A few things I wished we saw, 1. When the statues grabbed you and you see what happened to them. 2. The statues could physically hurt and you needed to hide from them too. 3. At the end of the game, your character starts coughing, the pilot asks what's wrong and your character says "I'm just having trouble breathing". The last seen being your character in a government lab as one of the statues.

All I can say is "good googly moogly!" 😂 I enjoyed CJU's playthrough, but the game didn't deliver the scares that the demo left me anticipating. It, undeniably, looked great and sounded better. However, the storyline didn't hold together. As I'd commented on the demo, the name of the game and the name of the ship were perfect setups for a cohesive and gruesome backstory/creepy horror game. Instead, the devs made a puzzle game and populated it with a bunch of disparate and ineffectual antagonists--calcified crew members, the guy from Pirates of the Caribbean, spiders from The Thing, and something with tentacles--that made no sense as a whole. Great concept, lackluster execution, imo. Thanks so much, Chris, for playing it in one go. Have a great weekend!
@melissatheminx47109 ай бұрын
Ghost ships are always a great concept, and I did really enjoy this game. Yes, it could have been easilly 30 minutes shorter, there was too much backtracking, and the lack of conclusion to the story line was a massive hole in the game. In its favour it used sound really well, and did the feeling of claustrophobia really well too, with the restricted narrow spaces, lighting and it was very atmospheric. I think if these Devs worked a bit on storylines that actually have a plot and a conclusion, then they would take their games to the next level. All in all, I really enjoyed this. Thanks so much for playing this one through, Chris. You paced it beautifully, as always. x

I liked watching the video, I feel like the game was a great concept, maybe too rushed, I don't know. The ending was very unsatisfying and the puzzles just felt like adding extra words on your essay to reach a word count. It looked and sounded amazing, the story was amazing, I just wish they'd put more care into the execution of it.
@fredd32339 ай бұрын
A perfectly decent game, that I think you reviewed perfectly in your conclusion, Chris. My main gripe with it is its length : I'll be honest, I started to get bored around the half of the video (so I watched the game in 2 sittings, first half yesterday, second half today) because of the constant back-and-forth due to the multiple problem solving, with the lack of consequences from the enemies getting problematic after a while (as Chris said, no health bar). I feel some of those problems could have been solved if the game was maybe 2 hours-ish, it would have tightened everything. But as I said, a very decent game, and even more so because it was made by 2 people !
@jasonsnyder25775 ай бұрын
I totally agree with you. I'm playing through it now, then going to check out Chris' playthrough. It's decent, but I think this dev used their time more wisely in their previous game A Door in the Basement. If this game had the monster variety, tense-situations and weirdness of that one (along with the graphics of this one) it would have been really awesome. Perfectly decent is a good way of describing Lazaret. Looking forward to seeing Chris go through this once I'm done!

You don't bring a flashlight, you slide down that rope with your bare hands, no tools to break doors or locks down or to move rubble, you throw away a bunch of perfectly good flares (your only light source at the time)... yeah, the protagonist doesn't seem too competent.
@sootsprite64075 ай бұрын
What befuddles me the most about the whole 'bare hands' part is that in the demo the MC was shown wearing both gloves and long sleeves, specifically during the moment where you first aquire the crowbar. While foregoing the flashlight is one thing having on any amount of protective gear for this mission still did make a lot of sense, so really don't know why for the full game the developer went and made such a change because all it does is make everyone from the MC's search party look like a bunch of amateurs.

I think the whistling part is not pointless. Wherever the enemy is, when it whistles back, it will at least not attack or move closer to you. The whistle is not only intended as a sign for you to be alert (because not all of the statues intend to do harm), but it is also to make the enemy feel alert too and not attack you at close range because it is assumed that you know where they are. You will notice this when after you whistle and find some "barnacle boys", they don't immediately move, but if you don't whistle like in the last few minutes of the video, they are more active in approaching and attacking you.
@sunspout029 ай бұрын

I guess they leave it open for a sequel. We haven't seen any of the three artifacts, the ship is just vanishing again for a while. Perhaps the protagonist comes back in a few years to solve the mystery? Regarding the game: There is too much backtracking and the fact that none of the monsters are an actual threat, diminishes the feeling of dread after a while. They would've needed to change things up more, keep you guessing and surprised, instead of the repeated but consequence-free animations. Also, I thought it was interesting that the game features a lot of old-school adventure puzzles, which isn't something you'd expect in this setting. That part isn't bad, just a bit odd.

