Reminded of this pretty profound speech by Bilbo to himself in the tunnel of the Lonely Mountain: "Now you're in for it at last, Bilbo Baggins. Why are you here? You've no use for dragon treasures. Feel the wyrm's heat, Mr. Baggins? A few more steps and you shall see the old dragon Smaug at last. You can still turn back, you know. But to go on, to take those steps...that would be the bravest of all moments. Whatever happens afterwards is nothing. Yes, here is where you fight your real battle, Mr. Bilbo Baggins. Do you go back? ... *No.* " - The Hobbit, adapted by Rankin and Bass, 1977

My father passed away on February 9th, 2022 in his sleep. He had such a huge impact on my life not the least of which was reading the entire Lord of the Rings to me, from the Hobbit to the Return of the King, at bedtime when I was a child. It had a profound effect on my life and helped make me the man I am today. Before he introduced me to the books, he bought me The Hobbit animated film and we watched it countless times together. I loved this song when I was younger, but it has recently taken on a whole new meaning for me as I entered into adulthood. I was a dreamer before: I wanted to do big things in theory, but I still was just a kid and it all seemed so far away. But now I am a man, and I recently began my time at a Federal Service Academy (training to be a sailor). It was daunting for a while, and I began to think the adventure was not for me because I missed my home and my family more than I had expected to. This song gives courage to this soldier that there is more to life than in the little hamlet in which he grew up. The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.

Lovely rendition of the song, particularly like the choral parts, and without the rather insane vibrato of the original. If you're planning to also do your own versions of Tolkien Inspired music, any thoughts on looking at some of Stephen Oliver's settings from the 1981 bbc radio play? He has probably the most gorgious setting of Bilbo's last song, as well as a wonderful arrangement of the hymn to elbereth, indeed next to Donald Swan's own arrangements, Oliver's are probably my favourite and I'd love to hear the songs of yor resung, as it were :D.
@claws618212 жыл бұрын
For me the complete removal of the tremolo/vibrato from the vocals here is actually borderline depressing because it echoes that skillful technique's utter elimination from mainstream music since the late 1990s... So while I can't agree with you on that point (and might argue your description of the original depending on why you use "insane" XD), it at least cheers me some that you recognize it for what it is rather than the "lack of control" that so many socalled teachers and conductors consider it to be today.
@brandonschubert74342 жыл бұрын

OMG thank you guys for doing this one. So often lately I hear how wonderful the live-action movies were and how great a director Peter Jackson is, but to me, his first trilogy is barely tolerable and the second one shouldn't exist. This movie is where it all started for me; I grew up with it, and it's because of it that I first read the hobbit when I found an illustrated copy in the library in 4th grade. The LOTR followed, and I'm pretty sure I read all four books at least a dozen times growing up. So thanks again for this trip down memory lane, and I hope to see you guys tackling a few more of the songs from this movie. Especially the cut song, Old Fat Spider. It's been a favorite of mine since I first found it on youtube a couple years back. So droll, as they say. edit: And also their version of Misty Mountains.
