Civil War review by Raphael Motamayor at SXSW. In theaters April 12, 2024
Civil War delivers a challenging, thrilling, heart-pounding movie about the importance of journalism in times of conflict, about how easily we become desensitized to violence when we’re living through it. Writer-director Alex Garland gives the story the scope and visual style of a massive summer blockbuster, but keeps the focus on the journey the characters take and how war affects them.

Talking apolitically about a movie that is about a civil war? How do you do that if youre not flat out ignoring most of the situation? Civil war is one of thr most political situations and ignoring that is kinda weird and pointless. It would be like reviewing musicals and never mentioning music.
@marcus_ohreallyus
@marcus_ohreallyus 2 ай бұрын
@@Oksa_L it's still a movie, with filmmaking, acting and musical scoring. Alex Garland's artistry could get lost in the politics. In a real civil war there would be more factions as well as foreign military involvement.
@thenathanimal2909

No foreign military with a brain would intervene in a modern US civil war. The capability and cost of force projection is beyond all of Europe and China. 80% of their troops would be at the bottom of the Pacific and Atlantic before they got within 1000 miles of our coast. Mexico and South America can't even control their own territories. Canada would be best served by simply sitting on the sidelines.
@krystalneko4094
@krystalneko4094 2 ай бұрын
More factions yeah, foreign military nah except for like one or two experimental expeditionary or advisor forces at best and that's still a big if. This country is geographically impossible to conquer from the outside and probably inside too and we're surrounded by ocean and significantly weaker countries. Honestly if/when we do break apart Canada and Mexico might not exist for very long afterwards, the amount of refugees alone would cripple both their economies multiple times over and their defense capabilities are like a fraction of a fraction of ours, so whatever major factions exist would easily be able to solo them if they need more territory

You are mistaken on multiple points. We don't know whether Antifa was massacred, or the committed the massacre. Gas was $300 in the middle of a war zone where almost certainly digital transactions would have broken down and one faction's tender would not be accepted by the other faction, meaning converting from one currency to the other would be very expensive. Civilians being bombed by air strikes happened after the war broke out. Sub factions would have not caused the war, but been a by-product. Only the 3 major factions would have been integral to the outbreak of civil war.

California is pissed because a right wing demagogue gets a third term and screams, "this is is unconstitutional" and secedes. Then, Texas being a staunch unconditional supporter of the 2nd Ammendment, recognizes the tyrranical nature of this third term president, urges its citizens to raise arms against said government and unites with California to overthrow this tyrranical president. The cause isn't the subject of the movie. Intentionally. You can safely assume that there was a lot of journalism covering that exact topic when it broke out, but some journalists have to cover different things. We follow journalists who'se not trying to figure out the cause, and we, the audience, can safely assume that the reason is known to them, and unimportant for the film.

Its justifiable though, since the angle this movie takes is that of common people and not the ruler and most people during such turbulent era tend to only have scarce info of the wider conflict.

@@Howtohandlemebaby8173no lol propaganda is alive and kicking. Real war journalism showed everything- the whole picture. Modern “journalism” propaganda is the appropriate term. Cuts out and removes all parts that may make you sympathetic. They skew everyone perception and that’s not journalism, it’s programming.

Field journalists are the lifeblood of the trade. People like Ernie Pyle, and Joe Galloway come to mind. But since the immergence of networks they have taken a different route and will do whatever the highest bidder says to report. It's a shame to see such a legacy sullied by division politics and greed.

To be fair, most journalists do a great job reporting on what is going on. Most big Media companies don't employee journalists. Most of them either do news hours (fluff) and punditry (opinion as fact). And as a result people confuse real journalism working for small news papers and self employed digital media outlets, with legacy Medias slide into narratives to shape opinion.
