Detail is mostly gained from remastering the source recording. Clarity is gained from improvements made to your selection of; speakers, amp & preamp. Cables can also improve clarity. Clarity focuses details, enabling you to hear into the depth (3D) of the recording. It can also instill any holographic quality that might exist🔊🎶😎.

for me on clarity on headphones.. its the removal of any damping material or resonance noises from that would make the sound muffled or a distracting ringing from the materials used in the design. details are a combination of instrument separation (not stage size), timbre and transient response. Can you pick out each instrument and player in the band. Does each instrument sound natural. In complex passages where you have great dynamic swings can the headphones keep up to show off the transients without muddying the passage or being to shrill. I think most commonly people focus on treble to upper treble for "detail" and also assume that louder = more detailed.

I forgot what brand it was but in Hong Kong there was an event to introduce a brand new headphone and they got a band to sing to the audience and record it at the same time, and then they ask the audience to try the headphone and listen back to the recording which was recorded while they were listening to moments back to hear whether the headphone sounds the same as the live show.

This is such a good conversation. Brings me to mind the Sennheiser HD 650/6XX. To me, it's detailed but lacks clarity. The whole of the presentation is like a gray aural picture, emanating from "muddy water". When I wear clearer headphones, majority of details are still there in the same intensity, but the increased clarity allows me to hear an aural picture more in black and white terms, and smaller details are easier to hear. There is more distinction between dark and bright sounds, making the silent background more evident. Music emanates from "clear water". If I listen to any of my beyerdynamic headphones, no matter if its the DT 880/990, T90 or Amiron home, they all have this fake brightness, like an over-sharpened picture. They're not more detailed or clearer than my more balanced or even darker-sounding headphones. They're just piercing and metallic-sounding to my ears.

You can have midrange clarity while treble is slightly rolled off, compromising detail to some extent. I prefer the term transparency. The system as a clean sheet of glass between you and (a picture of) the recording. When your sheet of glass has spotlights attached to it, aimed at some of the details, that's when it gets bright.

Great stuff. Totally agree not surprised at all from the abyss ppl to have a greater separation between every object by itself . Imo greater clarity achieved by the driver’s ability to separate & reproduce the sound given to him without distort the source more then it equally is . A lot (equally the most) of headphones act as a tuning tool as like thy are a self proclaimed band the plays all your music with their tools in their“room” , I believe some “noise” should be played . I believe that a great driver will reproduce the noise as accurate he will do with all others sounds ... with the right positioning and acoustics that one will preform the best in my opinion but it seems that to just adjust the mass and volume of the right frequencies also create a greater separation and focus on the mainly “more” important ones which ends up in a greater clarity and im no expert like AT ALL (!) hahah but ... its still not “clarity” if its not clear how much and if , the source really is clear u know .. anyways keep up the amazing work love this place every time i watch )

So when a song has been remastered. Does that mean that they have gone to the original mix and faked it to sound better.

So, I am no expert, and I would like someone who know to explain this same question to us. But, as far as I know, there's the original "raw" material, and the published "original" work. They have already mastered (or faked in your words) that raw material. Sometimes the original mastering is not good enough, for human o because of the machines used. They can take the original recording of each voice, instrument, and so on, and they can mix it different. For example they could improve the volume of a particular instrument or how it is equalized. There's not such thing as "original" "raw" "unfaked" recording. There's always some kind of sound production. I always felt that, sometimes, being an audiophile means to apreciate not only the artistic work, but also the sound production work (usually made by a sound engineer)

@@gatobakuniano some material is highly dependent upon the times. Go listen to Folk Singer by Muddy Waters. It's a classic blues album known for being one of the best well recorded albums of it's time. I've heard it on reel to reel, vinyl (original pressing and remastered) as well as Flac CD rip and stream. As you move away from the original format (r2r) the sound quality is slightly degraded as you go down the chain (IMO). Some of this is the re-mastering interpretation of sound presentation and some is the media format. But the high res streaming versions are way off what makes the original r2r and vinyl pressings special. Once you hear the differences it just clicks.

Quite often, in my experience, the remaster sounds worse. Sometimes they squash the dynamics or the treble energy reaches cancerous levels. Sometimes they re-record certain elements of the song to make it sound "cleaner". Whatever that means. So if it's not audiophile music, it's usually worse anyway. Pop, rock, whatever. Just listen to the original.

Similar to a camera capturing a picture. Having seen a KZbinr say an off frequency response being off, from measurement, makes the whole headphone bad. It’s like the color spectrum of a picture being off from the tested standard. EQ “can” help that, but if the camera can’t produce a clear picture & the nuances within, as will as set the image in proper dimension of scene taken, then, that can make the headphone more unbearable. & that takes eyes to look at just as our ears listen. Thanks, yet again, fellas. Rock on! Or lounge on. Groove on. Or all “positive” moods. 😊

When you have certain points of degree of clarity.. As you said some tracks that are lacking will sound harsh because of over sharpening? And also some songs will exceed the level of detail of your headphones? Am i wrong in thinking that sir?

Perfect clarity will not exceed the original event. At this level of clarity in speaker drivers the electronics are a limiting factor.
