Hadn't played Maori for ages but watching this video I got inspired. Recently finishing playing a single player on highlands map. It was a whole lot of fun. My skill and knowledge have increased a lot since I last played them (picked up a lot from your videos) and was able to dominate the game too easily.

The fact thst you didnt settle one tile down on ur 4th city for the +5 harbor pissed me off more than it should have

great video as always. why not settle the fourth city one tile below it? you could get a +5 harbor and the tiles surrounding it are pretty good

If I settled Te Pokohiwi one tile further south, then the city of Kawhia would not be a legal settle anymore because it would be too close to another city. That's why I settled my fourth city where I did - to leave room for my sixth city.

Herson can you drop the England game please!

Alright, can do. I won't be able to upload for a few days because I'm in the process of switching internet service providers, but I will upload the vod of the England game from my naval guide when my internet is online again.

Why did you put a harbor on the 1 tile lake?

The cost of districts scales with the number of techs and civics you have completed, so you want to place down districts as early as possible. I only had harbors unlocked in this city at this point, so I elected to go for a harbor. This is important in order to maximize the number of districts I have completed for the Pen Brush and Voice golden age dedication (+2 culture and +1 gold per district), as well as to increase the number of districts I have completed so I can more easily discount other districts (search "Civ VI district discounting", it's a hidden mechanic). In the early game, the extra trade route capacity granted by the lighthouse allows me to grow my cities thanks to the extra food and prod it grants, as I'm sending my traders to a city state containing the governor Amani. In the Better Balanced Game mod, Amani has a passive effect that grants +2 food and +2 prod to any city that sends a trade route to a city state she's assigned to, so the extra trade route capacity the harbor grants me is pulling its weight. Furthermore, as the game goes on, the value of a trade route capacity scales extremely well. Look at the trade route I sent at 2:58:57 - that's the value of a lighthouse in a city with no workable water tiles. 6 food, 8 prod, 38 gold, 4 science, and 2 culture per turn.

Can I ask why you chose pb&v instead of free inquiry for the first golden age? You had like 20 science worth of adjacency and that’s without the double adjacency card. Surely that’s more valuable than 10 culture and 5 gold?

On turn 30, I actually only have 10 adjacency from harbors. 3 in my cap, 3 in Te Pokohiwi, 2 in Kapiti, and 2 in Whanganui. That means I'd get 10 science from Free Inquiry. I have, at that time, 5 districts finished - 4 harbors and 1 government plaza. That's 10 culture and 5 gold from Pen, Brush & Voice. Pen, Brush & Voice's culture yield will greatly outscale the science yield from Free Inquiry as I get more districts down, such as campuses, theater squares, etc. There's also many more prominent power spikes in the civics tree than in the science tree during this stage of the game - governor titles, envoys, useful policy cards, and most of all, Mercantilism. As we're playing Maori, we gain +1 production on all unimproved woods and rainforests in our empire upon reaching Mercantilism, and another +2 at Conservation. Therefore, having high culture early on is extremely important, as it gets us to those power spikes faster. Once we have all of that extra production, we can catch up our science fairly easily.
