When Clarence first aired, I never gave it a second look, assuming it would be another slice-of-life show with tons of gross-out humour. However, I wound up watching the entirety of the series with my nephew a few months ago and...wow, was I wrong. Clarence really excels at portraying kids as being believable kids, in a more true-to-life way than many other cartoons. Sure, there are plenty of tongue-in-cheek moments and parodies to appeal to older viewers, but the writers did a fantastic job creating that sense of wonderment we have as children. I think the moment that got me the most was when it finally clicked for Clarence that Miss Baker was an actual person with a life outside of school; it's a great little nod to how reality can be so very different from the perceptions children have of it.

6:43 Ngl, I love it when kids are allowed to continue voice-acting a character as their changing voice really does add to the childhood experience they're representing. For shows that actually involve characters that age like Adventure Time, it's authentic to see their voices evolve. Compare that to The Amazing World Of Gumball that recycles the child actors when they start to hit puberty, or The Simpsons with adults in the sound booth that will never change their line deliveries. All three of these are successful tactics for voicing children in animated shows but I just generally prefer the Clarence way

I loved Clarence. Seriously underrated show. There’s an episode where he’s in the backseat of the car imagining himself running along the powerlines and stuff. And i was like “Oh damn.. i used to do that as a kid.” Although i imagined Sonic the Hedgehog running and jumping over everything. Still it was super relatable and nostalgic. It disappointed me that when i would ask people if they watched it they would say they didn’t even give it a chance or just assumed it was bad. I wish Clarence had a longer run, but it had a decent life span.
@rxanime5352 жыл бұрын
Clarence is quite underrated. I appreciate that each of the characters are different in terms of looks, personality etc. What I think a lot don’t appreciate is what you stated the surrealism in reality that is fascinating in our growing years. Time slows down during those moments of discovery. There’s actually a theory of perception where our perception of time speeds up when we have a set routine such as when we become adults. When you’re a kid every day seems to last forever because you’re always doing something different to explore more. The key to getting the most out of your time on earth is not to extend it persay, but to embrace all that life has to offer. Notice the slight change in colors of the leaves, the caterpillar climbing a blade of grass, the ripples in the water etc. Clarence gives perspective to absorbing as much as you can during childhood and maybe is how you can continue to do so while you’re an adult if you see how Clarence influences the adults in his life.

It is such a fascinating, life-like but yet sensational look at childhood, and it's just all around amazing. Clarence was one of those shows that has both traumatized me and also helped me sleep. (that damn deviled egg episode, holy shit). I could actually feel some odd nostalgia from everyone's side. (Everyone being the kid characters like Jeff and Clarence). Sumo I could relate to because of my mom, who's mostly lived paycheck to paycheck, never really having a job, though. She used to live in this weird rundown neighbourhood with a tightknit community. Jeff reminds me of the home that I have with my dad, who's not like the exact opposite of my mom's, but it's still higher living. Although Clarence on the other hand is more true to my roots on both sides. The modest living where the parents still love as wholly as they can despite any struggles they'd be experiencing. Although Clarence has some REALLY freaky stuff in it, I can't help but get an awesome feeling of nostalgia from it.

This show was criminally underrated and underappreciated. I was way beyond the target age when I watched it (I'm 37 now), but it gave off great feels of nostalgia of being a kid at that age. Just kids being kids, and doing both fun things (like the Fun Dungeon) to the mundane, everyday things (grocery shopping), and how doing those things were like as a kid. The realism in how they represented all of the different family dynamics was excellent. I had friends growing up who were poor like Sumo, and friends who were rich and unfulfilled like Belson, but we all were just kids being kids in the end. As an adult, I loved all of the different styles, and how each character was based off another well-known IP--for example, Chad being modeled off of Donkey Kong, one kid was like Charlie Brown (even with how his spotlight episode was told), Belson was like a Muppet, etc. Really cool details put into each character and how their stories were told!

I think Skyler Page did the character better than Spencer Rothbell (though Spencer was still pretty good).

My thoughts on clarence is that i love it, each episode is just 10 minutes which I personally like because i have a short attention span, then also because there's so much happening in each episode that also helps. Furthermore i don't really like growing up so seeing this kind of takes me back to my childhood aswell. I can also relate to some traits of the characters, like how jeff doesn't want to be touched. A moment that stood out to me the most is probably the way they show each character and how different their lives are. Overall i enjoy watching clarence and i would watch the whole 4 seasons again and again and again and again... and so on...

If i can add something to this. Clarence was the last Cartoon Network show i had a close attachment to before i turned 18, and started to move away from the Network. and i will say. it felt close to home for me. the characters really take you to a time you were younger. if i can be honest. i mostly relate to Jeff the most based on how dress right dress i want stuff to be. thanks for covering this!

Some of the aesthetics at play here really make me interested to hear an episode on Pinky Malinky. The art style of that show was so utterly unique.

Clarence is definitely one of my favorite Cartoon Network shows. It is genuinely one of the most relatable cartoons I have ever seen, and it’s one of the few shows that reminds me of my own childhood. Plus, I have autism and ADHD, so Clarence is literally me.

@@kermitgotthesickkicks4265 Nope was diagnosed when I was like ….. 11 ? All I remember was I started getting tested when I was in like 5th grade and when they gave me the sheet before I went in to do the tests it had a question about how I feel about my dad my sister and I put Rotting corpse with maggots 🤣 it was fun seeing the dudes face when he read it dude was kinda of scared 😂 and after the boring ass puzzles and questions I had to do that shit took FOREVER to get the results back (I was in the middle of writing but my homie invited me to play Valheim so I stopped halfway through) I think I was gonna write more but I can’t remember what and I haven’t slept since yesterday so

There are only three CN shows I can think of where I saw the pilot right when it came out and followed the show through to the end, loving it the whole way: Steven Universe, Infinity Train...and Clarence. One of these things is not like the other, am I right? xD A KZbin comments section is not the place for me to unpack how special this show is or how much it means to me, but...yeah, this show was something special. Its perspective and humor and weirdly dark storytelling sometimes, there's just so much that went into it to make it an entirely, wonderfully unique experience. Also Gilben. Just...just Gilben.

To me this show was very underrated. It was about a boy with autism as he goes out and explores the world while making new friends and learning some lessons along the way. I wish people cared it about it more (especially since I have autism myself) and I wished it could have been more popular. It sucks it was always dumped in favor of Steven Universe (though I like Steven Universe myself but still).

I have no idea how many things passed on air and would love to see someone finaly covering it all. I swear clarence himself was based on me at that age. Blows my mind sometimes with small details.
