Transcendental Neil at his best. I love how every song Neil and Crazy Horse play, they play it as if it is the last time they are ever going to do it. It's as if they don't want that song to stop, or not until they've given their all to every possible component to exploring and uncovering the fullness of the song and it's absolute integrity...... and the precision of their sound as they weave and build and explore....... and the emotive power of the notes and lyrics; just mindbendingly awesome. It's a travesty that this sublime performance of Cortez is only 22 minutes.......

I really appreciate you guys who were there or who share your early experience with the Zuma album. I came to love Neil's work 20 years or so ago and this is the absolute best song written and performed by arguably the best singer songwriter of the 20th century also happens to be one of the best rock guitarists if the 20th century. The interpretations in the performance of this song were built in from the beginning and I will agree that this is the best interpretation of the song of his own creation. I'm a sculptor and as I see it the absence of or negative space of a thing nay be more important than the space anything fills. That's why 22 minutes feels too short when 7 or 11 was too short but was perfect as well.

I believe it was 1996 when I saw Neil and Crazy Horse, and he played Cortez, very close to this lengthy version. That show I saw, Neil wore his boxer shorts with a t-shirt ( underwear). I still have a laugh looking back on that evening, but what a show it was. It was so perfect! To see Neil with Crazy Horse is an amazing feeling I'll never forget. Bought "Zuma" in '76, wore it out playing this track. His discriptive lyrics of Central American Indians have echoed for decades within my mind...eerily floating along on those melodies...cutting to the bone just as Cortez did. My impression of the song's ending verse has been Neil penned the lyrics to suggest he "lost his way" as in he was killed by Cortez and has been viewing his love from beyond...knowing she's still waiting there. Anyone else interpret it similarly.

The sheer weight of it. But it's bare bones already. The better to discover the empty fullness, and so at 09:09 Neil Young decided to do it anyway and the story proceeds across a desert of oases to where at 13:20 the chords lead to an outpost where I can remember where I both lost and found my way. One of the many things I like about Neil Young's work is that it reflects an experience that we all have at certain points and so the representation that is presented serves to unify a multiplicity.
