This is Clare Torry performing the Great Gig In the Sky at Wembley arena 22 November 1987. She appeared as a special guest to Roger Waters at this concert. Enjoy!!
(This is the ORIGINAL singer who sang on the 'Dark Side Of The Moon' album, for those who didn't know)
(Apparently there is a long 4 minute silence after it's ended.. didn't know how to edit it so i just left it in)

I loved pink floyd the wall bc my older brother had the movie on vhs. I watched it almost daily. When i was 10 i bought dsotm on cassette expecting it to be theatrical like the wall. Whenever this song came on I'd fast forward it out of embarrassment. One day when i was 13 i had dsotm on cd n a discman i would listen to on the bus ride to school. I figured no one can hear me listening to it so I didnt skip it. I felt it. Really felt it. Its so soulful and beautiful. It still moves me to this day.

I had such a hard time crying after my beloved mother passed following a lengthy battle with cancer. My husband put this CD on the stereo and that was it. The dam broke open, my heart finally shattered and the healing process began although this can still bring me right back to the first moment I ever heard Clare's solo. I owe her everything.

Cannot imagine how difficult it would be to re-sing the original version note for note, since I believe she more or less composed her parts as she went, on the fly, in the studio. Now try to do that alone, in front of a few thousand people. Boundless respect is deserved here, for both a masterful original achievement and a powerful live rendition.

And love. And heartbreak. And pain. Catharsis. I still remember the first time I listened to the album. Stayed up all night. First time I heard echoes. Cigarette after cigarette. First on headphones, then on speakers, then back on headphones. That sofa in Västerås, and that balcony. The summer and the long day. Beautiful time. Cried that night. Tear up every time I listen to The Great Gig in the Sky. Hence I avoid it a lot.

Yes, absolutely, the anguish, panic and terror of death approaching, the odd last scare as she passes through the vale, then calm acceptance once she's passed to the other side. The deepest and most inciteful song ever written - without a word in sight.

I think this is one of the most touching songs a female singer could ever try to sing, the quintessential aria of progressive rock. No one could ever sing it like Clare. When I finally attempted to record it myself, I carefully read what she had to say about when she recorded it, and took her advice on keeping the spontaneity in it, and did it my own way. I am honored to have my own rendition of it, but this song will always belong to Clare and she will always have my eternal respect for being the songstress of maybe the most epic female rock songs ever.

Maybe check what you write before you brag about how you sang the same song, and i can't even see what you could brag about? Honored, again seriously? No one knows you gtfo. And oh sure Clare must've really needed the affirmation that this song will always belong to her lol. What has it come to. Just go play with your grandkids or something. Ouch sorry you probably don't have em cus you were so far up your butt you let no one close.

I am who I am...a woman who writes and covers music from my soul from a place of love and authenticity. There are lots of "unknown" people with KZbin channels - aren't you one of them also? We reflect ourselves in what we give to the world, our own beauty or ugliness. It has nothing to do with age, fame, or lack thereof. We have only this moment, this space in our lives to breathe and live to the fullest and ask the best of ourselves and to share it freely...this song is about finding all our chances to do so have come to and end. I think based on your comment that it is you who does not quite get the import of that. We will all have a last breath. I for one will be glad when the time comes, to have used some of my breaths to sing, and wasted less on words of ill will...

Don't be silly people!! First off this is 15 years after she first belted it, some time on her voice plays a role. Second, this is AMAZING!! I don't feel she has lost any of the real feel the song initially had. Third, I dare anyone to do this song live and compare it to a studio take... you will disappointed. Lastly she wrote it, so if it doesn't live up to your standards...TS, she will sing it any way she likes. Once a masterpiece has been created it is ignorant to think the artist should or even can recreate it the same way. Certain things happen once and you can never expect the same results ever again...which makes them so rare, so beautiful.

Clare Torry....absolutely supernatural on this song. No wonder Pink Floyd had her do this originally. None who came after her have come close. They're all credible...but none have that orgasmic soulful tone she alone brought to the song. Her voice was not just a vocal performance -- she used it like a solo instrument. She soared above it. And they think today's divas are great? Sharing the stage with Clare would be a challenge.