The way I was so upset that I couldn't watch this the second it came out 😂 I have, for the longest time, thought whistles are extremely creepy in the dark because I was terrified someone or something would whistle back. So this game played so much on that fear and I actually LOVED it
@LaciiJ9 ай бұрын
I'm always ecstatic when my favourite youtuber uploads, especially when it's a long video like this. I agree with your end game comments, and those of others. Also there were so many "Outlast" events in this game. The big enemy throws you like Chris Walker does, the squeezing sideways through the gap, the floor collapsing and losing your flashlight (camcorder), the statues basically being like the patients at Mount Massive (not knowing who will attack you and who doesn't care), landing on the pile of bodies, the big enemy breaking through the wall just like Chris Walker does. I could go on and on, but anyway I think the setting, visuals and sound design was great and original, I just wish the story had been more fleshed out and there had been less back and forward and more danger. Great video nonetheless!
@anniemcguire23599 ай бұрын
Bravo Chris! Your acting when reading on behalf of the protagonist keeps getting better and better; just when I think you've reached the top, you go one better. Thanks for this one, though I did get a wee bit tired of needing to go find yet one more thing, then another thing, and another... plus, you know, something is missing. Like the original purpose of boarding the ship kinda' trickled off, not saving anyone or anything, or just something. Dunno.

@trickery22689 ай бұрын
You know what this reminds me of, just a little bit? Dead Space, funnily enough. A rescue call to an empty ship where one man has to frantically put everything back together again if only so he can get the hell out. And to its credit, Lazaret REALLY nails down the atmosphere. Its scares are well timed, the sound design is phenomenal, and there are plenty of moments where you're left so tense. However, as you noted, the dangers aren't really... serious? Which is a shame, because I really liked the idea of whistling out dangers all the way from the demo! However, it kind of becomes very clear that they're only for scares (or maybe one hit kills for things not scripted? you never stumbled into that, chris, so who knows), since you never see anything like, say, health kits to recover from an attack. The "boss" monsters never really have a chance to heavily pursue you, either, for intense chase sequences or the like. The game does VERY good at making you tense and nervous, but it's all for show, it feels like. I think with a bit more *danger*, then the lack of story completion wouldn't feel so notable. It'd feel more satisfying, getting out of dangerous situations, and the boss creatures would feel like more of a threat. But because there's no threat to distract you, the story lacking is more apparent. Still, this is really rather good in its strengths! I think if the dev can nail down the actual danger of threats in a horror game, it'd be great, since they've already got the atmosphere, sound design, scares, and puzzles sorted out. So they're really close!

Game is good. For two working on it darn good. Do missed some things in story about archeology, what did he find, what is cause of this fog. Who was giant. And the crew ghost. Why is he only ghost. Such things. But ghost ship story was good, sway of ship was very good. Do miss the statues doing more harm or different attack then head smacking now and then, which would hurt you. So you don't know when it will be issue. Agree with Chris on his end commentary. And what was with the female mannequin head I need to know 😂😊. Chris despair about 1h34 in the story. Another thing needs fixing, then something is missing at 1h34.29 that laughter of madness made us laugh so hard😂😂😂. Great work devs. Do miss some personal stuff in crew quarters. Some pictures or personal stuff, a diary maybe. They seemed too plain. Would give good back story. Also more about mystery passenger. Also that one time black tentacle, where was the rest of that. But I did love it in a whole. ❤

Chris, I just want to say that I appreciate your style. You're very collected, patient, and contemplative, as if my friend waa showing me a game they liked, which actually lets the game speak for itself on its quality. ON THAT NOTE! I definitely agree that the lack of a threat makes it feel less scary and more like you're doing busy work, and the lack of a proper story to follow makes it hard to justify doing that work. Which is a damn shame, because the quality in the environment is exceptional! I was hooked at the beginning because I wanted to know what happened on this ship, where it had been, who is Haynes, did he have something to do with this, what's up with the spiders? We got some answers, but... not enough, in my opinion. I do wanna say, credit to the developers for messing with the tension using the games mechanics. When a game teaches you to run, you're expected to start using it... and nothing happened. With that cutscene to pick up the key, I fully expected the statue behind you to pull something... and nothing happened. Ironically, the lack of anything happening at first did a great job of putting me on edge, because you EXPECT that. Hundreds of games have trained you to expect that, and this game "Gotcha!" I just wish they threw in a threat to catch you off guard again down the road.

The game feels a bit too long, clocking in at almost three hours. It seems like there are parts that could be trimmed to make it feel more concise. As you mentioned, there's a lot of finding an obstacle, backtracking to find the necessary item, going back to where you were, and then moving on. The barnacle enemies provide some suspense, but they're a bit too predictable and don't pose much of a threat. There are too many of them, and the active ones don't feel particularly dangerous. Overall, the game is okay, but the suspense needs to be ramped up for it to be worth this length.

