I saw an exhibition from Xi'an in Seattle when I was a kid, but it was when I lived in Nara, Japan that my interest really peaked. I lived about a 10 min walk from the ancient capitol of Heijo-kyo, which had been patterned after Xi'an. So was Heian-kyo, which later became Kyoto and the capitol for a millennium. I learned so much from my ESL students, many of whom were guides, researchers, and museum employees. The interconnection is obvious even at face value, and Chinese influence on Japanese history and culture goes deep into antiquity. I even had a few students that were Chinese nationals that worked and studied in the area, even one from Xi'an. It's at the top of my list of places to visit when I can get there.

To be honest, Xi'an, or Chang'an as it was known in antiquity, was probably one of the first global metropolitan cities in the world. You had international students and traders from all over what was then the known world to the Chinese there, and in particular Japanese international students made up of a pretty prominent part, even as making it into the subjects of quite few of the most prolific Chinese poets at the time, basically immortalizing them in history.

Japanese culture is a Chinese Tang Dynasty culture replica. Google search for “Japanese missions to imperial China” and “Japanese missions to Tang Dynasty”. Xi’an, formerly known as Chang’an, was the capital for many dynasties, including the Tang Dynasty. KZbin search for “Daming Palace and Tang Dynasty”. They briefly mentioned about the Japanese missions and envoys l to Tang China, knowns as kentoushi in Japanese, and Qian Tang Shi in Mandarin 遣唐使。

Xian, home to so many gigantic and mysterious Chinese pyramids. Like Huashan, another important megalithic site. And the tourists, like the historians and the archaeologists, just let it all wash over them.

I hope Justin knows how lucky a guy he is! You are such a cheerful personality. Some two years ago, when I visited the terra cotta complex, we were rushed through the place by a guide - we were told that we had to engage a 'specially trained guide'. He rushed us through the exhibits and brought us quickly to a gift shop, where he worked hard (harder than when he was taking us on the tour) to buy the souvenirs. I was totally amazed at the terra cotta army, but equally totally unimpressed with the commercialisation of the whole show. Oh well, maybe I was unlucky to have got that particular guide.

That's one thing I dislike when I travel to some Asian countries - squatty potty. Lol. I just can't.....I guess only the more rural and older places still have those. If the hotel isn't so far to get back to, I rather just wait till I return to the hotel to use the bathroom. So...seems like this place is a tourist trap. I was thinking about visiting this place if I do visit China, but not sure if it's worth a day trip.

Your travel videos are really good. But one recommendation though.. Please give information on the type of food that you are having. Whats the day that you are recording. I think if you also show the struggles you are facing like finding a restaurant or a hotel or anything. People will love to see the city and its tiny differences through your camera. Like the time you bought chocolate, I would have loved to see what chocolates you bought. But I absolutely love watching your videos. You are doing great. Best Wishes..

I'm not a China lover, but the museum is really amazing, and there are so many stores ( restaurants etc ), can't imagine back in 1974 ( not so many years ago ), it was only a small village, and the people ( who lived there ) were very poor, even no $$ to buy a bicycle. ( I got no money to buy a classical or Chinese pop music record, too. back in mid 1970's )
