it hurts to hear them call this a fantasy when we deal with this in Oklahoma City frequently. edit: Infact were infamous for law enforcement corruption. many now back extremist groups like proudboys and 111% also klan meetings often hold records like that. theres a couple lodges in Tulsa that openly host klan meetings and "community input" sessions, only to have extreme qualifications to sit in on one of these. they are taking law enforcement, local schools and have elected officials right under our noses. also domestic t-orism by white extremists has been on the rise due to political discourse. memeber the backpacks? i do

Already happened once. Gary Plauche blew away a pedo for touching and molesting his son. Guy got a handgun stood next to a pay phone waited until they passed then scattered the pedophiles brains over the floor. Plead no contest and the state offered him a plea deal. A suspended 7 year sentence and 5 years probation. Didn't spend a day in jail or prison. It's kind of hard to really get anyone to feel sorry for a bunch of pedophiles. You could be a white millionaire with media connections, and if you rolled up in a courthouse and murdered three defendants (in a clearly pre-meditated attack) with an illegal firearm, you’d get at least 25 years. If you’re a poor black guy like Sam Jackson’s character, you have even worse chances. In fact, regardless of race or status, if you had an assault rifle in a courthouse you’d probably be shot by sheriffs before you could even surrender Edit: also great catch that this movie was right before the anti-hero boom when heroes had to be very clearly good, villains had to be unrepentantly evil, and any morally ambiguous actions taken by a hero had to be given every justification imaginable to make it easy to understand

But you have to take into account the reason those two men were murdered in the first place was because they admitted to brutally raping, torturing, and attempting to murder a child. That doesn't mean Jackson's character wasn't guilty, or shouldn't have been arrested. It just means that his lawyer was able to convince the jury that his client was temporarily insane. Basically, the point of the story isn't whether Jackson was criminally wrong, but morally.

Well the defense used "temporary insanity" due to the rape of his daughter. So I wouldn't say irrelevant, because I doubt any father would be completely sane after his daughter got raped.

"And then imagine she was white" was so fucked up and all they had to do to make it less so was to say "Imagine it was your daughter/sister/niece". Still technically saying "imagine she was white" but with a modicum of tact.

I'm from Mississippi. Went to the same high school and college as the writer of the book based on this movie. This is all real and still going on in parts of Mississippi. The case based on the book happened in the city I grew up in. Hernando, MS. When I left the area in 2017 it was still there but beginning to sputter out.
