The problem with period films(especially set in the 40s and 50s) is that everything looks too polished and clean. Everyone is wearing the same clothes the year it's set in (which they wouldn't have been) and all drive the same car the year it was produced(which hardly anyone could afford at the time).

I read Douglas Fairbanks's autobiography just by chance and he's very honest about what Hollywood was. It was far more boring than people think. It's not clear until a few episodes in but the show is basically an alternate universe version of the forties where gay and black people get accepted as long as they're 'out and proud' (the show is surreptitiously pushing the idea that if Hollywood was just more diverse in its casting it would make everyone in the country automatically more accepting). It's incredibly lame and preachy and stupid as hell, but stuff like the black and white guys mixing in bars does kind of make sense in-universe.
