Chloe wanted to know Clark's secret. Lana wanted to know Clark's secret. And Lex _really_ wanted to know Clark's secret. But Pete was never the slightest bit interested in understanding why his best friend was the way he (apparently) was. He just had some odd idiosyncrasies as far as Pete was concerned, and so what? All he wanted to know was why Clark and his father (again, apparently) stole the spaceship he'd found and laid an erroneous claim to. That's it. And he ended up finding out that Clark was far more duplicitous than he'd ever imagined and taking on a burden he never asked for. The only person Clark opted to tell was the one who was ultimately _way_ happier not knowing.

Writing Pete off the show was one of the biggest mistakes they ever made. He was the only real male friend Clark had (Lex was always out to exploit Clark in one way or another) and when he left Clark was never the same again and became mopey. He needed one buddy and they never gave him one. Oliver Queen was never a substitute and in my opinion should've never been on this show since the show was about Clark's days before Superman. At most he should've had 1-2 appearances max. Seeing the chemistry between Clark & Pete here and Pete & Jimmy in the season 7 episode Hero, it would've been awesome had they brought Pete back in season 5 & beyond and had a college environment from seasons 5-8 where Clark, Pete, Jimmy & Lois would've been friends who dealt with one another. Clark & Lois could've worked for their college newspaper along with Jimmy who would be the photographer for it and Pete could've been taking political science courses and getting built up as Lex's vice president in the future. Chloe should've been killed/written off with the way they ruined her in season 5+ by transforming her from a journalist to a hacker in the most unrealistic way and turned her into a mother figure for Clark who he couldn't think or act without. Pete as a character never invaded Clark's character role like Chloe did and was always the best secret keeper.
@dagameplayer5 жыл бұрын
Well its sad but it's realistic that not everyone in your life sticks around forever. Even in the fictional super hero universe. I liked Pete a lot but I really can't imagine him fitting in in later seasons.
@wtcvidman5 жыл бұрын
@@dagameplayer Well the thing is he is a canon character in the Superman universe and should've been written to be a bigger part of Clark's life. Instead they made a non-canon character like Chloe have a much bigger role than she should've had. A role that had negative effects on canon characters like Clark (who was written like an idiot once Chloe knew his full secret), Pete (who was written off the show) & Lois (who should've been in a reporter role much earlier than she was once they decided to have her on the show). They could've easily had Lionel & those who worked for him go after Pete for much of season 3 like they did in Forsaken instead of having Lionel's crosshairs regarding Clark's friends be mainly Chloe throughout that season. They actually had a great setup to do just that at the end of season 2 when they had Pete run interference for Clark when he stole Lionel's kryptonite key before destroying his ship. Pete's mom was a judge so they could've taken that in very interesting directions. Lionel knew Pete had something to do with the theft of his key and it was very unlike him to just let that go. They didn't give him any role in the events of Exile and Phoenix. Too bad. It would've been smart to have killed off Chloe at the end of season 3 or maybe during the meteor shower in season 4 and keep Pete on and introduce Lois in season 4 than to ruin Chloe's character along with Clark's like they ended up doing.
@dagameplayer5 жыл бұрын
@@wtcvidmanThat's what makes it Smallville though. The show created it's own characters and did things their way which was fine with majority of the audience that watched it. Me included. You say they changed her unrealistically? Just about nothing about Smallville is realistic. There's nothing realistic about Meteroir freaks running around, nothing realistic about Clark Kent in general, etc. Chloe was too popular of a character to just kill off in season 3 or 4.
@wtcvidman5 жыл бұрын
@@dagameplayer Well by unrealistic, I meant her character itself. Yeah it had powers and freaks and stuff, but in Chloe used to be a more realistic character in that she had her talent of journalism and had many flaws and limits like a real person did. She was not a hacker in any way, yet in season 5 she was suddenly given that ability when they changed her from what her initial purpose was. Her flaws and limits made her likable and once she lost them, she became a bullshit Mary Sue character whose buildup came at the expense of Clark. Later on in season 9 they turned her into an expert archer (as seen in Pandora) out of nowhere. I like unrealistic things like powers, but having characters with previous limits be whatever the plot needs them to be is weak in my opinion and it makes me hate such characters. Such characters are spotlight hogs who clearly lost their purpose and need to go and make room for other characters who bring something new. I thought Tess was a far more interesting character than Chloe with the way they used her. And that's where the popularity thing comes into play. The show's premise was about Clark before he becomes Superman and about his friendship with Lex and his growth & development. Chloe was a made up character who was a part of his life, but that's all she was---an expendable supporting character, not a character whose death would end the show. Had they killed her off, Lois would have picked up the slack and they could've kept Pete in to continue to be Clark's secret keeping buddy like he was. And unlike Chloe, Pete never intruded in Clark's hero role and made Clark dumber by having him tell Clark what to do and handhold him like Chloe did starting in season 5. My point regarding Smallville that I've brought up many times is that it began as a show whose plot guided the usage of its characters, which is why it was so good in its first 3 seasons. Starting in the 4th season, it became clear that was no longer the case and that they switched to a plot that was guided by characters instead of the plot bringing in the characters on an as-needed basis like it used to be. That's why they started pairing Clark & Lois together on so many nonsense filler episodes and why the main arc of that season, the stones, got only 5 episodes (Crusade, Transference, Spell, Sacred & Commencement) and some of those like Crusade & Transference barely even focused on the stones. That's also why Lana was shoved into the stones plot with that idiotic witch possession plot, something that should've never happened and ruined the stones plot of that season. The quality really tanked starting the 4th season, mainly because they forced characters into episodes and scenes where they had no business being in and other character roles like Chloe's became bastardized and ended up cannibalizing Clark's role. They even screwed up Martha when they turned her into the Red Queen by having her be the antithesis of what Martha Kent is supposed to be. She was shown having an ends justifying the means mentality with the crap she was doing (like kidnapping Maxwell Lord or whoever it was she kidnapped) all for the "protect Clark" bullshit that Lana, Chloe and every other shit character on the show was shown to do at various points. Good shows don't do these things. That's why Supernatural is still on after 14 seasons & will be getting a 15th one because they made decisions to kill off popular characters (Bobby, Ellen, Jo, Crowley, Rufus, etc) and stay focused on the 2 main characters in the series which kept it fresh. Sure it's not as good as it was before, but it still had way more great seasons than Smallville did. The current season has been a lot better than the previous one that had lots of bad writing & retcons (something Smallville had as well with that horrible Veritas plot). It was clear by the 10th season of Smallville that they were out of ideas and just wanted to end it with some of the episodes they had like Harvest, Fortune, Prophecy, and the lame way they did the season's Darkseid plot that showed the writers did not understand who Darkseid is, his powers, and made it clear they didn't have the budget to do it like the actual Darkseid of the comics (who doesn't possess people). Even the reliance on the Oliver Queen character from seasons 6-10 showed me that they didn't know what to do with Clark and had to force another superhero who had no business on a show about a pre-Superman Clark Kent just to fill the time. I think it would be ok to show him 3-4 times over the course of the series, but to have him on as many times as they did felt off, especially when you consider how badly developed the reporter side of Clark was. Smallville focused so much on Chloe that they failed to convince the audience that Clark deserved his job at the Daily Planet and that he actually cared and wanted to be there. They did a realistic job of showing why Chloe (who didn't even remain there) got there, but regarding Clark & even Lois, no newspaper would've hired them under any realistic situation. And for a show that was on for 10 years to fail doing that is pretty sad in my opinion and shows how messed up its priorities were. Even more so when you consider what Clark had been doing with his life in seasons 5-7 outside of fighting evil (he had no purpose like a man should at those years). Sure plenty of people watched, but that doesn't mean the show was brilliant or couldn't have been better. I stuck with it since I wanted to see how it ended after getting into it by the 2nd season (Insurgence is the episode that hooked me). But I refused to watch any other superhero show on the CW network ever since and have stuck by that. I brought up so much of this & plenty of plot ideas in the Kryptonsite forums back when the show was on because I cared & wanted it to be better and Craig who runs the site said that people involved with the show would peruse the forums every now and then. I think Stephen DeKnight had an account there. Anyway, just my thoughts. Take care. The new episode of Supernatural will be starting soon and I don't want to miss it. ;)

