Civil Consciousness Club Discussion: "Lithuanian-Ukrainian Heritage: Lessons from History for the Present" with Serhii Plokhy.
A renowned Ukrainian historian from Harvard University will join us for a live lecture organized by Ukreate Hub: what are the parallels between Ukrainian and Lithuanian history? At what crossroads does Ukraine stand today, and how is this determined by its geographical location and history?
Serhii Plokhy is a Ukrainian historian, professor of Ukrainian history, and director of the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University. He is known for his research on the history of Ukraine and Eastern Europe and for authoring many popular academic books that make complex historical topics accessible to a broad audience.
One of Serhii Plokhy landmark works, book "The Gates of Europe," traces Ukraine's history from ancient times to the present day, highlighting its crucial role in European history. Ms Serhii analyzes the cultural, political, and military events that have shaped Ukraine as a "gateway" between East and West. The book provides valuable insight into Ukraine's historical significance and its role in contemporary international affairs, exploring the nation's struggle for identity, freedom, and statehood.
Moderator: Maksimas Milta - the Ukraine Country Director at The Reckoning Project, leading efforts to collect testimonies of Russian war crimes and ensure accountability. He is an Associate Expert at the Eastern Europe Studies Centre and a former ReThink.CEE Fellow at the German Marshall Fund. Maksimas has also worked at the European Humanities University in Vilnius. He holds an MA in Political Science from Vilnius University and an MA in European and Russian Studies from Yale, where he was a teaching assistant to Prof. Timothy Snyder.
