Thank you, Sir. This is, in my opinion, the best version of the poem. I found several others on You Tube but, each time, some of the pronunciations sounded odd to me. So I checked in the dictionary the pronunciation of certain words like "leisure", "job" ("Job"), "chaise" ... And it is your way of saying these words which is more correct (in British English) . So I will study your video until I know the text and the correct pronunciation of all these words... by heart. I'm French and it will help me to improve my English.

Well done, Chris! Anyone thinking this is easy should have a go themselves at pronouncing the whole poem. English pronunciation can indeed be challenging, even for native speakers. I didn't realise quite how hard it was until I recorded a version of The Chaos myself. You are right a lot of the words are unfamiliar to the modern ear and I do believe some of the words are pronounced slightly differently than nearly 100 years ago when Trenite wrote it 😀👍

Chris. Simply great. You did better than I did. I too pronounce Ralph like you but some people say Rafe which makes the rhyme rhyme in the poem. But really well played. Thanks.

Brilliant work! It’s a demanding piece and you’ve done the best job. I believe breeches = britches, and Ralph = rafe. And perhaps 🤔 rather should be water vowel rather ;) than ash vowel, so it matches father. But perhaps not, it’s a snapshot from another time.

Dear Chris, you may be interested in the IPA-transcription (with deeply felt gratitude for the good, old OED) I made in 2014 of the ORIGINAL version of 'The Chaos' as it appeared in Nolst-Trenité's book 'Drop your Foreign Accent - Vocal Gymnastics' (Haarlem, 1909). I had the bad luck of sending it to someone interested; now it has been wandering all over the Internet ever since. You may find it on the following site: ncf.idallen.com/TheChaosPRETTY.pdf (at least one person who does not ask money for it ...)

Thank you, Will. That must have taken a lot of work and will be very helpful for students who know IPA.

One "mistake" I noticed was eyrie. Your pronunciation was correct, but it can also be pronounced so the first syllable rhymes with air. This is the pronunciation that should be used, as it rhymes with canary in the previous line.

Isn’t lichen pronounced with a “ch” like in Chair?

It can be pronounced both ways. I said it the way I did in the video because it matches with the other line in the poem. From Chris

All hail the vanquisher of AI narration! The wonderful pantechnicon of English, a vehicle for ages of gathered lingual tradition. I love it, bastard that it is. Just a pity that few of us can read our own language as it was used only 300 years ago. Oh and I know Topsail to be pronounced Topsa'l , like Mainsail is Mansell, and where I live Launceston is not pronounced as it is in the UK. It remains stubbornly intact here. Got to love English!

As this is my favourite interpretation of THE CHAOS, I would appreciate if you were to publish the text in the description... some lines of what you recite do no appear in the subtitles, not sure if it's my laptop doing this or they are missing....

Say aver, but ever, fever. Neither, leisure, skein, receiver. Never guess--it is not safe: We say calves, valves, half, but Ralph. Safe and Ralph: something is wrong! In the poem or in the pronunciation.
