Civ VI Basics: How To Keep Your Citizens Loyal

After getting the Rise & Fall or Gathering Storm DLC for Civilization VI, a new mechanic that might be tricky to grasp is loyalty. Luckily, it's not as hard to manage as some of the other mechanics, such as amenities. Be sure to keep your cities close together and well fed, and have a few governors on standby for dire situations. Your people will gladly stay and help build an empire that will stand the test of time!

I have just got both dlcs. I know im late but I have not been playing civ that long and was enjoying vanilla too much. One thing that annoyed me was the forward settling....and i actually grew tired of being to expand so easily... sounds weird but the lack of opponent in expansion actually made the game more boring. My only worry about the dlc is - loyalty and strategic resources. You have helped me a lot over my loyalty worries. It seems, with consideration and care you can still expand within reason...and it stops the computer getting in right next to your third city ruining the flow. I still have concerns about how you can run a miltary on a handful of bits of metal scavenged from mines .....but i guess well see how that works as we go.

Notable for people who only have rise and fall, Victoria does not give any loyalty boosts, instead Amani (The diplomat) has the loyalty promotion. This has very little synergy with putting Amani in city states, but it is worth noting.

I was playing as russia capturing one of chinas cities. The citizen was 7 for a few turns that randomly hopped to 20 in one turn. Couldn't maintain it so I lost the city after having a few troops walk to their death because I forgot about their puny existance. I don't understand loyalty.

If a modder were thinking of making a new civilization; what new ability related to loyalty would you like to see?

Religious fervor: loyalty boost from having a city following your religion is tripled for cities you own/occupy and the loyalty penalty is doubled for foreign cities also following your religion.

When revolting, I initially thought the rebels will spawn a new civilization that will compete with yours. Sadly, you only ever get the default rebels. I know it's a difficult task, but I'd kinda love to see a new empire rise from the ashes of a different one, so to speak.

I once played a no turn limit domination only game on the largest map setting and as many civs as possible. It was the only time I've seen multiple free cities group together that actually remained 100% loyal to themselves, it was kind of like a little Switzerland or something right in-between multiple civs in the middle of their continent that no one dared to conquer.

How does the loyalty vs. dark age mechanic work? I lost two cities to getting a dark age, but not sure why. Were the cities not that loyal at the impact of dark age?

Cities produce less loyalty pressure during dark ages, which is probably why they rebelled

And what to do when you conquer city nr 1 and then continu attack on city nr 2 and before its taken city nr 1 loses loyalty and leaves you susurrounded by enemies troops and barbarians at the same time?

Built a city on a -8 loyalty during a golden age. I wasn’t worried, had a governor and governor loyalty card as well as garrison loyalty and enough money to buy a monument. Everything’s peachy for a few turns and then I hit a dark age and now I’m literally on a ticking time bomb. I’ve increased its population, tried placing another city kinda nearby but it’s a hole in a ring of civs and city states. 24 turns til rebellion, 31-54 turns til next era. Thinking of chopping out a theatre district, buying an amphitheater and pushing out a circus and some entertainment complexes
