Ramesses II (c. 1303 - 1213 BC) is considered to be Egypt's greatest and most powerful pharaoh. Taking the throne in his twenties, Ramesses ruled Egypt for more than 60 years. Ramesses is remembered as a great military leader as well as for the extensive construction programs he instituted. He is also remembered for building a new capital city, Pi-Ramesses. Some historians believe that Ramesses is the pharaoh in the biblical story of Moses.

@@maerythegreek9008 We don't know how that language sounded like. So Coptic or any semantic language includes (Arabic, Hebrew..) would be enough, Semitic languages are incredibly close to the Egyptian family. Egyptian Arabic is perfect choice if you asked me, It's kinda of mixture between Arabic and Coptic, and it's the native language of Egyptians (100m) includes Coptics

Ramesses should be speaking Coptic, it has no native speakers, but it's the language that is most related to Ancient Egyptian and the priests (yeah, it's like Latin, spoken only by specialists and priests) really speak it with not much accent, but an accent won't care, because no native speakers

andreas-daniel Martonosy Coptic isn't ancient Egyptian. In fact, with the addition of all the Greek from the incursions, I'm sure any afro-asiatic language (Arabic included) would have had more in common with what Ramses spoke at the time than Coptic's late incarnation would.

I don't know why people keep saying he's not speaking Egyptian Arabic, but he is. Granted (very!) proper and formal, but still Egyptian Arabic nevertheless. Granted though that it would have been better to get him to speak a language native to Egypt, even if we don't know how any if these languages would have been pronounced or spoken (ideally what Egyptologists call "Neo-Egyptian").

So, the team of Civ 5 was lazy enough to have Ramesses speaking Arabic instead of Egyptian. However, in Civ 6 Cleopatra speaks to you in Egyptian. So, in the 2010's was this team unable to get a translation from oh I don't know...licensed archaeologists and then have a voice actor speak the translation like they did later on? It's laziness. And before I even think of recognizing arguments of "Arabic is close to Egyptian" no it is far from similar. The only thing the two languages share in common is that they are Abjads. Also, before anyone goes about saying "We don't know how Egyptian sounded": They added Assyrian, Phoenician and Akkadian to Ashurbanipal, Dido and Nebuchadnezzar, those are ancient and dead too but, like Egyptian have left much writing behind. However, are we certain what those sounded like either? If you (reader) time-traveled to Nineveh in Ashurbanipal's time could you say...buy food in a marketplace? They should not have been so lazy and given Ramesses the language he would've spoken in life, or at least what we *think* he'd have spoken in life. It's good they fixed this in Civ 6, but in Civ 5 it's just silly.

Well, can we talk about laziness when they took the time to, as you say, add dead and obscure languages on characters that spoke those languages ? I've heard that they didn't have a pronounciation guide for Coptic and that it is why they had to resort to that. Ramesses' case is probably more the exception than the rule.

The reason he is speaking Arabic instead of Coptic is because the Coptic speaker they had hired had to cancel at the last moment and they couldn't find another (very few people speak Coptic; you can't just find one out in the street).

The western part of the empire was the area previously belonging to the Babylonians. In the Babylonian empire the language was Aramaic (which is why Nebuchadnezzar should have been speaking Aramaic and not Akkadian) so the Persians just didn't change it when they took over. In Iran, however, the language was and remained Persian (as well as other Iranian languages)

Darius made Aramaic the official language of the empire in his rule, why would he do that if he couldn't speak it? He gathered a group of scholars to create a language only for the Persian people to speak, but Aramaic was otherwise the common language. What reason would he have for making Aramaic so widely spoken if he himself was unable to speak it?

Aramaic was used for the western part of the empire, I don't think there's any proof that Darius himself was even able to speak it. The language of foreign affairs? We might as well have all the leaders speak English then (namely the native Americans). All that said, I'm glad that there's at least one leader which speaks Aramaic.

+Awesome Alligator 101 Hello sir, I'm an Egyptian and I studied some of Art History in Ancient Egypt.And there is a theory supported by many that ancient Egyptians spoke Arabic. Not Arabic as it is today exactly. but a slightly "older" form. an "old version". They might be the first to speak Arabic in fact... The Hieroglyphic writings and symbols might be the first written form of Arabic.. .Since it shares many similarities in the design of today's Arabic letters... A fact that supports this is that today's Egyptians use many expressions that doesn't have any meaning in today's culture. but has a meaning in ancient Egyptian's. Example is "I will send you behind the sun".. a threatening expression which refers to the God of Sun in ancient Egypt who tortured enemies of the pharaoh. So yes. Ancient Egyptians used that expression as a threat. Now days Egyptians use it even if they don't "know" what it means. just because it moves from a generation to another.
@tFighterPilot

Sounds like modern Arab-Centric bullshit theory. Heard the same things about Canaanites also from and Arab "Professor". These "Theories" are made up to make it seem like the Arabs are natives of the lands outside Arabia rather then colonialist conquerors. The origin of Arabic letters is no mystery. They come from the Nabataean letters - from the Syriac letters - from the Aramaic alphabet - Phoenician alphabet - Proto-Sinaitic alphabet and then yes, Egyptian alphabet. However, same goes for pretty much every alphabet used from Spain to Mongolia.
