We tackle the inevitability of aging and health decline, probing into the potential outcomes that AI and technology may be able to offer. What does it mean to live to 120 years of age if it's a life filled with quiet desperation? We’re examining the economic impacts of longevity without health, and the challenges of maintaining a meaningful contribution to society.
This episode is for you - the forward-thinker, the innovator, the curious mind that's intrigued by the intersection of technology, health, and longevity. If you're captivated by the potential of AI and tech to revolutionize our lives, or if you've ever found yourself wondering about the true meaning of extending human lifespan, then this conversation is definitely for you.
With insights from Dr. Mehmood Khan, a renowned figure in scientific research and healthcare, you'll explore the role of government spending, healthcare costs, and the resources needed for an additional 30 years of life.
More importantly, you'll discover the massive opportunities laying ahead for us all. This conversation is not just about living longer; it's about creating a future where health allows us to contribute through all stages of life. So, come join us in this thought-provoking journey and let's redefine longevity together.
Powerful Insights From Dr. Mehmood Khan:
“Most people don’t want to live longer, they want to live healthy as long as possible.”
“What is our right to lead and what is our to succeed?”
“We don’t learn passively, we learn through instructions. That is a human attribute.”
“The day we figured out we could treat somebody with a fever and stop them from dying by giving them bark of a tree, we were preserving life.”

I am tired of everything coming down to GDP, and leverage, and productivity, treating people like chess pieces to be moved around. This is unique to the tech world...this God complex that treats us all like numbers on a spreadsheet. Money and wealth are not all that is of value in the world and it is certainly not the only reason that a life has value. The transactional belief system needs to stop.

I'm a civil engineer who was trained in the 70's. When I retired after 31 years working as a patent engineer for the federal government I decided to follow my dream of becoming a professor. I've completely reinvented myself. I got an MA in Sociology and started teaching at our community college. Straight ahead from that master's, I'm almost finished with a second one, this time MEng. Engaging intellectually with young adults has always been fun. I do this for fun. And... I'm more technically literate than most of them. I'm more active and have better energy too. I'm having a fabulous time.

Even though I'm only 50% of the way through this episode I find it very impactful. I'm a 61 year old who recently found myself unexpectedly unemployed and have decided at this late juncture to change my career career. I have no intention to retire.. ever. I think the importance of having a big audicious goal is essential to remain vibrant cannot be understated. Looking at the discussion around an aging population and the financial implications, reinforces my belief that striving to contribute in a meaningful way is critical to remaining healthy. Living in a meaningful way, whatever that means on an individual basis is critical to having a vibrant and healthy life. I truly believe idleness is as detrimental to health as an unhealthy diet or over indulgence in a vice such as alcohol. Just thought I'd share my thoughts.... thank you @TomBilyeu for your ever thoughtful and impactful discussions.

After over 10 years on self-improvement, the number one thing I’ve come to understand is that I am most disciplined, strong, fulfilled, loving, and present, when everything I do is an expression of a healthy self worth. I have nothing to prove, not even to myself. I realise that I am worthy of my own honour and respect, and that of others. If I’m not treating myself in the best way to honour the highest side of myself, or I’m allowing others to treat me badly, then something is off. I honour the passions and purposes I feel called toward by diligently working toward them. I work on myself everyday and reap the rewards, not because I need to so I can feel good about myself, but because guess what, I’m worth it. I deserve to be happy, healthy and prosperous, so do you.

This guy is infuriating. When he's talking about contributing to society after 60-65 he's assuming jobs or task like taking care of your parents, volunteering at church will pay the bills. Most people can not keep up with inflation and I suspect most people don't want to work past these ages. He also says that you can "change careers", like that's something the average person can just take on. Does he think we can just go to school again for another 4-6 at any old time and get enough experience to be a CEO while were taking care of our families and still paying our bills. This guy is an idealist. I don't think his ideas are bad, they're just not grounded in reality.

Anymore than like 2 decades and most people just don’t wanna do that anymore, and wanna start doing their own thing then to constantly be sucking up to your employer. What’s infuriating is that he’s expecting everyone else to go along with that for the next 100 years plus for the average person like it’s gonna be fine and dandy for everyone, people are gonna be sick of living like that and it would be a pure hell. Imagine having to work in “careers” for the next 200 years???? Fuck that shit there’s way more to life then pissy careers and resumes

I don’t want to live longer. I’d rather feel better while I’m older. But I have no interest in extending the time I am here. If it’s guaranteed I will live until 80 and then die at 80, I would be fine with that. Haha. This world is a scary place and the older I get the less I will be aware of what’s going on and the less I’ll be able to deal with what’s going on. And I also don’t want to live the last quarter of my life depending on other people. You lose your drivers license. You get put in a nursing home or a care home. I don’t what to experience that for very long. There’s no reason we need to be living longer than 90. Not even mentioning that the older you get the lonelier you get. Your friends die, your family dies. And not many prior your age are around. It’s lonely, even if you have the family you created. Because you’re old, it’s hard to relate to them.

