Betty Meggers opinion reminds me of how we only know what we are currently aware of. Looking forward to when we learn more about our history from the pre-Columbus era. Lidar has really been a wonderful addition to archeology.

That was fascinating. I happen to be right in the middle of a DVD course from the Great Courses that explains the archaeological and anthropoligical history of the native peoples of South America. It was prepared in 2012, I believe, and there was already evidence emerging of Amazonian civilizations that even had significant influences on the mountain and coastal peoples of the west, such as the Incas and those who preceded them. It will be exciting to see what Amazonian discoveries await us in the years to come.

this video is incredibly insightful and well put together! i really enjoyed the way it highlighted the diverse cultures. however, i have to say, while the focus on indigenous practices is important, it sometimes feels like the narrative overlooks how modern influences are shaping these communities. what do you all think?

Indigenous would be the correct term. Native refers to where you were born, and has been misused for years. Indigenous refers to where your people were born. I personally feel that Amazonian would be just as accurate. But I cannot personally speak to the accuracy of that term within the scientific community. Very new to your channel. I am enjoying it immensely

Another YT creator calls pre-European indigenous peoples “The Ancient Ones”. I think it’s respectful.
@stephenbrand56612 күн бұрын
That seems like the kind of label you get when other people think you live like their ancient ancestors.

We are so rudimentary, I wish we would leave things alone till we have technology needed to properly record events. Only very recently have we been using laser topography for a relatively accurate depiction. LIDAR too is in its infancy but that is also exciting and crucial.
@EmanuelsWorkbench7 күн бұрын
You can always call the native peoples the "first people" as they were there first, before the arrival of Europeans.

I knew a guy in Brazil who made a living mining gold from the silt in a river that fed into the Amazon. He probably polluted the river water greatly. It was very dangerous and he slept with a shotgun and pistol on his boat anchored in the middle of the river.

Whilst I understand why historians, ecologists and the like might've been concerned about claims of Amazonian civilizations fueling modern day destruction of the rainforest, it's not like the people wanting to destroy the rainforest for more pasture, farmland for soy and animal feed, timber and mining, care all that much about whether there was history of complex human habitation there or not. If there wasn't then they'd just justify it as necessary for existing human needs or present it as a developmental project with state approval, if there was then they'd do that and maybe say "well people in the past also tranformed significant parts of the rainforest, so why can't we" as an additional point. That is to say the debate wouldn't have been swayed to either side, and each side already knows what conclusion they want so they'll just use it as an additional justification (just to clarify I favour the environmentalists as should any sensible person and don't believe burning the rainforest vs protecting it are equal positions).