Long comment ahead... Good day, one and all - sure hope you are ready for another review of mine. As always, I shall be harsh, but also positive where it matters. Sadly, the former outweighs the latter a little. Honestly, this game is a bizarre case. I am loving the setting - not enough creepy ships these days. Some decent sound design going on, and the atmosphere is at times really effective as well. However, where to even begin with the bad stuff? When you break it down, all you do in this game is taking care of busy work. Seriously, it could not feel more artificial. Wherever you go, something needs fixing. Find the first item to get the second item in order to obtain the third item - that nonsense got old really fast and sadly persisted throughout. If your game is going to be that basic, it needs something to outweigh said bollocks. On that front, sadly, this one did not deliver at all. The idea behind the creatures is neat. Sure, we have seen countless variations of Weeping Angels already, but they usually get the job done - if only they had been given more to do. Those "barnacle boys" are not nearly aggressive enough. While initially creepy, they ended up just being uninteresting. As for the spidery fiend, what a waste. An entire section dedicated to it, yet nothing happens. Seems the game borrowed quite heavily from Outlast/Cry of Fear, what with the loss of the flashlight and subsequent discovery of flares. But whereas the latter can actually run out in Cry of Fear, here you just throw them as much as you want without consequences. Also, nothing attacks you. Again, just nothing. The final stretch picked things up a bit, but getting there sure is an endurance. The more things went on, the less I felt intrigued. A couple of moments along the way served to keep me awake, but those happened far too infrequently. Ultimately, another waste of potential in my eyes. The game is not all bad, naturally. Like I said, a creepy ship is always good. And I wish they would have done more with it. Some creepy spider thing stalking the narrow corridors, statues quietly following you - sounds so neat on paper. But what we have here is yet another example of endlessly wandering around, not doing much of anything. What did reignite my interest was that video towards the end, how one of the survivors tried to stay alive - that part alone felt creepier than most of the game. Then, more spiders show up - bloody hell, more of that. The statues at that point paled by comparison. By the way - good lord, the main character sure is another one of them morons. Not telling his people about the monsters? Come on, give me a break. That stuff takes me out of these experiences so much. So, yes... Not a bad game. If you can stomach the busy work and walking shenanigans. Story is serviceable, it just amounts to the usual collecting of endlessly scattered notes. I really wanted to like this one more, and it is a shame that I cannot. All of the item hunting, the out-of-place puzzles, a Lovecraftian entity which is too dumb to check lockers - just cannot handle it. CJU summed it up rather nicely towards the end - "All that for a key?" Yes, all you do in this game amounts to finding keys. Sigh. But these are just the ramblings of an old man. And being one, I shall now go back to sleep. Good day, the lot of you.

Really felt like this left us wanting. You shouldnt have to fully explain every tiny detail of a story, but a little more than basically nothing would help. The game could have used some streamlining, focusing on JUST the statues or JUST the spider things or JUST the big dude. With so little explanation all around, it just felt hollow.

Definitely agree with your points Chris. The game did look good and the sounds were good, but it would have been a more memorable experience with more threat from enemies. The environment was a bit weird with so much space with nothing to pick up or look at (notes, backstory, etc). The big guy didn't seem overly threatening honestly, more sound from him (growls, roars, etc) and more stalking type behavior would definitely be more threatening (the lockers didn't really end up being needed). Overall though, the story doesn't make sense how it ends. You fix a bunch of issues to release the lockdown, just to leave the ship which heads back into the fog, presumably disappearing again. There is no conclusion on exactly what happened on the ship. It does feel that the end of the game was a bit rushed with not even a screen finishing the story. Not a bad game for sure, but with some tweaks and improvements, this could be an amazing experience.

The whistling is super creepy for some reason.

Well that was disappointing. Neat setting but I feel like the back and forth could be less tedious if there was more to the story to uncover. Lots of things introduced that have absolutely nothing substantial about them and the game sort of goes out like a toot at the end. Lots of things I want to know the answer to. Spider thingies were neat but they felt as about as threatening as the statues did. Only two real "run or probably die" moments after all.

Yeah, I began to think *"People interested in this should just play Cold Fear instead"* around the 1-hour mark.

I rewatched this because it was so good and around 1:55:08 with the spinning chair, I slowed it down to 0.25 to see if there was anyone actually sitting there and no they just made the chair spin. I wanted to see if there was someone actually sitting there and maybe you could see them pass thru the little square window or just their side profile but nah its just a spinning chair since they probably didnt want to put in the model but I had to go back and see lol

I think that the biggest mystery on this ship is why does the C Deck include a shower room when each individual room has an en-suite bathroom with a stall shower?

Hey now, it gets lonely at sea and sometimes seamen hugs in the communal showers are what helps the lads to relax. I am not even sorry about that one.

Coming into this gameplay, I was expecting this to be real good, since the demo had given me that impression. The tense atmosphere on the first half, the whistling and the moving statue mechanic, as well as some of its puzzles were its huge positives, but it all stopped there. Having to go thru various prerequisites in order to complete an initial objective.... threats pushing you without causing damage..... main character kept his screwdriver for vents, but couldn't be bothered to keep the bunch of flares he was using from a previous location (and dared to complain that he doesn't have a flashlight)..... a lot of key fetching.... and they could've done more with the mysterious crew member, instead of glitching him to the corner of a room as his last hurrah. And then, there's the abrupt ending. It's still a decent game, but I truly had high hopes for it.

Lol I love how he forgot that if he was close to one and whistled, they wouldn't whistle back

1:42:50 That reminds me of the mini bank thing from Resident Evil 2 remake where you have to get the spare keys for the weapon lockers.

This game is totally giving me Monstrum vibes. That was a fun game you played 8 years ago or so?