As we get older Corp America does want us that's been around for a while unless you have a job no one else has done. If you have learn a skill a trade and turned it in to something to contribute with how easy it is we are all now paying for you. You in a protected class if you do get in to Corp. Youn dont hit your quota and complain and there's a 3 month investigation. With someone not protected their like damn okay. On the next..the mature one. But the protected classes use that to manipulate and get what they want in bigger business. It's amazing, can't hold them to the same standard they are hinting they didn't get the same training. Better let them not pull their weight a few more months. I've seen I've managed you and in general it's 50/50. That's what I've cashed out. No one taught. Pretty simple concept. I do that cash out 1000 a day on the week days work my normal 6 to 6, then check in on my other companies. So simple..lock Smith. 16000 people in my state lock themselves out every day. I have people go help them...not hard no over head, no home. No need to say anything, it was a lie. It was and still is a big business and thats it. On the other hand, my elders never went to a home or else because family was there to support and care for them, nobody risked anything or sacrificed anything that our elders havent sacrificed first for us. The same happened on my husbands family, no one ever went to a home or was abandoned or anything like that. A family is a family all of it or there is no real family. Thats how we were raised and thats how our families are still being raised. We are now a big family because those incoming through marriage are family too and their family is our family now. Its how we treat our neighbors too. Viruses or no viruses.

What’s weird is at times I feel like I want to live forever, and I genuinely feel like I would enjoy every moment. I sometimes would even pray for it, even tho I didn’t actually believe it was possible in my lifetime. Now seeing videos like this and how close we are gives me chills. I was able to see my “path” in life and made it. The fact that it’s happing again with something so extra ordinary is so exciting. I understand being negative and preparing for the worst. But we have to have hope for the best and actually work for it. It’s a societal issue we need to fix. It’s getting there. For some of us. We know changing the world isn’t on the shoulders of one person. However a simple change on how we help and educate the ones around us, and those we meet. We are actually changing the world faster than we think. But I’ll end it there. I just hope that we all get to meet one day. I hope we all will talk about this video 1000 years from now. I hope we will treat others and ourselves with love and care that we all deserve.

Absolutely...the burden of Billions and Trillions of years of life is heavy. Very few will be able to withstand the weight of all that time. Not to mention the exponential increase of accidents happening to a person living through that kind time frame. But I think not being limited by the constraints of time is an important step to add more value to one's life...to become more appreciative of what we are so we don't mutually agree to let it go so easily. Like in wars or senseless choices pressed by the limited time we have.

I also disagree that most people care about their health. If that was true they wouldn’t be living in stress they would want ease not disease in the body. They wouldn’t gorge on sugar and processed foods and be overweight putting pressure on heart. They would walk run exercise rather than use electric scooters bikes etc or drive everywhere. Most people are just too lazy to really care about their health. And because of that their lifespan will be greatly reduced no matter how much AI is involved

Lazy? Or struggling? People are overworked and burnt out. In my state, employees aren't even entitled to breaks, no matter how long their shift is. People are having to pick up second or third jobs to get by. Shitty jobs with inadequate breaks. Jobs that will tell you you're fired if you call off, which is also somehow legal. I'm a stay at home mom with a worry free financial situation. I take my time to plan meals, shop, and cook. But it takes time and energy to do those things. It is 11am and I'm starting dinner prep. Most people can't do that. If I worked 60 hours a week, I'd be ordering out too. People aren't choosing that kind of life, generally. They're fucking tired and broke and then they are told it's their own fault for being lazy. This is a huge, systemic issue, not a moral failure of individuals. I've been in tougher situations and I enjoy a more comfortable life now, but it's not because I'm harder working than other people. And I haven't forgotten what it was like to be so dead tired all I could do was shove some crackers in my mouth and go to bed. I'm honestly embarrassed for you that you can't see any of that and instead choose to think the worst of others. Is it to make yourself feel superior? I'm honestly curious.

The search for immortality, although understandable from the human desire to transcend death, raises important reflections on the natural cycle of life. Considering that scientific advances could one day allow us to get closer to immortality, it is crucial to think about the consequences of stopping the process of generational renewal. Death is not only a natural mechanism that allows evolution and progress through new generations, but it also connects us with the humility of our existence. Accepting death as a part of life can be seen as an act of generosity towards those who will come after us, allowing them the opportunity to forge their own path and contribute to the continued development of humanity. Ultimately, immortality could limit the diversity and innovation that is born with each new generation, aspects vital to the advancement and enrichment of our species.

