against America, at which point they eventually win a marginally higher population. Spain then takes the opportunity to take Sao Paulo because Korea destroyed Brazil's army, forcing them to invest in a new, now outdated one. This isn't about the Spanish AI being smart, really. Spain stumbled into a game where they could play to their positional advantages. By acting naively a little more peaceful, they became effectively more opportunistic. By taking only when it was easy, Spain could maintain a more progressive civ, presumably building more buildings sooner, instead of units. The Inca moved much faster, militarily. This is not a good thing, but it makes sense. They were a center civ, so they prioritized their military. They could defeat their neighbors, so they did; they need more units, they build them; they have more units, they use them. This cycle kept prioritizing building units. Spain's game prioritized building not as many units, or not as frequently. It's interesting to see this. Think about not just why things happened: the sequence of events, but why that was the sequence of events over another. This is interesting especially with AIs because they're sort of cute, how they mess up and fumble around, accidentally winning because they were really actually were supposed to win.

There was a distinct moment at around 2:40 where the Incas should have taken Paris; at a moment when Spain was still pretty weak, it would have allowed them to bring land troops over to the east side easily and wear out the Spanish over time. It seems like the AI really doesn't like naval invasions though lol

0:13 The mini-war between Brazil and the Iriquios to see who could cock-block the other the most is enjoyable af to watch RIP Austria, caught with its pants down during its war with Songhai, with half of its cities taken before the AI could even react. Spain v Inca was enjoyable to watch. Both sides actually had half the map, and there was no inherent disadvantage or weakness between the two; it was all up to civ bonuses and how the AI manages things. Though if anything, the fact Spain managed to suckerpunch Inca into oblivion is impressive, considering that they didn't take Paris until way later after Inca already unified their side, and Rio De Janero/Seoul rapidly exchanging hands really hurt the population of those two cities, hampering the overall production of the coastal cities by a lot, and giving Inca and advantage. Still, the probing around south at 5:00, combined with a solid push on London and the lack of melee units from Inca (all they could do was sit there and bomboard the cities with rocket artillery, without being able to push the Spanish out) really sealed the deal here. I really liked the paradrop by Spain at 4:31, and I wished that Spain would have done more of that. It could have been a very viable strategy here, what with how contested the sea is.
