Green 90 would be the obvious choice to go for but honestly I don't believe in such a thing as a genre specific speaker. It's a little bit more nuanced than that and it may all come down to the high end bite of a specific speaker. Rumours say that the V30 design was trying to be a ceramic speaker that sounded like the Alnico Blue. So although people see V30 as modern it's actually a vintage voiced speaker as the name implies. 🙂

Why is having a frequency dip labeled a problem? If it sounds good, it is good.
@mlsoundlab7 ай бұрын
It's not the dip itself but something is causing that dip which is not a part of the speaker - most likely a phase issue of some sort. So it's similar to saying you're not having any "problem" when your sub and speakers are out of phase with each other. But when you get them in phase it makes a world of difference. I talked with Nolly about this quite some time ago and his theory was that it's a problem caused by the back of the cabinet reflecting sound waves back inside the cab to the front. IIRC for this reason he prefers miking up slanted top speakers to minimize this effect. It's definitely a real thing. ❤
@louisburley15977 ай бұрын
Once you get into mixing it might make more sense.

@@louisburley1597 The out of phase bass example was sufficient. Still, I never heard of anyone speak of this as a problem. Ever. With millions of recordings of real cabs done, that did not prevent anyone from sounding great... Still, if it can be done better, then sure, let's see.

Just because there’s a dip doesn’t mean it’s a problem. Guitars sound different from a saxophone or kazoo because unique harmonic pattern. Good vs bad is about how you use it musically and mostly a matter of taste. Totally flat response is not going to be universally better and will often sound much worse just like perfectly tuned vocals and quantized drums often sound lifeless and dull. Embrace the idiosyncrasies of our gear and work to find complimentary combinations not only with your gear but the full band and I think you’ll be happier with the end result and the process.
@masterofreality2307 ай бұрын
Yea, makes me wonder why there was no comparison to other IRs.
@Hzuuuu7 ай бұрын
You're missing the point. It doesn't mean much to a guitar player because it's made to be mix ready. It will sound boring to you when playing or jamming with them. These IRs are essentially a pre-mixed IR that you can drop into a full band mix without having to deal with all the hassles of doing tons of post EQs and corrections just for it to stay in the mix. As a player, you will not like this. Your mixing engineers and producers however will appreciate this. But we've been doing this manually by hand for decades so I don't see the need to spend $20 for each of these either.
@louderthangod7 ай бұрын
@@Hzuuuu One of the key features was more low end in these IR’s, that sounds like the opposite of “pre-mixed”. The sounds I dial in when jamming at home have more low end but for tracking I take out a lot of the deep bass which will just make mixing the bass harder with the overlap. Pre-mixed would be cleaned up at the low end and more detail midrange to help the guitar sit better in a full band mix. Also, it’s the idiosyncrasies of the guitar, amp, cab and mic that we love so much. Making everything flat response would remove that. A perfectly flat is not what it’s cracked up to be. Run some of your favorite sounding songs of all time through a spectrum analyzer, they won’t be flat. Getting a great balance doesn’t mean flat. Our ears don’t even hear frequencies equally at different frequencies. We are very sensitive to 3k so if you dialed that in to be flat with say 40hz the 3k will appear louder to us.

I'm not sold... Here's why. This is an IR only option that is supposedly of an actual speaker in a cabinet, from what is said. So why are the cabinets not available for sale? This sounds like an answer looking for a problem. I feel that a larger averaging algorithm could even out, and widen the response, with results just like this. Let me explain. When I am doing system measurements with an FFT system, often times, there can be so much variation in the frequency response that you can't humanly extrapolate the good, from the bad data. One way to minimize the " noise ", is to use a larger averaging setting, and reduce the number of bands that it measures from. This will create a smoother, more human digestible reading, which can be more easily understood and make a decision about. In this case, you have a frequency response that shows the " speaker impulse " more closely resembling the averaging slope used for Pink Noise. I.E. it falls pretty smoothly, and evenly from about 50hz up to 12khz. I find it hard to believe that the cabinet suddenly removes -6db from just the mid band, adds more bass in the low band, and doesn't touch the highs... Also keep in mind that since each speaker is different, the tuning of the cabinet must therefore also be different for each speaker, to achieve the same results. So, in this case, there is a 1 of 1 speaker cabinet that is only good for ML Sound Labs to utilize for its special impulse responses. I don't see the need to spend thousands of dollars for a special cabinet that is only good for 1 speaker. I am quite certain that a different algorithm can be done that achieves the same thing. Does this IR do a thing? Sure, it does. Was it actually created the way it is said it was? Maybe, but why would it need to be. I just don't see the problem I guess? We have been mic'ing cabs since the 50's at least, and I find it hard to believe that it took 70 years for the problem to only just come to this solution. There isn't a problem, only a solution that needs a problem to exist.

Didn't get why the mid range peaks and dips are called a "problem". It's not a problem, it's a character, that represents character of different cabs. Same as you have different frequency response from different guitars and amps. With the same success the most non-problematic tone will be an eq with hi- and low- pass, or a pure hifi speaker. But it would sound nothing like a good guitar tone. IMO this pack is solving a non-existing issue.

Inherently, 4x12 cabinets are imperfect by design. Some people (including us) love them despite their imperfections, but we're challenging this with the Reflex cab design. Producers will often reach for a notch-style EQ to push these EQ curves into a flatter response, but our mantra has always been to get the guitar tones right at the source. This is a real cabinet that sounds balanced and smooth with no post-processing. -Kai