It always frustrates me when the discussion turns to 'diabetes is a choice.' To a certain extent I agree but what is missing is the conversation about income inequality, poverty, food deserts, lack of education (both public and in the healthcare system training and models.) For those who are educated and understand that there is a choice? Sure. Yes. As long as one has the resources to afford healthy foods. To self educate and research what it means to make the right choices can be a luxury of time that many don't have. To wade through the massive amount of info requires a high level of discernment as to what is true. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Doctors are largely ignorant in dietary impacts. It's not like smoking, which took decades of research and acceptance in the mainstream before society embraced the truth. Even comparing smoking with dietary health choices is not a fair comparison. Smoke or don't. Eat well, exercise and live a healthy lifestyle? Give up sugar, carbs, refined foods, etc. while raising a family and a full time job? Well...good luck with all that. Your likely on your own and won't get much support on any front. Understanding the complexities should be a much more important conversation. How do we change the system? Let's talk about that.

I love this guy, Dr. Khan!! ❤ I wholeheartedly agree with him on leadership and the power of the gut biome and how we keep creating more questions for ourselves when we think we’ve solved one problem and the effect of environment on our weight. I remember being in graduate school and so excited about the possibility of sequencing the human genome. And then when it was done, we saw that it was not the panacea we’d expected. That opened up the world of epigenetics which was fascinating! You can never be too arrogant that you know something about humans. The human, a miraculous dynamic being, evolved for thousands of generations among the healing earth, pristine oceans, forests and the stars. Yes, we had struggles but we had inherent internal motivations to do the things we needed to survive, unlike now where survival behaviors are abstracted away from us and we must force ourselves to do things unnaturally (e.g. go to a job) that give us very little pleasure by comparison, in order to survive. These stresses (unlike those of the past like hunting and gathering, building fire for cooking and warmth, etc) are no longer tied directly to our survival as they were in past generations and we also no longer receive the benefits of the natural world that we had in a plethora of ways! I think this absolutely drastically affects our health negatively in many ways now. And there is much research to back this up. The essence of the cause of being overweight is absolutely not about a need to eat less and move more and it always saddens me when people like Tom say that. I believe it is linked to feeling unsafe in some way. When the person feels unsafe, then a chemical change takes place in the body that tries to protect us. This often means holding onto fat stores. And I guarantee that some man telling me I am “choosing to be unhealthy” and he can fix me (as if his assumption that I’m broken is correct - and I’m not convinced it is) by controlling what I do, is absolutely NOT going to make me feel safer. Back to the drawing board for you Tom! And I disagree with Tom and most people on this notion that humans are inherently competitive. This comes from the work of Charles Darwin but there was another scientist at that time, LaMarque, who argued against Darwin and in favor of cooperation (which Dr.Khan is calling collaboration). I think he was correct. Humans are actually inherently cooperative, which explains why we have successfully managed to survive with 8 billion of us on the planet despite massive differences in our cultures, religions, etc. Winning automatically creates losers and that’s actually the wrong goal. We don’t actually create the best world for everyone when we create a zero sum system like that. It’s far better when we all work together, cooperating. A high tide raises all boat and steps on no-one. We are all connected so when you create losers, you ultimately lose as well. If you think winning fires people up, then you’ve not worked on a team of people who are in true cooperation. That isn’t just a team on fire, it’s full of love! It’s amazing and I think that’s what humans, who need connection more than anything else, ultimately desire. I’m 55 and trained as a scientist with a B.S. degree and a Masters degree in Biology, so I fully understand everything they are both saying; however, one thing they are not mentioning is the effect of mindset on health. I get so sick of being told we must always take this synthetic drug or that one. Why?! We don’t NEED that. Humans were healing long before we had material medicine and doctors. The body knows how to heal if we just learn how to allow it. There is plenty of research suggesting that you CAN effect your health by being happier and choosing thoughts that influence the environment in which your cells operate, such as those which turn on the parasympathetic nervous system, which in turn determines how they optimally function. Sleep, we now know, is more important than diet or exercise for health. And sleep definitely affects cortisol which affects weight gain. It’s not as easy as telling someone to limit their calories. If you are eating less to lose weight, but you are stressed and not sleeping well, your body will gain weight, even though you’re eating less. You have to look at a variety of factors, sleep, diet, exercise, gut biome, hormones, stress, etc. it’s not a black and white discussion. I obviously realize that material scientists do not want to jeopardize their credibility by being the first to lend support for further research in these areas, but I would be willing to bet that Dr. Kahn is aware of and likely, internally at least, gives credence to it’s legitimacy. It is so annoying that material science as an institution seems to have so much hesitation to break out of it’s old paradigm. It’s time for a new paradigm!

