Settle between Lake Victoria and the Cotton, you'll get Lake Victoria, 2 new luxuries (Cotton and Spices) Cattle, Wheat, Sheep, Deer, and you'll be adjacent to a mountain (I think) and be on a river. Plus you'll be farther away from Indonesia, and get a Warrior to block that mountain pass so he has to go around. After that, settle between the deer and salt tiles on the three river crossing. You'll get 2 deer, horses, Incense, and a new luxury salt, and you'll have a lot of river tiles. Not amazing, but a pretty good city. Definitely get the Lake Victoria spot first though.

Poland is defenitely my all-time favorite civilisation in Civ V. They can excel at any victory type, but they are an absolute beast when going domination. Extra policies to fill up your lack of culture when conquesting is a massive benefit. But the best thing about Poland is the Winged Hussar. Upgrade them from landknechts and you have deadly cavalry that can heal on demand without movement cost. Just storm your oponent and heal along the way by pillaging. The ducal stables allow your already strong cavalry to be even stronger, especially when combined with alahambra/brandeburggate/autocracy. Your hussars get 75 xp + a free promotion from alahambra. It gets even better when you upgrade them to helicopter gunships. The bottleneck is that they become anti tank guns first, but its worth the wait. I generaly use this time catch up on science. Poland is perfect for mid to late game warfare. You have plenty of time to build a stable empire until you get the winged hussars. Once you have them you can absolutely swarm the map, especially on pangeae. All in all Poland is an absolute beast.

Glad you came back to Civ V. I bought BE before ever playing Civ V and recently bought Civ V and been playing a lot of that while watching your vids. Was a very Civ IV bias player, but after playing Civ V after all the expansions have been added and alll that, I actually love it. Look forward to watching this series.

oh my goodness. directly northwest to lake victoria is a crazy good spot. A natural wonder and three different luxuries in range. Plus a ton of grassland. thats gonna be a huge city....

Indonesia sometimes goes super aggro early on once they get their UU replacement for swordsmen. I've seen them forgo a second city and any wonders in favor of their Kris swordsmen. Just something to keep an eye out for, since you have some rough terrain between your capitols.

Not to mention moving up another tile would have meant settling on a hill, which would help with the actual building of the wonder. This was earlier than the average time I start yelling at the screen but I believe in you Quill!

He also would have been 2 tiles from a mountain, close enough to go for Machu Pichu or Neuchwanstein. Just another benefit to add to the list of things Quill missed, I suppose.

Yay, a new civ5 series! Really great start there - personally I would have wasted the first turn and moved onto the hill there to get next to the desert ( and I love hill city tiles in civ5), but I think the start works out either way. Will be really amazing if you manage to snag Lake Vicky.

he has a very small change of getting his own religion, in fact I would say none. Unless he steals a worker from somewhere he will have to decide on a worker or a shrine and since he is going for a city by lake vic not building a worker 1st will cause all kinds of issues with unhappiness.

Right away... you won't be able to build Petra in Warsaw because you're not on or next to the desert. But if you build a city on the desert hill you were mentioning within range of Lake Victoria, that would be an ideal Petra location.

Quill, you definitely should update the UI mod. With this version of the game, the old version of the mod doesn't allow you to access the world congress screen on demand as the button vanishes. The mod-maker made an update soon after, and if you install it now you should prevent any problems.

I would have personally started my city on one of those two hills above the river. Like, okay you're starting next to one flat desert tile, but you'll be on a hill and receive extra defense and production, as well have access to more hills and be close to a mountain to build mountain requirement wonders.

This is such a good start, and quill really sucks at micro managing. He should have gotten the shrine earlier, he should have worked the 2 hills instead of the 2 incense when building the setteler, and he should settle 1 tile to the Left of lake victoria, it would give him the best city yield IMO

Just curious as to why not move the starting city up onto the hill on th left just across the river from where you settled? that way you get defensive bonus as well as building petra since its next to desert? you would still get gems deer if needed. Im still a noob at this game so forgive me if the answer is obvious. Thanks!

1:04 I like Poland for two reasons: 1: The amazing UA 2: The really good starts you often get. Shame no salt though (i think they have a slight salt start bias me thinks). The first win i got was with Poland. Captial was at 40 at the end of the game...

Desert incense could be very strong. I’d go with two scouts then a shrine in this start. Almost guaranteed to get the desert faith tenant to get a religion quickly.

turning the goody huts off would be a great equaliser. When you have them on, you or the AI might get undeserving bonuses. Its probably harder on the player thus being more fun and allowing a harder start. Also since you have lots of desert in the north you should try to rush a settler and build a city on the northern river, get some belief and get the desert folklore pantheon. Combined with Petra and the flood planes you will have very good desert tiles.

But scouting has some skill to it as well. Good players will maximize their revealed tiles. Not to mention that's a huge hit to the Shoshone. Ruins are the reason scouts are so critical early, you will just soar past the monument first players every time.

Luxury resources, as I understand them, aren't as random as they seem. They're located and numbered in such a way that, in the area a Civ is meant to colonize and expand into, they will find X number of this Luxury Resource (let's call it the "Primary"), where X is the number of Civs in that game. Indeed, if you look at any game of Civ V, you'll see that each Civ more or less has a monopoly on a certain luxury resource (until they start conquering each other, that is). Your spawn location is essentially guaranteed to have 1-2 units of your Primary Luxury, and 1 unit of a Secondary. Secondary Luxuries are the extra ones scattered around the map, found on random islands, in City-State territory, or in city spots far away from spawn locations. Secondary Luxuries tend to be the only copy of that resource on the map, and it's extremely rare for a Secondary to by the same kind as a primary. There are a few other notes, like how sometimes geography such as an ocean or a mountain range can screw up your intended Resource Monopoly, or how your Civ bias's your spawn terrain, and thus your resource availability, or the rules that govern City-State resources (word of warning; playing on a smaller-sized Plus map will cause the City-States to essentially all only have Whales), but this post is already long enough, so I won't go into any more detail than I already have :P .