John LaStrada Hi have listened to many trying to do this vocal and it takes a special voice and a special person that can depict the sensations of one dying. Most of the others trying probably don't undestand the concept. Have tried to explain to many people over the years that this is not someone having sex but someone dying. Difficult to get through sometimes

leslie cox Thanks for explaining this. I don't know about singing but when I hear something raw and extraterrestial, I know it. Roger David Nick Richard (RIP), all asked Alan (Parsons, the sound engineer of The Dark Side Of The Moon) if he had in mind a vocalist to fit the part and he recommended them immediately to call Clare Torry. My dad really loved this one too and played it a lot. I wish he was still alive today. Just so he could relive all his most special music remastered and sounding so good! He'd of been in his element living with all the new technology. He was an engineer. He embraced the new stuff in his day and age! I think he'd of been blown away by all of today's technology! I’ve seen and heard many very plausible renditions of this but none of them sound as primal as Clare’s ...it’s like her soul is being ripped out of her body and it’s then followed by the sweet, exquisite acceptance as it drifts off into the ether. I was lucky enough to tick one item off on my bucket list when I was honoured to watch Clare perform this live on Roger Waters’ Radio KAOS tour (in London) in the late eighties...and I use that word again “exquisite “

Wow wow and just wow! My God isn't she just phenomenal. I heard a rather interesting interview with Alan Parsons where he said that he "knew" a singer who could sing anything. Apparently she had no idea whatsoever that there were no words to the song, and she just sang her heart out and delivered musical history. I asked a street musician to play this song as my choice of my favourite Pink Floyd song, Wish You Were Here was my second choice. I have always had an affinity for this song and the stunning vocals, and but as I learned about the album history, I loved it even more. Cheers from Canada.

It is indeed Clare Torry, I was at the MSG Garden show too, August 26 1987 when Roger brought her on for the encore. Roger was playing the keyboards and shouting out chord changes. I was in the front row for the Radio KAOS Tour, God as my witness.

Sad that there's no actual video of this. I was hoping for better audio as well. Clare Torry did an interview saying that when the original recording was recorded she nailed it on the first take, she didn't even really know what she was supposed to be doing. She said David Gilmore directed her saying that they wanted no words and she should pretend her voice was an instrument. She told Alan Parsons to record her first attempt because it usually comes out to be the best, after that it sounds contrived. She didn't like it either and tried it a few more times, then she left. After that she heard noting from the band or Alan Parsons. Months later she saw the album for sale and saw her name on it. She bought it, went home and listened to it with headphones (the best way to listen to music) and liked it. She did so well the first time that I think even she can't duplicate herself. That's why nobody is impressed with this live version after hearing the recorded version. Turns out Clare was right, everything after the first attempt does sound contrived.

Don Lanteigne, a couple of corrections. Technically it wasn't recorded in one take. They brought her in on Alan Parson's recommendations, and it was explained that the piece had no written words and she was to improvise. He first two takes, apparently cut short, did include limited words, and Rodger Waters said that was not what he was looking for. According to interviews it was her idea to use her voice as an instrument, no Gilmours. She did leave the studio not believing her track would be used on the album, and was surprised to hear it when the album later came out. However, she was not credited on the original release. I have one and wondered for years who this voice belonged to. Additionally she received no compensation for the millions of albums sold. This did go to court and was eventually ruled in her favor, and subsequent copies of the album do credit her work.

Amazingly brilliant Clare.... Nailed it!!! 🫳🎤 My favorite song on the album since I was a little boy always being with my oldest sister Barbara and her husband Woody.. I was born in 66 and I knew every word to every song by 1974... I used to lay on the floor next to the speaker and just squeeze a pillow and exorb all the emotion this album provided. I'm not sure what they intended, but it went above and beyond their expectations is guess

"Dark side of the moon" e i P.F. senza questa performance non sarebbero gli stessi. Clare Torry! I love you!

As a sound engineer, I have often wondered if the engineer on this recording, the fabulous Alan Parsons, realized the historic significance of the moment when Clair Torry was singing. This is the Grand Slam of any recording/mixing engineer. This recording would be the only one on my resume.

I'm coming to Clare Torry's defense re: criticism of her live performance. Check out Clare's comments during an interview about the original studio recording posted by The Mudman (8:44). She admits "the first take is usually the best" and that any take after the first one is going to sound "contrived." For whatever reason Clare sang it differently than the original much like other musicians do with their own works. I wanted to hear the original studio version during the live performance too, but that's never the case when I've seen any show live. My heart wants to soar to all the familiar notes of the original recording I've listened to since I was a 7 y/o (47 now), but feels let down if I hear something short of that. Her performance isn't bad, it's just different from what I wanted or expected to hear. The original still makes me cry to this day; thanks Clare!!

I can see why some comments show disappointment with this version, but it is because they don't understand that singing live is really tough! You don't have chances for second takes and no studio engineering equipment to polish your sound. I actually was not disappointed with this version. Maybe I was expecting less and was surprised by a decent rendition. Overall very good.

It's not really anything to do with second takes, the studio version was done in one take and was amazing. But it would be extremely difficult to replicate, especially given the pressure you would feel.