Buddha: "The problem is you think you have time." Extending life expectancy is all well and good. But we are a mere 76 years before the end of the century, a time when the scientific consensus advises that, left unchecked, current trends regarding degradation of the climate/biosphere suggest that our fate may be whether organized civilization will survive in a recognizable form for as we know it. One climatologist has opined, "Hope? We don't need hope. It's too late for that. We need courage to face what's coming." Which line do you want to be in: extended life expectancy or survival? There is a fundamental problem being overlooked. Tom, there needs to be a realization that we are facing not just simply a retirement / healthcare / lifespan issue. We are coming to a point in time where there are a lot more people than there will be jobs to employ them. Technology is replacing the worker... first basic labor, then blue-collar labor, and soon white-collar employees will not be needed at all or at a very decreased level. So... it is going to require a major change in the socio-economic system. A completely new method of income/wealth distribution is going to be required. It can't be a system where the wealth is concentrated into ever fewer hands. It won't work and it will change... if not by evolution, then by revolution. Just sayin'.

I don't want to appear that I know the answer to this subject, however, companies are a major problem when it comes to a person working beyond 60-65. I'm 81 now but when I was 65, companies were practically kicking you out the door. The answer to that is that the company could hire a very much younger person, at a considerably lower wage, and in most cases with fewer benefits. When I was 20, a company provided full insurance at no cost to the employee, you would get somewhere between 30 to 60 days of vacation, and you had an almost 100% assurance of retirement with that company, along with retirement pay, etc. I won't go through current company attitudes and benefits; you already know what it is. This adds directly to they companies bottom line. Another big issue is Insurance Companies, think about that.

Quality of life Quality of life (QoL) is a subjective concept that captures an individual's or population's well-being. It can be defined as a person's perception of their place in life, in relation to their goals, expectations, and standards. It can also be described as the perceived discrepancy between what a person has and what they want, need, or expect. A.I. could help this for each individual. Factors that play a role in QoL vary according to personal preferences. U.S. News ranks countries based on their QoL, which is based on an average of scores from nine country attributes. These attributes include: Affordable, A good job market, Economically stable, Family friendly, Income equality, Politically stable

Trying to convince people that old people can still contribute physically to society is the wrong path. Old people pass on WISDOM, that's their function in society. Unfortunately, everyone wants to stay YOUNG forever, both in mind and body. Nobody wants to take advice from an old person with the mind of teenager.

Immortality inevitably leads to senility. After all, the person who seeks immortality is really seeking to know the Self. The desire to be immortal is really the desire to be enlightened. You can take eternity to know thyself or you can do it right now. Once the Self is realised, one realises they've always been timeless, and immortality loses its meaning.

It’s crazy to worry about expansion of life as our bodies are just not meant for immortality on earth. Our bodies just wear down. They break, tear and get infections It’s the people with money, the have it alls, through luck, the lucky sperm club or being in the right place at right time guys and gals, that are worried they won’t get a chance to enjoy all that generational wealth. If God wanted us to live forever here on earth we would, he’d have designed us to do so. We are all assholes on this planet and very few worthy of immortality. Get in, get out and shut up worrying about living forever. You can have 3 homes, 2 yachts and a private jet, but baby your coffin and urn is the same size as your maids. That’s what scares the rich. We are turning into the Egyptians, obsessing about living forever. That’s what happens to the elite. They want to “buy” themselves out of the inevitable- the even playing field of death.

My question to you is then what is there to be optimistic about? Shure find your joy in life and do what you like to do but you can't say that EVERONE you come across is able to have a happy life or feel fulfilled hell I bet you happy life is riding on someone else's sorrow cause there are only winner and lossers in the current culture where in and I hate to say it but there's a lot of people priced right out of there personal heavens be it wanting to be financially stable to have family's of there own or just being Able to live with them selves and not wanting to check them selfs out of life. I would say the ones you call pessimistic are really just realistic based on what they see before them based on the current information given to them so if you do have better info to be hopeful for thats sounds possible then please share with the rest of the class otherwise don't just say things are gonna be fine make it fine

The attempts to reprogram or should I say manipulate epigenetics is not necessary. Why? All of the programs are already within in us. The key is not to interfere with the process, especially at the fundamental levels! Such an ego when we perceive all biological medical procedures and societal failures as gains. That mind construct has produced the sickest population in human history. Disease is at an all-time high, the cost for conventional medical care that supposedly remedies disease is also at an all-time high. You are not going to fix a problem with the same system that created it, and you can't get well in the same environment which produced the illness. What do you think?......or don't ya think?

Here's what else we have seen in history. Times when human life was worthless, feudalism. When the emergence of the first specializations made a person valuable. Now on the horizon, we see a sharp decrease in the value of a person and the risk of the emergence of a new type of feudalism; its outlines are already visible today.