I remember having a weird feeling Pete was leaving the show when this season was aired. We were very unhappy that they got rid of such a rich character that we liked from Pete. The show definitely felt different without him and didn't feel as good. There were some great episodes later on but still.

One thing that always bugged me about this. NO MATTER what Lex did, or how he tried, or how he helped, they still talked about him like he's the most untrustworthy man on the planet. Just like "trust" is earned, the opposite "mistrust" is also equally earned. I could easily understand if Pete said to Clark, "Don't tell nobody, ever unless you really get to know them really really well." But he directly goes and tells Clark that Lex (specifically) cannot ever be trusted. Like, was he exuding waves of darkness or something? Why'd everyone seem to already know that Lex was evil?

Clark did the right thing by telling him instead of Lex. I don’t think ever Clark told Lex his secret not because he couldn’t trust him but believe Lex got obessed with meteor rocks. Clark found out he was spying on him. Lex deals with the shadiest characters. I mean for god sake he broke into his own fiancé’s office to steal Clark’s blood, that’s really foul.

Same thing happened to me. Made a life long friend in the 3rd grade, brother from another mother type friend. Long lost brother type friend. We were so close and thought there was nothing that could ever happened that could separate us... Until Jr. year in HS. Right before Senior year started, he told me that him and his parents got offered a well paying job that could better all of their lives in a type of "happy ever after" type way but at the cost of moving to Italy. They obviously accepted but the only thing he couldn't accept was moving so far away from me. It broke my heart to hear and face the reality that I just refused to believe. It wasn't until the day he was done packing and ready to go to the airport to leave forever. We had a really long goodbye talk until they had to go and I managed to get my parents to take me to the airport so I could at least spend 1 last hour with him until he boarded the plane. It happened and as soon as he entered the plane and the door closed, it hit me. Hard. I saw him in the plane as it flew away and practically died inside knowing I basically just lost the best friend I've had ever had cuz we didn't really have a solid way of communication at the time so it was an "all hope is lost" situation. When this shit happened on my favorite TV show, it made me cry not only because Clark just lost his BFF but also cuz it reminded me of the time I lost My BFF. Smallville was such a great show.

I love the stupidity of this scene where Clark acts like its Goodbye forever when Pete says he's moving to another City. Clark can literally run Circles around the U.S in a matter of Seconds 😂. At least with Lana, once she absorbed the Kryptonite, her presence was killing him - so that was practically goodbye forever.

But it sucks tho, that Lana and Kal were a wonderful power couple (literally) that it just felt weird watching Lois and Clark on screen from thence. It’s like the writers KNOW that Lois and Clark MUST end up together to keep with comic book accuracy, and they wrote KaLana so well, that they literally made it so that thy couldn’t be together so that Lois could get her some Man of Steel. So sad. 😞
