The whole point is that - while it takes place in 1940s Hollywood - it has 0 reason to be. Straight gigolos not wanting to have gay sex, and gays wanting to have gay sex, are concepts that could easily take place anywhere in almost any setting. It’s a show meant to be woke BS for writers who hate writing in a timeline that has internet or cell phones to poke holes in their lame plots, and give their fellow gay friends in costume design a job.

@@MrFuggleGuggle To be fair, there are a lot of topics that are relevant at pretty much every point in history. I'm not watching the show, but if it aimed to describe the specific experience of being gay, or of being forced to be a prostitute in the 40's (which would be pretty different back then, especially the former), then I could see that being the reasoning for the use of the time period. No clue if it actually focuses on that, though.

The problem with period films(especially set in the 40s and 50s) is that everything looks too polished and clean. Everyone is wearing the same clothes the year it's set in (which they wouldn't have been) and all drive the same car the year it was produced(which hardly anyone could afford at the time).

That's because they're all made by "I was born in the wrong generation" people. People who have never stayed in a bad place long enough to view it as no more than an exotic location. Their vacation outlook expands across time, where they want to see everything without dealing with the gritty shit.

People have zero clue about that period in Hollywood. More women were seducing men than the other way around. I read Douglas Fairbanks's autobiography just by chance and he's very honest about what Hollywood was. It was far more boring than people think. The casting couch only ever existed with some producers because they knew women would drop there panties for parts.

But don’t ya know, Hollywood is this awesome woke place where you can be yourself! Not like those icky fly-over states, so bring all your money, abandon your family and hop on Mr Weinstein’s wild ride!
@videogamenostalgia
@videogamenostalgia 3 жыл бұрын
It's not clear until a few episodes in but the show is basically an alternate universe version of the forties where gay and black people get accepted as long as they're 'out and proud' (the show is surreptitiously pushing the idea that if Hollywood was just more diverse in its casting it would make everyone in the country automatically more accepting). It's incredibly lame and preachy and stupid as hell, but stuff like the black and white guys mixing in bars does kind of make sense in-universe.
@fleebogazeezig6642
@fleebogazeezig6642 3 жыл бұрын
@@videogamenostalgia I guess that makes more sense, on that note I hate that Actors constantly push for “diversity” in Hollywood films, when Hollywood has churned out nothing but this shit for the past decade or so, then I realized something, these actors honestly think Hollywood represents the entire world, when they see that the world (or at least america) isn’t some “multicultural” “””paradise”””, they take it out on Hollyweird.

This show gets gayer as it goes on and so much more preachy. Essentially the theme is “what if Hollywood paved the way so we could all be openly gay and black in the 40s?!?!”
@videogamenostalgia
@videogamenostalgia 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it really goes off the rails when it turns out it's some kind of parallel universe version of the forties. It's a load of Hollywood people huffing their own farts and vastly overestimating how much socio-political influence Hollywood has. It's such a dumb premise. If Hollywood did the stuff they do in the show they wouldn't have inspired and led the world into equality through movies; they'd just have been made into pariahs.
@SWAT616
@SWAT616 3 жыл бұрын
@@videogamenostalgia It’s also strange why they think making a fictional past makes them look any better today. Like, Hollywood in the 40s didn’t do any of stuff they’re now fantasizing they did through this show, and yet they still want us all to blow them for being so brave and moral.
@videogamenostalgia
@videogamenostalgia 3 жыл бұрын
@@SWAT616 It's just the Hamilton thing where you take some objectionable aspect of our society's past and wallpaper over it by doing some kind of fantasy reinvention where you're like "oh wouldn't it be cool if it never happened and we were all perfectly intersectional from day 1 and everything else played out the same way?" - such a pathetic way of addressing societal problems.

Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell are guilty of this in The Shrink Next Door. It could have been great, but both actors seem unable to transcend their celebrity in order to play their roles convincingly, which, from a marketing standpoint, is a good thing, as the majority of viewers want to watch the celebrity, not the acting. The best actors seem to always transcend their celebrity (Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Daniel Day-Lewis, etc.), and the serious-minded average actors (Brad Pitt, Leonardo Dicaprio) strive to.
